What did you do with your classic T4R today?

Well I've had my 2nd gen for a couple years now but this weekend I drove her up in the hills and camped out with some friends. Lots of steak, fly fishing, and hammock time. Didn't take any 4Runner photos, but laid the seats down and set up a nice sleeping area in the back and slept comfortably listening to the rain.

And a buddy and I got excited about getting my 4Runner into better working order for some future adventures (hunting season is going to require some good reliability that it doesn't currently posses) so today what I've done with my classic T4R is I have been reading this forum a ton and getting great info, also been under the hood even though I'm not super experienced at this stuff. If I can solve a major issue with my vehicle I'll have many more adventures to report. Right now I'm legitimizing my non-spam-robot status and contributing to the community so I can get maybe start a thread and get some answers later!

Toasted my rear diff at Pizmo Beach. Not even on the beach driving on the last leg of the trip there. If I ever get it home I'm really curious as to what the heck happened.

Got her runnin decent on Saturday after taking her swimmin about two months ago. After a new brain (ECM), starter, flushed fuel system, new fuel filter, and all new gear box oils.....I attempted to back her into the carport and the door flew open hitting a metal pole (the door things that keep it in open positions had been removed for speaker wiring from previous owner).... Almost ripped the door off and bent the hinges on the passenger side and said in my previous post this thread, i wasn't able to remove the interior door panel without cutting and splicing into the automatic lock/window harness... After labelling and cutting the wires I attempted take the door off too beat the hinges back into place with a BFH, and I discovered the previous owner had also welded the top hinge to the chassis... After multiple times of adjusting the bottom hinge to try and get the door to line back up with the striker plate I couldn't get it just right.. I gave up and popped the plastic off the passenger pillar to put an 1/8" shim in between the striker and nut plate. Long story, i know, but i finally got get road worthy and it rained hard tonight while driving her home and blew the wiper fuse! She just wants me to spend all the time i can playing under her bonnet and inside her cab. Hahaha. Tons of parts in the mail more updates to come!

Sounds like your having a string of PO issues. I went through the same thing with my sons 92. I am still shocked on the number of issues and worn parts. Everything was trashed except the outside which almost looks OK. I've had a few Toyota trucks and 4 runners and never had worn hinges but this pig did. I'm surprised the PO welded yours on. You have to ask why weld when you can simply thread in the bolts. Were the threads trashed? Good look

Not at all. the threads were fine. And the PO seemed to have tweaked too much. All the wiring is done in small gauge speaker wiring and electric tape just stuffed into odd places. No real splicing or insulating to ensure decent connections. Once i very another DD ill be doing a 3.4 swap I've got lined up. Engine is waiting for me but it might be a year or two. Just need it to last that long lol.

Hoping it's not too costly to fix. Pls keep us posted on what caused failure, and if there's anything we can do to help prevent it on ours, too.

Upon returning from Utah for volunteer work to clean-up and tour of Lake Powell...
Replaced spark plugs, checked timing, smogged... 31 years young and still going...

Next on list:
Replace load-bearing upper ball-joints with OEM (onhand from Toyota parts Deal). Driver side boot leaks and now has play.
Replace pitman arm and idler arm, both of whose knuckles have play. On tight budget and tie-rod ends are still good so those stay.

Thanks 4Reak Show.
So far I haven't pinned down why I lost my pinion setup. I took it apart, bearings ok, gears look really good. Races look good, looks good for 12k miles but something changed with the pinion. Races are bottomed in the housing I cant figure out what changed. I'm glad no damage so I plan to go thru the setup again and reassemble.

Sweet deal. Bummer. But please keep us posted if you find something.

The unknowns are always far far worse.

Also, Zuk was super cool via email and if nothing else a chat may help shed some light. If something went wrong, I'd almost promise he's seen it.

Got a few parts in for my 1990. P/S hose (to gear), new belts, a few others. Hope to have time to work on it tomorrow. A few more parts to come and it should be ready for a maiden voyage to LBL.

Waxed, Kayak Spearfishing...

She hadn't been waxed since I got her in 2012 - only TR3 to remove oxidized paint... so gave her a few coats of Turtle Wax...

Sunday I replaced my power steering pressure hose and permanently engaged the front axle with a trick I learned right here on the forum. My 1990 has had an engine swapped into it and the vacuum lines were not a priority for the PO, it seems. I've replaced most of them, but rather than taking a chance on a 27 year old vacuum solenoid or other gizmo, I thought it'd be a good idea to do this simple mod. I seriously doubt it'll ever be used as a daily driver, so I'm not worried about extra tire wear.

Also took a little time and cleaned up the engine bay by removing unused wires and hoses. Had some wires for a long gone stereo and the old A/C hoses cluttering up the joint, along with the 4wd vacuum lines. Cleaned the battery wiring up some too. I think the PO did the wiring with a hatchet.

Took a short test run around the outside of the fence and through the dry edge of our swamp to make sure the 4wd was working right

My to-do list includes extending axle, trans and xfer case breathers, parking brake, and eventually a winch and rear locker. Need to track down a spare tire and rim, too.

Put in a new passenger door lock actuator. That was interesting. Not a terrible job and allowed me to re-key the door lock and match my ignition key finally. And lube window and lock assemblies.

Didn't take any pics, but if anyone wants to tackle the job id be happy to share insight. About 1.5-2 hrs but I have to be slow and QUIET with the baby's room sharing a wall with the garage. Otherwise, pretty straightforward.

Gonna tackle the other actuators eventually. They're still hit and miss after 22 years/250,000 miles. Not bad Toyota.

Today, I noticed an issue with the rear end of my 95......... then I tried to figure it out. Then I realized I couldn't find any help, so I signed up for a forum full of seemingly very friendly, helpful individuals to ask my question. Then, upon trying to ask said question, the aforementioned forum informed me that I needed to post more replies before I could make my own thread, so I began searching for threads to reply to that wouldn't be considered spam so I could ask my question........................................................................................................................!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11

ARGHHHHH

Anyways, the sum***** makes a clunk from the ass end that goes with road speed and the rear wheels clunk when you grab onto them and really shake hard towards and away from the truck. If you're browsing and have a thought...... fill me in!

The PO of my new '90 decided to get crazy with a pair of wire cutters! Seems like everything under the hood of this truck has been pulled off and reinstalled with a single bolt or left hanging. Just noticed today that the driver side valve cover has 3 bolts finger tight holding it on! Who knows where the rest of the hardware went.

In their destructive wave, they removed the ALT 80a fuse, left the holder, but lost all it's hardware to mount the wires. Not to mention multiple wires were cut inside the fuse/relay box. That was fun trying to figure out what went where!

Managed to get the fuse box fixed up, 80a fuse replaced, and powered the chassis to see what worked with the key on. So far I have exterior lights, dome & map lights, power door locks, horn, flashers, radio, wipers, and the rear window. Still need to figure out the sunroof, power windows, power mirrors, and blower motor.

This is all before I jump into the big issue, stuck or burnt valve on #5.

Wheel bearings? Are your backing plates bolted tight to the axle flange?

Installed a twin stick over the weekend. With a lockrite in the front this should help navigating the tight confines of the shopping center parking lots here in SC. 2 wheel low is going to be bad ass in the drive thrus. #mallcrawling
