Whistling on passenger side window?

When the passenger side window is down more than half way, it makes a high pitched whistling sound... anyone know what this is?

Could you be hearing the vortex generators? These are little protrusions that create air turbulence. One set is below the side view mirrors, the other on the tail lights. The 4Runner and many other Toyotas have them, and they do whistle. I can hear mine, but only with the windows open.

This is usually caused by the vehicle moving through the atmosphere in a rapid fashion. Solution: keep the vehicle stationary at all times.

I once had a wistle from the passanger side, it was an aftermarket shorty antenna making the sound. Replaced it back to stock.

Sorry, just realized you don't have an antenna.

It most likely could be coming from the passenger side mirror. My Avalon does it and it is a known complaint. To find out fold the mirror in and go for a drive and see if it goes away. That is my guess.

Try rolling the back window down a tad when you're moving and see if that makes it disappear. The airflow is much better with the rear window cracked slightly.

They're doing their dixie job. Speed up and they'll stop.

HA! Yea the T4R doesn't turn any heads in LA....

Had this too - Addressed it proactively before the mammoth audio install. Wedged some foam between the fuel door and the fuel door frame - rattle gone! I believe I also slapped a small piece of Dynamat on the fuel door for good measure.

I can't say I've observed whistling from the side mirrors, but I have an SR5 with the larger mirrors with the puddle lamps and turn signals on them (I believe the TRD-Pro mirrors are like the TE mirrors?).

There's a TSB on windshield noises. Might be worth looking into if your issue matches the TSB description.

Yea my TEP has the large mirrors with puddle lamps and turn signals and the dohicky's on the top...

I'll have to try the foam near the gas filler... did u put it where the hinge is?

I wedged some thin foam between the actual fuel door and the frame that it mounts on (I believe the door frame also contains the gas-cap holder thingy). The door was apparently rattling against its frame even before the 4KW audio installation .

Check on your window seal.

So you took the fuel door off and put some foam between the door and the body and screwed it back on? dang that seems a bit excessive haha :heh:

Not exactly. If you open the fuel door and inspect it from the inside, you will see it is actually a 2-piece assembly with a frame and an outer skin - my particular fuel door rattle was occurring between these two pieces.

I squeezed some thin foam between the two pieces - mainly close to the hinge area (I believe I used some 1/4" upholstery padding I had on-hand). I also applied foil-lined Dynamat to the inner-exposed portion of the door's outer skin. Rattle exterminated! Doesn't even rattle with the audio system at full tilt (4,048 Watts RMS!).

But, yes, I am indeed excessively anal retentive about my first brand-new truck, and would have likely gone through any means necessary to eradicate that little rattle Luckily, it was an easy fix.

I tried to reproduce the whistle using several window positions on a 200 mile drive yesterday. No joy. Maybe my vent visors are changing the airflow enough to prevent it?
