He got stuck in that? What tires are on that SUV?
Our escapes run GY Wrangler sr-a's and bfg rugged trails. Not only are the tires on that unit pretty well worn for conditions like that, he got it stuck 2 days ago during a huge snow. At the time there was 8-12 inches up there. Even now with the trail pretty well cleared, it had a good bit of trouble on the steeper grades

They're escapes. With the exception I a couple of super duties, they're the only things we have with awd. Or normal patrol vehicles are the new interceptors. They do suck, especially since we have so many unpaved areas that we have to check, but due to our amazing government and its budget cuts, this is what we get. Oh well. If it gets really bad, we have aux lights that they let us put on our POV's. being one of two people on my flight with a 4x4, the runner gets to see some patrol action from time to time

When I made the plunge to buy a 4x4, I looked at everything under the sun (even though I was biased toward the 4R). I gave everything a chance. Given the fact the Escape is front 4WD, I automatically excluded it along with mommymobiles like the Suburu Forester and many others. Must have rear 4WD. That's a real vehicle. Budget cuts, smudgeit cuts. Those vehicles stink. I'll remember your post if I ever get stranded out there on I-70 and need to "depend" on the CHP. I'd rather call Triple A to be honest.

We use the CVPI and are now transitioning to the Tahoe for all our vehicles for some reason even though in Tucson we don't see snow (or very rarely), I wouldn't mind running Code 3 in the 4runner.
One of the most ridiculous things I've seen a pilot do. And if someone watched that and thinks "Badass I want to be a pilot" please keep out of aviation or at least out of my air space. :der:

In IA and IL troopers at least drive Explorers and Trailblazers and Yukons for SUVs, and soccer moms drive Escapes.
I am not a CSPD LEO, nor am I EPSO or CSP. I am in the Air Force and am a cop at the AF academy. CSPD is running everything from AWD hemi chargers to ecoboost exploreres. they're even running the new chevy's, which I think are crap. El Paso County is just running the older impala's. They suck for power and handling, but have a ton of room inside. CSP runs hemi chargers and crown vic's
Please forward all complaints to the Department of Defense Budget Committee haha. Now, I agree that for the purpose of towing, 4wheeling or hauling a load, a good rear drive bias, body on frame 4x4 is the way to go. However, I would take a subaru over just about any other vehicle I can think of for operating in the snow. Subaru's are only front bias with the automatic tranny. In 5 sp they are 50/50 and in the 6sp (sti), you can adjust the drivetrain to be almost completely rear drive. My wife has a forester 5 speed and that thing is damn near unstoppable in the snow. I have had it to the headlights in fresh powder and the thing just never quits. I am fairly confident that baring an obstacle that requires higher ground clearance, our forester is almost as capable as my t4r in the powder

I will :hiding: while I say this...but the Escape is actually pretty decent in the snow, obviously not an offroad machine though. My wife had an 07' and now an 11' and she has never had an issue with it. The last blizzard both were in the garage, the 4R had no issues pulling straight out into the drift and through the unplowed driveway -- I hesitated doing it with the Escape but figured I would see what it had, it did a slip at one point but never seems to slow it down. I was impressed. If you want to see something horrible in the snow try to move her 6-sp Miata!
I'll agree with this. The huge limiting factor on the escapes seem to be the clearance and the tires. When our patrol escapes have fresh rubber on them, they go absolutely everywhere we need them to on duty. I'd never hit the tough stuff with them, but thats not what they're for.
I have a mazdaspeed miata and I laughed out loud when I read your post. I had to move it around the block last year after a big snow and I spent the entire time in one constant "power slide" I was amazed that I didn't get it stuck
The Tahoe's are very nice. We had the 2011 Tahoe's and Suburbans at my last job as a civilian and they were beast's. The only limiting factor to me would be that I believe their top speed is electronically limited to 100 or 110 (maybe more, I don't remember). Might hinder a high speed pursuit
