What Did You Do To Your 3rd Gen Today?

[MENTION=373697]The thing that got me going down this rout was when I was driving home from work. It was 58 outside. 45 mph and uphill. Engine rpm's were around 1800 rpm's. Temp hit 198 then 200 degrees. When I got home the lower radiator hose was ice cold. I let it idle for 5 more mins, still ice cold. It had pressure, and heaters worked.

Could this be a over cooling or to efficent radiator. Possibly. IE it cools the coolant way to fast, not letting the t-stat function as it should. Slowly open and slowly close. But honestly I don't know if that's what I have as 2/3 of my radiator is blocked by my plate bumper/winch.

Swapped in a 170 degree t-stat. Temps stay below 182 degrees and lower hose is warm after driving home in similar temps.

Sounds like not enough flow in the radiator if the engine is hot and the lower hose is cold. So, either bad thermostat or installed upside down (5vz needs jiggle valve down, opposite of basically every other engine).

That said, 200*F is still perfectly safe - it isn't like you are damaging things at those temps.

That said, 200*F is still perfectly safe - it isn't like you are damaging things at those temps.

In my case, I'll hit 220+ in the sand, and the transmission (even in 4-Lo) will follow along closely sometimes, other times staying at 175. I am doing the water pump and a T-Belt kit before my annual Mojave trip in February. I have suspected the transmission has its own problem for a few years, but it performs perfectly well and the magnets were fairly free of shavings. I acquired a new pan recently and will have another look soon. I might have over-torqued a few bolts, causing some deformation and the original one now weeps a bit. That, or I'm not the best FIPG user out there. I may (shudder!) use a gasket next time.

I do currently have the jiggle valve at the bottom. 200 is still in the safe range of temps, but it has never hit that ever since owning the 4runner, and even after the front bumper/winch combo installed. Only difference was I swapped from koyo aluminum rad to a csf aluminum rad.

If I do end up changing the w/p, I might actually go back to the koyo rad. As you said Charlie, there might not be enough "flow" to push the coolant through the radiator, to much water mass. Just as my research (when I was trying the e-fan swap) found you need a high flow water pump if you run a large triple pass or cross flow radiator. I don't want to even attempt that at all lol.

Replaced the cooler t-stat with the new oem t-stat. Works like it should, hottest I saw was 191. Perfect.

Completed the front end today. (control arm bushings, ball joints, struts, tie rods, rack bushings etc.)

Started out at 20.5" center hub to fender all the way around. Ended up at 22" front and 22.5" rear with the original talls in the front up one notch on Bilsteins and OME 906's on the rears.

Rides like a dream.

I'll get some off road tires after Christmas. For now I'm happy, happy, happy.

I don't really need the rack (yet), but the way things are becoming discontinued, I decided to add it to my parts shelf.

I primarily use toyotapartsdeal when I order parts. I always shop around and rarely find a better deal. Every part I've ordered from them has been genuine Toyota but they definitely aren't a Toyota entity or dealer, so I agree with above that they are probably just reselling. Definitely legit though.

Yes after posting my question to you I went and read some info on their website and it states they sell genuine Toyota parts that are shipped from various Toyota dealers...so that says they are "drop shippers".
