An Unimpressive Brag
A quick brag from an incredibly amateur mechanic. I bought my truck back in February with a broken sway bar link. My 4Runner is the first car I've ever purchased or owned and I really don't know what I'm doing. However, I committed to changing the link myself. Good lord was it a pain in the ass! 21 years of rust and grime really did a number on the bolt. No chance my cyclist upper body was getting it undone
Took a buddy's hacksaw to it and managed to get her off. A lot of curse words later, and the new one is on! Certainly a very bottom tier repair, but one I'm still proud of. So take it from me rookies, you can at least do this job yourself!

Every master mechanic started somewhere. Growing up, I remember getting those white cotton "garden" gloves if I had to try and get the chain back on my bicycle. Dad bought an old truck for us to restore together, I doubt I more than sat in the drivers seat of the thing for 4 years.
It took being on my own and not having the money to pay someone else to do things like changing brake pads/rotors to get me into wrenching. Led to a career of turning wrenches (found I really enjoy doing it... just not when I had to have the questionable ethics/morals required of dealer/line mechanics).
Point is, don't worry about what it was you did. No one who has more experience is going to knock you for starting out. I would suggest you continue though, time to think about replacing all of the vehicles fluids...
Oh, and a word of warning. Cheap (quality, not price) tools cause a TON of heartache in rounded off fasteners. Spend some money on quality, and you absolutely do *NOT* need some huge set of tools. I've been earning money with little more than the most basic set of hand tools for decades (plus the odd specialty tool that was bought along the way). Can't help on brand as I bought Snap-On back in the day....

rear O2 sensor as step 64 in troubleshooting a nagging occasional P0420 CEL code. we'll see how this goes. one nut came off easily, and the other took some PB Blaster and then let loose. they are both so destroyed from rust, i swapped in some extras i had laying around.

Currently mine is at the shop, I was initially getting my new ProComp wheels + BFG K02 tires installed and an alignment...which turned into needing a new ball joint...which turned into a steering rack leak...which turned into needing a new knuckle on that same ball joint. lol. So they'll have my T4R for the weekend. oof. oh well, better now than on the trail, right?!

Got my leaking steering rack off the runner. I was hung up on the pressure lines but after some penetrating oil and a day to soak i got the high pressure line off. The low pressure line is all rounded so i just cut it and ordered the replacement nipple. Hopefully it will be back and running this weekend!

Hey 3rd Gener's! New to the site. Wanted to share what I have done to my 99 SR5. I got her 4 years ago from someone who neglected her. She sat in a driver for 5 years with bird droppings, being egg'd and just weather beaten. When I drove home from LA, she was a little shaky and spit and sputtered. It only had 131,000 on the odom. I got home and went to work. To date, I have replaced Timing belt, water pump, MFS, throttle body, all new denso plugs, wiring, belts, plastic restore, new sound system, catalytic converter (mine was stolen) and full blown tune up. up next is the suspension, rack and pinon. She has 162,000 and is running strong. last will be the new super black paint job. Once she is completed, i'll post the finishing results. I recently put on Tacoma wheels and new tires. She is looking good under the Socal Sun.
