What Did You Do To Your 3rd Gen Today?

Thanks - I needed to hear that from someone who knows what they're talking about. I'm not a mechanic - just a part-swapper and the industry must love my type......sigh. I have been on a roller-coaster with long periods of stable cool temps mixed with 215s in the middle of a foggy night for no apparent reason. Sometimes the tranny also rises in solidarity, other times it doesn't give a hoot. The Koyorad is for a manual so that makes no sense. I typed a similar reply 15 mins ago but I don't see it in this thread, so if this is redundant - sorry about that!
Only other thing along those lines would be that the thermostat jiggle valve needs to be at the bottom, which is upside down from basically every other engine. If installed 'normally' the coolant temps end up much less stable - but based on your description that the temps are normal most of the time I think you did that right. I'd stick with OEM on the thermostat and radiator cap, since the aftermarket can't seem to get those right... I've had leaking radiator caps cause overheating issues on a few different Toyotas - often at odd times.

Yep always at 6 O'Clock. When I got this 4Runner nearly 5 years ago the cap it came with started to disintegrate internally causing pressure loss. I replaced it with the OEM 88 kPa and was fine. When I replaced the radiator it came with with a $120 Denso I also replaced the cap and it was fine for a year or two. Started getting some fluctuations and tried the 108 kPa for the heck of it and saw no difference at all. The Koyorad uses its own 127 kPa cap. Most of the time things are swell so I will just keep an eye on it.

A couple of weeks ago, we got 8 inches of sleet/ice/snow, and I needed to engage the rear locker (and front locker too) to back out of the driveway to the street. The locker engaged normally, when I got to the street, it wouldn't disengage. No change at all from turning the switch off. Turned it on and off a few times,. nothing. So I just drove it to work (it's not all that far) with the locker engaged.

A few days later the temps got a little nicer (around 20 degrees) so I tried some troubleshooting. Both fuses involved (4WD and GAUGE) were good. Pulled the kick panel and did some basic multimeter tests there, all seemed pretty OK for the locked status. Pulled the carpet under the seat and tested there, same results. So I jumpered 12V+/GND to the M1/M2 wire pairs and could hear the actuator locking and unlocking. Left it unlocked, plugged everything back up, same results as before - it would lock (sort of weakly?) and wouldn't try to unlock. It still being cold and miserable, I didn't want to lay under the car in the snow much, but I did briefly hop under and make sure the plugs were still in place on the actuator and lock switch. And jumped(!!!) to my first conclusion - that the ECU was bad. I didn't think it was the wiring because it would lock and unlock when jumpered directly, and I replaced the harnes from the body to the axle only 2 years ago. I didn't think it was the actuator because it would lock and unlock when jumpered (I jacked up a wheel and it was actually locking and unlocking). A somewhat weak lock, and no attempt to unlock when everything else is OK? Must be the ECU!

So I ordered one, left it manually unlocked, waited 5 or 6 days for the ECU to show up. Plugged it in and...... no change at all. Exact same results. A weak lock attempt when it was unlocked, no attempt at all to unlock. I guess it's not the ECU. (I looked my ECU over carefully for bad solder joints, common on old electronics, no issues). At that point all the snow was in the process of melting, miserable to crawl under the car (it doesn't fit in our garage - too tall) so, despite jumping tot he wrong conclusion once, I jumped to another, bad actuator. And ordered off a new actuator, because I'd like the locker to be reliable. We do some fun stuff out in Colorado and Utah every year where that locker really needs to work.

So waited another 4 or 5 days for that to show up. By this time the snow was mostly gone. So I crawled under the truck, unbolted the locker wiring harness brace on the actuator, unplugged the 2 connectors (which is a blind and awkward PITA) and pulled the 22 month old harness down. I was going to plug the new actuator in it and cycle it a few times before taking the old one off and replacing it. And finally, belatedly, after way too much blind/dumb parts cannon firing, I found the actual issue. Some broken and damaged wires.

I replaced it a couple of years ago because the wires broke somewhere in the middle where they flex every time the axle moves. And they only did that after 20+ years of flexing around. But this time, I'm not entirely sure what happened. The wires don't really move near the actuator plug, the harness has a brace bolted to the actuator further back - no movement between that and the plug. Not mouse chews, the wires look like they were pinched. Most have some damage to the insulation, and one was completely severed and missing about 1/4". I (belatedly, again) presume that is the unlocked limit switch inside the actuator. With the wire broken, the ECU assumes the actuator is already unlocked, so it won't try to run the motor for the 4 seconds like normal. The lock limit switch wire is intact, so with it unlocked, the motor will try to lock it. I think the weak locking from the dash switch was perhaps because of damaged but not completely severed M1/M2 wiring, resistance dropping voltage enough that it was weak through the factory wiring, but strong enough when jumpered directly from a spare car battery at the rear seat.

So yeah, 2 bad hasty parts bought before getting to the real problem.

There's nothing around that area on the truck that I could see that would hit it. The parking brake cable is above there, but it moves with the axle. About the only thing I can imagine is that a rock got flipped up on the axle at some point, bounced off the wires and fell off again?

GhostRing, your killing me LOL I laughed so hard when you posted that!

