When will the Bilstein 6112 be released?

Confidence in the 5160's dropped quite a bit....

90 fraking days....

I've had burger king tacos with longer warranties than that.

I concur, go with 2x 5100s as they seem proven for the majority on this forum. letzrace in the Bay Area was one of the early adopters for the 6112s and I believe he is running 5100s in the rear w/ a 1.5" spacer. Maybe he can comment on his experience on the 6112/5100 combo.

oh well on the 90 day warranty, i've had around 16 months of no issues with 6112s/5160s with stock rear springs, and then around 9 months with 6112s/5160s with SAW 1.5" coils (which for the record added around 2-2.5" of lift in the rear). When i added the SAW coils i moved the circlip on the 6112s up to the 4th groove when counting from the bottom up.

Currently im looking to beef up my front coils, is anybody running OME coils on the 6112s? I have added a SSS hybrid bumper (~75lbs), a superwinch with synthetic line (~60lbs), full shrockworks skids (adding an estimated 45ish lbs directly to the front springs) and i have more weight going up front with another battery planned and a ARB dual compressor. I want to buy a front spring to fit around my 6112s that will give me 2.5ish inches of lift and be done with it for a WHILE.

current weight estimate: 180lbs
planned weight additions: 90lbs
50lbs battery & 20lbs compressor, air tank, & mount and i'm adding 20lbs of fudge room in here

i can definitely tell after i put the winch and skids on that there is some drooping in the front and i want to gain some lift back in the front. Looking for suggestions on the spring i need to work for me, as well as what groove does my circlip need to be in when i put the spring on to get me the desired lift back. because i DO NOT want to have to pull out the shock once its reinstalled just to change the circlip setting. at that rate i might as well get an adjustable front coilover via spanner wrench and save myself the trouble...

any suggestions?

Also for the record this is a 41 page thread, i did search for "5th gen 6112 OME coil" and did not find what i was looking for. :hippie:

alright did i show my newb-ness??? since i posted this ive been trying to determine if the OME coils will even fit the 6112... cant find any specs on the OME coil ID...

:help:

also does anyone know which groove the circlip should be on if i move to an OME 886? A guy in my area is selling the OME 886 from a taco for dirt cheap and i want to try to get my ducks in a row on what my plan should be or if these will even work on my ride.

:help: x2

sheesh im having a tough day finding the information i need. please assist oh great and wise (and sometimes wise ass) forum members.

You just better hope that you don't have an issue with a 6112. I talked to them about one of mine and they were saying if they can't fix it then it will be ~6 months before they can replace a single(someone who was helping me stripped the top shock bolt and it can't be repaired).
I ended up buying a new set and sent in the old one for repair. They said it would take a few weeks for them to get to it and look if it can be repaired(I already told them that it can't without replacing the top shock/strut bolt). So they said they will assess and let me know what my options are. They will replace it for less than a new one, but I'll have to wait a long time to get it.

Any recommendation on where to get a single shock replace? Since Bilstein is not going to cover under warranty, I was hoping maybe they consider providing a discount or at cost/invoice to help out the situation as 90 days is pretty lame. It's either I replace 1 5160 or 2 5100s for about the same price. What u guys think?

It's not my truck or $ but I was planning on the same setup when I decide to up grade suspension. Your situation and the others I have read about would have me leaning towards the 6112/5100 combo instead. Even though the valving isn't as good of a match at least you have the tried and true reliability. Isn't that one of the main reasons why we all purchased a 4Runner in the first place?

It is a sucky situation you are in. I hope it works out for you with minimal damage to your wallet whatever you decide. Keep us posted!

Im not saying you should do this, but buy a replacement set and then send in the damaged ones with the new invoice, warranty them, sell or return warrantied shocks.

OME front springs will not work with the 6112 as they are not coilover springs. The 6112 are 14"x3"ID springs and likely 550-600LB weight. I have a set of King 650LB up for grabs which are ideal for additional weight of a front bumper if you want. They are the same as the 6112 springs just with a bump in load rating.

