What did you do with your 4runner today?

For the last several weeks I was noticing what seemed like a progressively worsening vibration/shaking in the steering. My commute is not that far and it seemed to smooth out once about 55mph or at least it was better then under 55 or accelerating. I was convincing myself it was my 150k truck showing some wear, maybe steering rack bushing, maybe tie rods, maybe something else.


Moral of the story, its probably just a tire out of balance.

rotated in the spare (which I normally do every 5k) and its smooth as glass again.

Buddy of mine just bought a suuuper clean 1st gen Taco and I'm so jealous.



He then found a set of King coilovers for a ridiculously good price just to rub it in -__-

Some people just have ALL the good fortune, while the rest of us look on lol.

This was one of the first things I had done to my 4R when I bought it in 2014, based on my experience with getting the fronts done on my old Xterra. One of the easiest, least expensive, most effective (especially if you’re in a warm climate), and underrated mods you can do.

Not the most exciting because I am stuck at work all weekend.

Swapped the guts/LCD display of a working (but rough looking) Multi Information Display Unit (AC Control thing) into my non working (but fairly pristine) Unit.

Easy swap and everything works. Able to do it in the Air conditioning which is a plus

Pulled my factory roof rack off to install my new one and all four mount brackets dropped inside the headliner before I even knew what was happening.

Every video I watched in preparation said NOTHING of this even being a possibility.

And it’s real hot out.

He got them fished back out but had fun doing so, here's a link to his topic on his issue and how he got it back together, do yourself a favor and get a piece of all-thread/threaded rod like he did so when you take it apart you have something to hold on too the brackets/mounts and they can't fall into the roof.

Got it very dirty at the 2nd annual Kentucky Toyota Trail Ride. We had a blast.

my pcv valve got a cleaning today, was swapping one of the coils in my effort to troubleshoot a persistent p0174 code, and my research somewhat brought me to pcv valves, i decided to remove mine and inspect. appeared ok at first, had a slight rattle, and i felt it was ok, decidedto blow through the wrong end, and air passed me, got me confused, since i thought the pcv valve is a 1 way valve, i decided to clean it further with carb cleaner, and blew through it occasionally. the more i cleaned, the more the rattling noise increased when i shook it, and the more it resisted my blowing through it. i cleaned it till i couldnt blow through it again.

so i can dedue that blowing through it - the wrong way is the best way to test if the pcv valve is working or not, the rattle test alone isnt fool proof!

Mine gave me a scare this weekend. Had a rough cold start on Friday, then another one Saturday morning. Saturday my CEL and VCS/TRAC lights came on. $h!t. Pulled the code and it was P0304 (misfire on cylinder 4).

Pulled the #4 plug a few hours later and it looked a little lean if anything (and also felt like it wasn't as tight as it should've been), so I swapped it and the coil pack with the ones from cylinder #2. Started up fine this morning, so we'll see. Crossing my fingers it's just a bad injector and that a headgasket isn't in my future

I had to replace the PCV on my 3000GT once and ran into something similar. The old one was bad so I went to Advance Auto and got a new one. Open the box, blow through one way, air goes through.

Blow through the other way - air goes through.

Put back in box, returned to store, ordered OEM valve.

I had this happen to me when I installed my Baja Rack. I ended up pulling the headliner and fixing everything right. Whichever engineer at Toyota designed the roof rack mounting system needs a swift kick in the nuts.

There are little clips that are supposed to keep the mounting brackets in place. Two of mine were completely gone so the brackets fell into the roof, and one more was about to fall off. When I installed the new mounting brackets, I put a dab of silicone on the clips so they wouldn't slide off over time.

Thanks for the link and I for one will never laugh at that kind of misfortune and the amount of work it takes to get things back right!!

In all seriousness, that is my major fear right now is that I am going to end up with a leak.

All the plastic tubes on mine were there but looked did not protrude all the way up like they were supposed to.

Which, after seeing your pictures, leads me to believe that maybe the clip was still attached to the center of the bracket. Preventing me from pulling it all the way up right.

My dash was replaced by Toyota under the extended warranty, but I would called my interior panels/dash, etc. black, even though the Toyota dash replacement is a but lighter in color than everything else I would still call it black.

I know that some on here have installed the Coverlay dash and maybe they will see your post and reply with which color they bought.

How did you manage to get covered under the extended warrenty?

About midnight last night, so still counts as today right? Coastal Off-road High Clearance bumper kit. I love how it turned out. Also coated with Upol Raptor Liner (aerosol cans) and I can’t believe the texture I got out of a rattle can.

How did you manage to get covered under the extended warrenty?

Per the requirements under the extended warranty, I took my T4R to a Toyota dealer during the time frame of the extended warranty, they got my VIN number, inspected my cracked dash and they determined that my T4R indeed was covered and the dash met the requirement for replacement, they then placed the order for my new dash and then when it came in they contacted me to make a appointment to install it, I took it in and they had it replaced in around 2 hours, it was 3 months in between the inspection and them installing the dash which was very good, many had to wait up to 18 months after their inspection because in the beginning Toyota was very back logged since they had to setup and make all the new dashes, I got in on the warranty in the last 6 months of it.

Unfortunately for those that didn't get their's replaced within the time frame, the deadline has long since expired to get Toyota to replace their dashes under the warranty, I feel for those who wasn't aware of the warranty and missed out on getting their's replaced, for those that did know and procrastinated on taking their T4Rs in for the inspection before the deadline so they would get on the list for replacement I can't feel bad for them, because as they say "you snooze you lose".
