Did my filler panels and plasti dipped hood and grill. I have a custom grill coming so I just wanted to temporarily black it out until it arrives. As for the hood, I am mounting a lightbar above the windshield and didn't want the glare to be blinding... waiting on lightbar mounts now

About a month ago I noticed that my coolant level was low (none in the overflow and too low in the rad to see/touch).

It hasn’t been a problem because the weather is sufficiently cold that my operating temperatures are all within spec according to live data from my OBDII reader / app.

I don’t see any leaks either; the low level is almost certainly because the system wasn’t burped / topped off after my radiator was replaced about 3 months ago (shop did it for me for free since they accidentally damaged my previous 2-year-old radiator).

Anyway, I’m waiting on a couple parts, including the heater valve, some heater hoses, thermostat, etc, and intend on doing a full coolant flush with distilled water and genuine Toyota Red at that time.

But in the mean time, I just wanted to top off with some Zerex Asian Vehicle Red 50/50.

Instead of dropping the skids and opening up the little petcock to see what coolant was used, I had just assumed there was Red or Pink coolant in there.

Well, as I was burping the system, the pink mix in my Lisle 24680 Spill-Free Funnel started turning yellow…

That doesn’t look very red to me! D’oh!!

Anyway, I’ll do a full distilled water flush and replace with genuine Toyota Red soon, while I’m replacing the heater valve, hoses, thermostat, etc. I don’t drive that much, it’s cold outside, and I don’t think anything will explode in the mean time.

Moral of this story: trust, but verify.

PS: if I’m wrong, and you think something WILL explode if I drive with Mystery Green and about 1.5-1.75 quarts of Zerex Asian Vehicle Red 50/50 mixed together, please let me know! I’m all ears

Passed CA smog test.

I bought the 4Runner in OR and used my sister's Portland address to register it. Before I transferred the title to CA the cat was stolen in Sacramento. Because it had OR plates I was able to replace it here in CA without spending a fortune. But now I have to carry around reams of paperwork to prove that it's still legal in CA.

At least it's only every other year, the gas is cheap and the roads are meticulously maintained here.

From what I've read, the chemistry in red and green are different and are not interchangeable, and cannot/should not be mixed.

I plan to do the same thing as you (distilled water flush then go red) but what's wrong with Zerex 50/50?

I’ve read the same thing: green and red don’t mix. So I’m definitely planning on flushing and going red. I just didn’t know if it was an emergency, like the chemical compounds in the green and red would do something destructive quickly. Should I not drive until I flush it? Should I flush immediately because it shouldn’t even sit in the garage with the mixed coolants?

I spoke with my local mechanic, and he said not to worry, my engine won’t explode. Just do the flush and go red at some point in the near future, but no big rush.

I don’t think anything’s wrong with Zerex 50/50. Seems totally fine, fully compatible with our trucks, and comparable to Toyota Pink. I just already have two gallons of Toyota Red in my garage.

My half full jug of Zerex will probably end up in the back of the truck in my box of extra fluids for long trips.

Good choice on the Lisle 24680 funnel. Makes it so much easier to burp the system!

As far as green and red coolant. While they are technically different coolants (OAT vs HOAT) they will not cause any sort of chemical reaction and damage anything. Freeze point protection will be the same as well. Plenty of cars on the road with a hodgepodge of different coolants (probably some with washer fluid in there as well to be honest lol) that are running just fine.

I’d recommend flushing the cooling system twice with distilled water if you have the patience for it. I’m sure you know this, but for anyone that doesn’t make sure you turn the front and rear heaters on in order for coolant to flow and flush those parts of the system.

I didn’t have the patience to wait for the thermostat to open so I took it out once I drained it for the first flush and reinstalled it with a new thermostat gasket before my final fill with coolant. There was a decent amount of water still in the block after draining the coolant via the radiator drain.

Doing research too- GMRS licenses $70 (still, is supposedly going to be $35 some day) for 10 years and no test, which is attractive. Trying to decide between GMRS and ham. GMRS will do it in 99.99% of the time, 100% if we're lucky enough. I'm thinking about out there emergencies. Need to do more research on the different communications available for that because ham seems like a lot more bite than I need to chew.

Bank 2 (50—99) - Rx for FRS/GMRS (30), MURS (5), CB (8) and NOAA Weather (7 channels)

Bank 1 is dedicated to ham simplex channels...

Most banks will be filled-in with ham repeaters for areas we frequent.
