What Offset for a 98 4wd?

Buddy is about to re-invest in his stock '98 SR5 4wd. He's planning on a mild Bilstien 5100 lift and new tires/wheels. He wants to run MT 2655/75r16's (looking hard at the MTZ's). His stock rims are beat up and he wants to know what offset or backspacing he needs. I don't know enough about the 3rd Gens to help him.

Any advice?

I saw a post a while back where someone physically measured the backspacing of a stock 16x7 wheel to be 4-5/8". I believe this can be confirmed on other forums as well. I found a website a few weeks ago where you can plug in your wheel size and backspacing and it will tell you the offset. I plugged in the info above and it said the offset is +16. So, to answer your question, +16 offset, if you trust the internet.

Pretty sure the correct offset depends on a couple factors

Does he wanna stay under the fender?

What width wheels is he looking at?

Most aftermarket wheels that fit close to stock have a 4.5" backspace.
-for an 8" wide wheel that's a 0 offset
-for 8.5" that's close to -6 offset give or take

Obviously less backspace if you want them to stick out more.

Thanks for the responses. Yes, he wants to stay inside the fenders if possible. He wants to run a mild lift with 265/75r16 MT tires w/o rubbing. He is just starting to look at rims, his choice of width will be based on what's recommended.

What would work best for the above set-up and no rubbing? 8" wide and 0 offset?

I think what you will most likely hear the most here is "hit up Craigslist for some nice stock toyota wheels"

They are made to fit, simple as that. And there are some really nice looking ones out there.

If he wants aftermarket, 4.5" backspace seems like the magic number. Just gotta remember that as the wheels get wider more tire will stick out. Example, we have 7" wide stock wheels, with 4 5/8" of backspace. So an 8" wide wheel with 4 5/8" backspace will stick out 1" more than a stock wheel.
