whats up with this whole "plasti-dip" craze?

I've watched numerous youtube vid's, read a bunch of good, bad and neutral reviews. Has anyone ACTUALLY done this to their 4runner or car/truck?

Not saying I want to.. but, it might be worth it IF it holds up better and if it's cheaper/same cost as buying paint and all the prep stuff, etc etc. I'm not a newbie to painting, i know about it pretty well and have done it before. Just really curious to the product itself.

I'm pretty much on the same page as you. Haven't done it, but still debating. There is already plenty on this forum about plasti dip. Just search it. If done right it looks good, and if done with plenty of coats it is more durable and comes off easier.

If you do it, post pics.

Plasti dip is basically an easily removable paint. Its convenient, fast, and easy. Great for emblems and small details, as well as testing a look on the vehicle. Definitely not the most durable, but my wheels, emblems, grill, and bumpers, as well as license plate valence are all dipped black. It holds up in the car wash and pressure wash. It is difficult to clean, but possible. Easily scratched. I think it's best purpose is a temporary look, or testing a look, but paint is always the best way to go. Mine is temporary, picking up new wheels soon, working on a satoshi grill, and new bumpers should be on the way sooner than later as well. Go to your local Home Depot, pick up a can and play with it on a rim or emblem.

I've done some chrome on the 4r and blacked-out the silver trim on a friend's FJ. I checked-out her FJ a few days ago and it's starting to peal/ break-down after about a year, but that seems reasonable. Applying it takes a little practice like anything else.....I had some issues getting a consistent texture. After picking up some nasty pinstripes on a trail run, I'm thinking about getting a spray gun and doing my whole truck. Not sure how it will hold-up, but it's better than bare paint, and a heck of a lot cheaper than vinyl wraps. Anyway, the best thing about it is that it's totally reversible.

I plasti-dipped the chrome fog bezels on my wife's Focus and finished them off with a couple coats of Duplicolor semi gloss clear which does add durability and still can be removed since the paint is just covering the dip.

I've plastidipped all of my emblems, my door handles, grill, and cell phone case. I love it! I also helped a friend do quite a bit of plastidipping on his Polaris RZR and it has held up great on the trails.

The best part is there is basically no prep! Just clean the area with alcohol to be sure there isn't any oils on the surface and tape off a square around the area. No sanding!! Emblems do not have to be removed and you don't have to tape off the insanely small gaps between the letters.
The dip will peel right off. It really is as awesome as Fonzie (from dipyoucar.com) makes it sound. The only thing that I've not been able to do successfully with plastidip is get a clean tape/paint line (for two-tone).

My only suggestions
Keep the cans as warm as you can.
Shake them a lot.
Don't go too thick at once, do multiple light coats.
Keep the nozzles clean.
Give it at least a week or maybe 2 before you go through a car wash to give it time to cure.

It's very forgiving! If your can does get a little too cold or something and it gets a little sputtery just warm your can back up and spray another coat it will cover over just fine and blend in. For $5-$9 a can (depending on where you buy it and the color) you really can't go wrong because if you don't like it you can just peel it off.

Gotta love the TN hills! I truly love the beach but deep down I think I would be lost without a good curvy back road.
You're very welcome! IDK what part of TN you're in but I know that you can get plastidip at lowes, home depot, and pep boys here (Knoxville area) cheaper than you can from dipyourcar

Lol, definitely not a beach person! it's pretty and all, but i ain't got no good reason to even stick my feet in the ocean. more of a lake/creek/river guy myself lol.

ANYWHO, i'm from middle TN.. southern middle. grew up in lynchburg (where jack daniels is made) super small town, 1 red light, everybody knows each other, etc etc. now i live in murfreesboro, where MTSU is.. bout 15-20mins from nashville. I'll be sure and check out one of those places for it, asap!

From what I've seen, plasti-dip is good for small pieces like trim and emblems. I even did a section of my hood. Its nice that its not permanent, and leaves no traces. I used it to see what it would look like, and ended up leaving it...holding up well after a year. Its also nice that you can spray another color over the top of it...its a satin-flat finish.



As for entire vehicles, that's still iffy. I'm sure it makes a nice 10ft paint job, but its nothing I would want to spray over my entire truck.

There have been tons of members on here using Plasti-Dip on various parts of their vehicles. I threw some on my emblems and will be doing the rest of the chrome. So far it's gone through the winter here with no issues. It's a nice easy and inexpensive alternative to painting pieces.

I have done my silver bumpers black, I think it changed the whole look of the truck. Just like the others have said its great for smaller things and changing it up a bit!! I know Pepboys has all different colors!! Just cover the area around whatever your spraying, I learned the light mist is a pain to get off.
