What did you do with your 4runner today?

Getting the party started......

LTDSC wheels look great, but they are no comparison to that new mailbox addition to the front bumper! It's like a hood ornament or a light bar cover.

Tensioner/Belt

I have had a "squeaking" for a while and decided to replace the pulley on the tensioner. Some of the noise is gone, but I think there are more pulleys to replace. But it appears however, I got to the belt just in time.

Got muddy again. I'm continually surprised how well these Michelin LTX MS2's do in mud. I thought without an aggressive tread they couldn't handle mud. Wrong, they pull fine.

AAA came out to check the 4Runner. Definitely not the battery. Thinks it is likely the starter, but could also be the alternator at the same time because it died on me while i was driving. Gonna have to tow it.

You say you checked the starter, how did you do so?

Isn't the starter on a 2003 V8 under the intake like it is on all the other V8s, if it is I'm just wondering how you were able to access the starter without removing the intake?

Sorry I should have clarified. I "checked" to the best of my ability. Didn't drop it or anything. I just crawled under with a light and my gopro and took as many pictures as I could around the starter to see if anything had come loose or something. No dice.

like a starter solenoid

Ya I think so too.

Unfortunately on the 4th Gen T4R V8s, no there way to visually check the starter,
especially from underneath the truck because the starter is "hidden" under the intake manifold,
the only way you can even see the starter is by removing the intake manifold which is a very involved job,
so if you're not doing the work yourself and have a mechanic do the job of fixing the starter be prepared to be shocked at the cost!!

How many miles do you think that belt was on for?

Ordered and picked up some brake parts:
New (not remanufactured) aftermarket front calipers
Steel brake lines to replace the current ones between the caliper and hose
High carbon content front rotors
Front pads aren't arriving at the parts store until tomorrow morning

Yea I talked to the guy from AAA and described everything. He thinks because of the strange way it is acting, it could be starter and alternator. The chances of them both going at the same time is really really slim, but it could happen. Either way, it is going to cost me a lot I think. Now I need to determine if it is worth putting this much time, effort, and maintenance money in to a rusted out 14 year old 4Runner :pout:

Take it to Autozone or similar auto parts store and they will check the alternator for free to rule it out, they may even be able to check the starter as well.

At least then you will know what you're really looking at, I find it hard to beleive that the AAA guy if he could test the battery didn't have the proper tester to test the alternator!!

Well that's the issue you see. Can't get the damn thing to start to drive it hahaha.

Well if the battery is at full charge I would suspect it's the starter,
if the battery is not up, try charging the battery and see if it will start,
if it does I would test the alternator and then replace it first before even thinking about doing the starter.

Battery is fully topped.

Tried charging and jumping. Nothing. No start.

So probably the starter...

The weather was beautiful this morning, and I had an opportunity to put the FJ coils in the rear. No more saggy pants bro! :usa2:

Today I'm fixing stuff

I've been having lots of problems with my 4 runner lately. Its a great car and I'm not complaining because it does have 260,000 miles on it. A few weeks ago I had to replace battery & front right caliper. Then, a few days later it started throwing a cylinder 6 misfire code. I've been in the garage all day taking apart the air intake manifold & diagnosing the spark plugs, fuel injectors, and coil packs. So far I've only found some carbon fouling on the #6 plug. I'm guessing the problem is either a vacuum leak, fuel pump problem, or a bad intake manifold gasket..... I'm just glad I'm mechanically inclined. Id hate to take it to a guy who's just gona throw parts at it, lazy, worthless....I mean a professional mechanic.

Did you swap the #6 plug and wire with another plug and wire not throwing any error codes?
