What's your top speed?

95 in the 4runner, i only slowed down because it smelt like shit.

110 in the TDI Jetta, slowed down for not wanting a speeding ticket.

99 in the Defender, this was the most fun, i had to strategically do this, at 80 you cant hear the music, at 95 all the window were rattling and at 99 i really couldn't hear much, i hit an incline so the speed was unsustainable.

Truthfully 110 isnt fast, it feels no different than going 80 when the rest of the people are going 55, It is all relative to your surroundings.

In my '96 with 285's, I went an indicated 75mph. That was driving it home from Texas after buying it. Never went over an indicated 70 after that.


In my '99, with stock size tires, I went 80 on the way home from Conneticut. Haven't been past 75 since.

Typically I'm in the 75-80 range on the highways and as long as it's straight. It can feel kinda skethy on curves at those speeds.

When I was younger and dumber I had my '00 Prelude up to 140 (drag limited) a couple of times. That car truly felt like it was on rails.

Even at 75 it feels a bit unsteady going around corners. Like it's going to fall over.

100 mph to Vegas and back passing semis scared me lots, it was almost as if someone slapped my truck to the side everytime I passed one.

Mine consistently cuts off at 106 mph It feels solid throughout and the tach isn't even at 4K for that speed. I think the 3.4L sounds beautiful and feels very smooth over the 3.5k rpm mark.

I generally drive 80-90 MPH on I-5, I've hit the governor a few times passing semis on two lane roads out to Nevada, I don't enjoy doing it though... My biggest pet peeve is the wind noise generated at high speeds.

Fastest I've ever been in a car is 173 in a Corvette ZR-1, it was fun but scary at the same time. LOL

Had my '99 to 108, then it limited. Bone stock at the time. Never had my '94 past 90, nor do I care to. With 317k on the odometer that is asking for trouble.

Two weekends ago, we were going to the Wichita Mountains which are about a 1.25 hour drive from here down a turnpike with a speed limit of 75mph. I was cruising along smoothly without any worries, then I looked down and saw that I was going 98mph. I was surprised that the car felt so smooth and stabile at that speed.

Just to crest the triple digits I pushed it up to 105 and it still felt very controlled, but I feared the ticket it would bring and brought it back down to 82 where I set the cruise control. Normally keeping it a 7mph or less above the speed-limit will keep you without a visit from OHP around most of Oklahoma.

Is it possible that half of us are feeling unstable at 85-100 because our wheels are not balanced correctly? I was recently reading on this fine site about that Hawaka adapter or whateva the thing is called. I asked the tire dept. at my work and they said they cannot do lug centrics. How likely is it that half of us have improperly balanced tires?? I had never heard of this adapter and at around 110-120 kms ( I'm in Canadia ) I get an unnerving shimmy, I can't see this being normal? my first gen did 150 kms before it felt sketchy.

I drive 80-85 pretty much all the time on the highways, by us with no issues... I am running 33's and the highest I have had it too was about 105+ while trying to keep up with my roommates bike. It wasn't any different then 70 ish like normal though.

You may want too look into replacing some steering parts if it gets squirrely at 60 miles an hour...

What tires do you have specifically? I'd be willing to bet you have some E-rated LT tires, and are confusing the load index rating, with a speed rating.

Beyond that, a 3rd gen 4Runner has to be in near stock configuration (no grossly heavier and oversized tires, roof racks, or other extraneous add-ons that add weight and hurt aerodynamics) and in good running order, and under near ideal conditions, to even reach the 106 mph limiter. That is the governed speed according to Toyota's own specs. Higher readings seen on the speedometer are just speedometer error.

At altitude in Colorado, (you lose 3% of the engines power for every 1000 ft gain in elevation) it doesn't make enough power to hit the limiter anyway.
