wheel well cover in 3ird row seating using up lots of cargo space

So was a bit surprised to find how much room the wheel well covers in 3ird row seating setup seems to be using up rear cargo space in the back with 3ird row seats folded down. I actually had more room side to side between wheel wells in my old compact suv; 2000 3.3L Pathfinder.

what's the room like without the 3ird row wheel well armrest seating setup?

Is there a way to get a roomier setup by removing the wheel well covers? Best packing setups? I like to keep my long haul trip stuff sitting with weight low and under the rear tono cover. suggestions appreciated.

- holy smokes - this site is so active, so many new posts that posts from yesterday are well buried a couple of pages back in a day.

Looks like the 3ird row also takes up 5" of cargo floor height!; that's why its smaller! Anyone mod-ed this? Whats under that 5" space? Dam, never noticed this until I started researching.
