What is this plug for?

Stupid newbie question, but what is this plug on the bottom of the transmisson for?

While I was under my TE today perfroming my 10k mile service, I was just looking around and saw what looked to be a drain plug for the transmisson pan and there is also the plug in the photo that has the word "check" stamped on it.

I have not been able to find a dipstick for the transmisson, does this plug somehow check fluid level? How do you refill the trans fluid when you change it?

Surely some of you guys that have had your 4Runners for a while have serviced your transmission by now, and would have an answer for my question.

At the rate that I am running up miles, I will be at 25k in six months or so and will need to know how to drain, change filter and refill the transmission.

I plan on doing the first trans service at 25k and then every 50k miles after that. Just like my other vehicles.

Just trying to learn as much as I can about how to take care of my newest machine.

Do not open that plug under any circumstances. You will let out all the dormant Gremlins and they will over run the 4 runner world! Just take to the dealer and let them do the first change.....and explain to you why you should not open that plug.....be safe.

There is no dipstick, and that is the hole you use to fill and check fluid level on the trans. Fluid change interval is 100K miles. When you price Toyota WS fluid, you won't want to do it ever 25K.

100k miles? Wow that is unbelievable.

Thanks for the response, I am definitely going to have to buy a service manual for this vehicle.

By the way, how do you like your Shrockworks sliders? Were they hard to install?

By the way, how do you like your Shrockworks sliders? Were they hard to install?

They're good. If I were to do it over, I would get a different brand and avoid the wait. Install was not difficult other than the cage nuts can be a bit of a PITA. Had to take a grinder to get them to fit some of the holes in the frame.