Correct. OME springs will not work on the 6112's.

6112's come with 14" x 3" springs with a 600 lb/in rating. A bump in lb/in is what you need like the kings mentioned. You can try the 650 lb springs or go with 700 lb springs that a lot of armored Tacoma guys go with. Keep in mind, You may have to adjust the C-clip location to obtain the same amount of lift with a heavier spring though.

6112 Issue

Hi Guys, I wanted to check in on this thread after a long hiatus. I installed by 6112/5160 setup back in February 2016. After reading all the issues, I decided to take a good look at the setup. To my immediate dismay, I noticed a great deal of corrosion on the shock body of the 6112's. I am located in NH where the roads and salt/sanded, but I was shocked to see how much corrosion has already occurred. What is more concerning is that one of the shock's top portion (the cap of the shock body, if you will) has cleanly separated from the body and now floats above the shock body since it's still connected to the piston rod.

I've contacted Bilstein and they recommend I use their deposit/replacement, but they don't cover labor. Err. Love the way this setup rides, but after the corrosion and the defect making me wonder if I chose the best option.

That is the scraper cap, not the cap the the shock. It cleans the shock shaft before it is allowed to reach the shock seals.

All shocks will develop corrosion especially in a salty area, its normally just surface corrosion.
See this thread - tacomaworld.com/threads/rust-on-shocks.206736/

This stuff does wonders at protecting shock bodies.

Still, the 6112 have a lifetime warranty so Bilstein should be able to help you with those. If not let us know!

Thanks for all the help in this thread! It really helped me find exactly what I was looking for in a mild lift while improving the ride quality. I went with 6112/5160 set to the second clip in the front and a 10mm spacer in the rear. I ended up with 1.6" front lift and 0.375" rear lift so it's close to level - at least visually. I wanted to keep some rake because I have it loaded down a lot, hence the 10mm spacers for some fine tuning. I still need to measure the frame to see exactly where the rake lands and I may increase the rear spacer or change rear springs later on. This is on a '16 Trail with KDSS.

Initial impressions are very positive. I was worried about upgrading the suspension in fear it was going to be harsh riding after reading various opinions. That is most of the reason for me getting 6112/5160 over 5100's because one would expect they might have improved damping. To my surprise, the ride quality is noticeably less harsh then stock. Big bumps are soaked up very smoothly, while sharp edge small bumps are mostly the same if not slightly more controlled. Highway speeds the floating/bobble head feel of the stock suspension is diminished greatly. I don't feel my head moving around as much. Overall I am very impressed, but these are just initial impressions so we will have to see how I feel after getting some more miles in.

One of my 6112's is leaking, possibly one of the first ones to exhibit leakage....

I have contacted TAP and they are in contact with Bilstein to find out how we are to proceed since these are sold in pairs.
I hope Bilstein steps up to the plate and I am able to purchase 1, send the leaking one back and receive credit for the one purchased.

IMHO, that is what Bilstein should do, they should have replacements just for this reason, to support their customer base when things like this arise.

I have been in contact with Mike and Richard at Total Automotive Performance TotalAutomotiveLV. They have contacted Bilstein in my behalf and have forwarded the following photos to Bilstein.

Now I need Bilstein to do the right thing. My T4R is a daily driver and I cannot afford to have it down while a shock is evaluated for warranty.

2. 6112 - Drivers Side Rear View
3. 6112 - Passengers Side Front View with no leakage

OK, there is definitely something going on here relating to a design flaw. I think you are the 6th person that has reported some kind of a leaking problem on this forum with the 6112s.

Magnetic4R what did you end up doing with your leaking shock? Did you replace w/ something else?

Hmm yeah, seems there have been more than a handful of complaints about the 6112's and 5160's. The bummer is that the 5160's come with a 90 day warranty which is a joke. I hope they replace them in a reasonable time period.
