Who's interested in an auxiliary fuel tank?

The guys over at Cruiser Brothers out of Stockton, CA are working with Long Range Automotive out of Australia on 200-series Land Cruiser aux tanks and are pretty far along--ih8mud thread here. They're offering a 16 (tucked above the spare) and 45 gallon (replaces the spare) aux tank for them--images below.

LRA makes a 36 gallon spare-replacing aux tank for the Prado. In talking to Ward at CB, they've taken measurements from a 2013 GX460 to have a test template made so they can see how it will fit on a GX460/5th gen.

I'd be ecstatic about an additional 30 gallons or so as that would be 800+ miles of range. I can't find the picture, but there's a combo gauge+switch that shows the aux fuel tank level and controls the pump that transfers fuel from that to the main tank.

How many people here would be interested in a 20-36 gallon (unclear how big it would be) auxiliary tank?

They are working on meeting all state requirements. Also on the LC there is a charcoal cansiter/filter on US models, so the tanks will have a cutout to keep the charcoal canister in place (the change in design might shrink the tank a gallon or so).

Before they release the product they are going through the process to make sure it is federal and state compliant. Seems like a cool product. I'll probably wait to see how it works out for a few people on the lc before I jump on board.

Same here. I also love the idea of having to only fill up twice/month and being able to drive up to the mountains (250 mi each way), drive around up there, and drive back on a single tank.

We will satisfy applicable regs as needed and look forward to supporting all US / Canadian spec offroad Toyotas, both 2 and 4 wheel drive versions. A lot of the 6 million trucks sold here since 2000 are 2WD - many used for adventure travel and long-distance travel/towing.

We are in the midst of adapting 200 Series and Prado 120 Series tank kits for our 200 Series and GX470 and 4G 4Runners. Once we have those nailed down, we will offer both kits to the market here.

The 200 has issues with location of the charcoal canister as mentioned and for the 470/4G4R, just need to make sure they fit, including KDSS if present.

For the Prado 150-based North American rigs - GX460/5G4R, we have a test template on the way as the first step in development of a prototype tank and kit for our market. I have a GX460 that was used for first measurements and so far it looks good.

The tanks from Long Range Automotive are aluminum. They CAN provide some of the tanks in stainless for potable water and we will work with you to determine availability, price, etc.

There are some tanks in the market that are "split" with both fuel and potable water in segments, but our partners in Melbourne do not like that configuration for professional/technical reasons.

Tentative pricing for the GX470/4G4R tank kit (33 gallon capacity) when available will be $1,645 plus shipping from Stockton, CA. This will require relocation of the spare from beneath the vehicle and the manufacturer suggests a 5 hour installation time for an experienced shop.

I'm in Sacramento for a while but can only get away from work on weekends and evenings. I can't say I'd buy a tank though, just can't justify it personally.

If it retains the spare, it can't be a skid as the spare will be below it, unless you want to replace the stock tank, which is not what these are. These add an additional tank, at least one of the options will sit above the spare.

I had already jumped in on the ih8mud thread and volunteered to be a test vehicle. I'm in Oregon but would gladly take a road trip to help figure this out.

I'm sure there's a lotta guys closer than me, but if someone has to do it I'm in!

The 5th Gen market is "SADLY" lacking in this department and I want to support a company that can make it happen. $1700 does seem a little steep, but I bet a custom tank wouldn't be much cheaper with a whole lot more things to figure out on your own.

This looks to be shaping up as a complete kit, which is a pretty sweet deal.

I'd be interested in one that replaces the spare. I understand the objection to a combination water/fuel tank, any chance of two tanks, a water and a fuel? I really don't think I need more that 10-15 gallons more fuel

From reading the other thread I think these are what the goals are:

It looks like 3 sizes of tanks will probably be available. 16, 24, or 45. (I think)

The stock filler tube will be swapped with a modified one that has 2 holes, one for each tank. The aux tank will have a float, and some sort of gauge to tell you the level in the tank. When the main tank gets empty you can flip a switch and pump fuel from the aux tank into the main tank. Or you can just pump it over whenever you feel like it.

The trick it seems is to get the newer vehicles to not throw CEL.
