Ok, ok, OK!
I am going to put some time into hunting. I have decided that I don't want a mediocre system that is a brick once it is time to upgrade.
That means I am going to build one.
Thinking these components (slowly to ease the wallet).
1. Amazon.com: Onkyo TX - NR609 7.2 Channel Network THX Certified A/V Receiver: Electronics
Can be had for ~$259 refurbed. Going to be looking for one around memorial day.
2. Amazon.com: Klipsch RW-12D 12" Subwoofer (Each): Electronics
Can be had for $~299 from Newegg. Just went on sale last week.
3. Speakers - investigating that now
The Energy CF 50 I have are pretty good. I am running them on the Onkyo 709. The Polk Audio Tsi 400 is also a good tower speaker. I almost ended up with them, but got a better deal on the Energy's.
I would suggest going to Best Buy or Fry's electronics, bring a couple of CD's with the music you listen to and test all the tower speakers in your price range, then decide.
If you end up with a pair of speakers that are bi-amp, then I would suggest going with the Onkyo NR 709, since I do not think the 609 supports that feature. I found the sound quality to be lot more cleary since it seperates the high frequencies from the low ones.

I have this sub actually and it is pretty great.
Pair it up with some tower speakers and you will be good to go.
