When will the Bilstein 6112 be released?

Hi,

What are these shocks set up for? Cruising/overlanding or hauling ass through a desert?

I have 5100s with stock spring and prefer to cruise the desert a a good rate. 5100's tend to more bouncy over whoops.

Should I go with Fox for desert?

...............I understand that they are beefier but are they good for desert driving?

Did you watch the video? Looks pretty good in the desert to me?

:iagree:
Maybe he didn't watch the video. I thought by me sending him the direct link that "included a video" that he could see first hand and answer his questions directly!
You can lead a horse to water.....

Anyway, 4runick, go back and watch the vid!

I was reading through adio3x build thread and he put the 5160s through the ringer as you can see from the pic that I stole from his thread. Here are a couple quotes from his thread that I thought people here would benefit by reading. I guess Im going to be picking up some rear bump stop extensions.

Those were my 3rd set. Probably got about 20k out of each set. Word of caution, get extended bump stops if you want to run those 5160s. Toytec stopped honoring my warranty after the guy that I had been working with left after the 3rd year. Told me to talk to Bilstein and they were saying it was installed incorrectly, which is BS.

I never had bumpstops on while I had the 5160s on, which was my first mistake. I put them through the ringer, very harsh desert bombing in utah & very flexy off cambered rock crawling & the shocks kept bottoming out and spewing oil. I would get either a 2" or 3" metaltech bumpstop, I have the 3" right now with my icons.

In this post, http://www.toyota-4runner.org/1338639-post469.html, He states he changed the rear springs and the photos show this and he left the stock bump stops installed.

Haven't updated my thread in awhile. Swapped out my rear springs with OME 896s & Bilstein 5160s. So far I love them, its a little bumpy, but I'd rather it be that than have to see that butt sag every day lol.

My understanding is if you keep the standard height rear springs, use the standard height bump stops.

if this is incorrect, someone correct me.

No, you are absolutely correct. I just forgot you were on stock rear springs. I feel like the majority of people that are doing the 6112/5160 combo are doing some sort of rear lift as well with either springs or spacers.

I may be completely wrong on this, so please correct my assumption if I am, but the 5160 is spec'd for a 0-2" lift. The 889 OME spring is for a 2.5-3" lift. If you are using a longer spring then the shock is designed for and running it as hard as he was, wouldn't you expect it to fail without extended bump stops?

On the other hand if you are running a 5160 with rear springs that are from 0-2" in length with greater spring rates then stock (i.e. 2" Icon Overland, 2.0" Toytec Superflex, or 1.5" SAW) then you remain in spec for the shock length and therefore compression and the OEM bumpstops should be sufficient.

This is just the logic that was running through my head, but if this is completely wrong please let me know, I think this information could save a lot of people looking at this "upgrade" $$$, one way (not destroying the shocks) or another (not having to buy extended bump stops).

FWIW I just put 5500 on the rear and while installing I measured things and it was clear would be just barely too long. I went ahead ans added 1/2'' spacers to the outer bump stops as a precaution.

Just pulled the trigger on these with 5160 rear. Going to try the 4th clip with Icon 2" rear springs.

Just trying to decide weather to run 275 tires or cram 285s and cut up my new vehicle

To those that have inquired about the 6112s clunking...we have had some cold days here this winter and I have no had zero noise.

I'm at work right now, but going to post some pics later...I think I ended up with more rake than I expected with my setup in my sig. I initially wanted to maintain a bit of the factory rake so I wouldn't have reverse rake with all my stuff in the back, but the SAWs have not sagged at all. I realize it may be a bit subjective, but I wanted to get people's opinions.

I'm close to ordering new UCAs anyways, maybe I'll just up the 6112s to the next notch (would be 4th) with the install and just level out the truck. The 275s may look a bit lonely, though.

Anyone have noise from their 6112s who has had temps under 40 F?

I just spent a whole weekend up in the Sierras with temps at 30 deg with no clunking from my 6112s. However, my passenger side rear 5160 had a lot of rattling during the trip when going over sharp bumps. Going to put it on the lift this weekend to make sure everything is nice and tight.

I had the same thoughts that you did. 3rd clip up front with Icon 2" in the rear. I'm also carrying about 150lbs in the rear with me at all times. Hope this helps. Oh, also have 285/70-17 KO2s.[emoji41]

So it has only been below 40 deg F once or twice since I have installed them, but I have yet to notice any clunks or noises. I do need to double check the torque on a few things now that I have a few miles on them.

Thanks for the pic. I ended up going with the 4th clip and had to get the BOSS rear shocks with remote resi as they were out of stock of the 5160's. Also ordered 285 duratracs so mentally preparing myself to cut our new vehicle haha. I'm up in Canada so should hopefully have everything in a week or so.