Today I attempted to work on the 4runner. Didn't work. Guess I need more rest to get fully recovered from this pneumonia.

JohnMc well damn, I'd pick up some pins and wire from any of your favorite connector company and repair the pins. 1 of 2 things happened, some road debris hit and cut it, or someone got under there and cut it, or maybe a rodent.

I've had good luck with corsa technic for pins, wire (high end wire) and connectors. It is a sumitomo connector, 6 pin TS090 sealed series, toyota pn 90980-11194, sumitomo pn 6189-0323.

The pins

The seals

ETA - forgot the connector.

The connector

Got the ARB front bumper installed recently after being gifted it by my awesome girlfriend.

The install was straightforward using Timmy's video but I had two crusty driver side tow hook bolts that fought me tooth and nail.
One of them eventually snapped but after an hour on the second one I managed to get it out.

Just need to get my turn signal lights wired up now - If anyone has a recommendation for a good waterproof wiring harness let me know!

Thanks for those links! I already fired off the parts cannon a 3rd time and bought another harness because the little stubs on mine looked too short to reliably butt splice. I think I'll order some stuff from your links and patch up my busted cable for a future spare, though.

Dusted off the credit card and started buying parts. In the past few months I've somehow picked up four 4Runners. They are running/driving projects for a friend and I. We will be looking to refurbish them and sell them. Average price paid was $2500. Needless to say, they need work. Rust, frame, suspension, TB/WP, etc, etc.

My friend and I are aren't afraid of nuts/bolts, suspension, light engine work, cutting/welding and rust. But bodywork is not in our wheelhouse. Rockers yes, but more than that, not so much.

In the end, probably only two will be back on the market. My son appropriated one and I will keep one.

I just pulled the trigger on JBA UCA's and an OME/Bilstein kit (5100's with 880 front and 906 rear).

I know a few Toyota dealers support the site. I will be going to them for OEM parts.

Mercer, WI? Home of Claire d'Loon? Welcome!

If you need bumpers, sliders, etc. take a couple minutes to visit 4x Innovations. They are in Platteville, WI (a long drive for you, granted) and they do permit pick-up of products in lieu of shipping, so you can save some money. Plus, meeting Adam and getting a tour of his production facility is well worth the time. Also, Platteville has some great local spots for a burger and beer for lunch. Makes for a nice day trip.

Mercer, Pennsylvania not Wisconsin.

But I spent 9 months in WI on a job and just got back home. Brought back a '99 from Wausau.

Today I worked on diagnosing the 'crank but no start' issue on my girlfriend's 3rd gen 3.4. It's been a 2-year project altogether so I'd love to get it started soon. After getting the engine professionally rebuilt and dropping it in, connecting everything and filling with fluids it will crank but not start. It also makes a pop/bang noise periodically while trying to start, which actually shakes the motor a bit.

What I've done so far:
--swapped starter from other truck with the same engine (definitely one that works), no change
--made sure crank sensor was receiving 100-300 rpm thru OBDII while trying to start
--tested all fuses with a volt meter to make sure the circuits are receiving power
--made sure battery is good and fully charged at 12.56V
--drained old gas (sat for over a year) and put in 5 gals new gas
--changed fuel filter after draining old gas
--tested all 6 spark plugs one at a time by holding them against metal, they all had spark. 5 out of 6 spark plugs were wet with fuel

The fuel pump whirs to life when key is put in and I was able to jump it to drain the old fuel, so it does work. I'm not sure the pressure or how far fuel is getting in the system though. The banging from engine is very strange too. Any tips would be great!

Not sure what exactly you mean by a "pop/bang noise/banging from engine"...BUT it sounds like a backfire out of the intake, if so the most common cause for that is the engine is out of timing, which would be from the rebuilding process and not getting all the timing marks lined up correctly.

DownstreamYota check to make sure your spark plug wires are going to the correct cylinders, easiest to check, if they are correct then check for out of time Auseeker mentioned.

That makes sense, it sounds possible that a really sharp burst of air is causing the noise. I double checked the spark plug wiring is correct too.
It seems unlikely the engine shop would put it back together misaligned but I guess it's always possible. I'm wondering if there's a way I could have put it out of timing slightly myself when I was putting components on. The only relevant part I put on myself was crankshaft pulley (with a new bolt), torquing to 213 ft lb while using the tool to hold it, etc. We also turned the engine over manually (clockwise) a bunch to align the torque converter to bolt it all together

I'd be checking engine time like AuSeeker said.

Sometimes stuff happens, I've had them phase cams wrong, put exhaust cam on intake side. So hopefully it's just out of time on a component. Worst case you have to pull the valve covers and see if they messed up the timing of the intak/exhaust cams. Could also be that they put the timing belt on wrong, like slack on the non-slavk side, pulled the ping and now everything is off once engine is rotated.

If the cams are out then that will need to be fixed. And if your in there I'd check valve clerances too, just to be safe.

Turning an engine backwards can cause the timing belt to skip.

I just turned the crank pulley to line up its mark with the zero. The cam marks are both at 6 o'clock, so 180 degrees from where I think they should be. Meanwhile the marks on the belt itself are not lined up to any other marks. Does this tell me something is off or do I need to pull the crank pulley to actually look at the timing gear? Thanks again
