Wife said ABS has kicked in twice now....

So my wife was transitioning freeways this morning and said that the ABS flashed and shuddered without her hitting the brake in the turn. Anyone know what is up with that off the top of their head?

I searched, but think I will have to try and duplicate this before I get any real answers.

It is VSC kicking in. Search for Zero Point Calibration, which should fix it, unless your wife is trying to drive the 4Runner like a track day car.

Hmmm...

The only TC issues I have had relate to stopping while going up my driveway to let my wife out before I pull into the garage. When removing my foot from the brake, the 4R will roll backwards a 3-4 feet before I can apply the gas and the sudden power makes the TC bark for a second.

Are you sure there is a little road sand or something causing a loss of traction while making the turn?

Things to check:

~Tire pressure set properly?
~Tires not too worn?
~Zero point calibration up to date (after a while can become skewed/need to be re-done)
~Wife driving too fast/too hard in a turn for the vehicle? (My ABS/TRAC kicks in on my V8 on sharp turns at times as the weight shifts into a tight mild speed turn, we're talking maybe 20~25mph)
~Wife hovering on the brakes while driving (doesn't have to be very much, enough to trip the brake switch and make the car think she wants brakes)

Have you had any recent work done to it? New tires? Shocks? Alignment?

David

I changed the wheels and tires out on our Limited. It had the 20" wheels before. I changed out to a 265/60/R17 I believe. I can't remember the exact width and aspect. It's a Yokohama Geolander AT.

This was about 4-5 months ago. I will look at the ZPC. Thanks!

Can I ask you a question since it seems applicable to OP's situation. Do you happen to know why changing tires could cause what seems to be the ZPC to go out of whack? In my case, I went from OEM dunlops to OEM sized duratracs, and my traction control went nuts, and almost downright dangerous at times. I tried tons of things, like air pressure, letting the tire mold release agents wear off, etc...and nothing appeared to cure this except for performing a ZPC. Age should not have been a factor since I did my tire swap at ~2000 miles, so I have to assume that it was just the tire change that seemed to have cause it?

I cannot for the life of me figure out why, but only believe it since I saw it with my own eyes, lol. Hopefully you might be able to shed some light on this if you've experienced it in the shop. Thanks!

The only reason I can think of is because the tires are not the same physical size. I've seen this many times since we play with a lot of brands at the dealership. Tire size on the sidewall does not mean uniform physical tire size! We've seen some brands be wider and taller than others of the same size rating. Another issue is if an alignment was performed, with many modern vehicles the ZPC and TRAC systems need to be relearned after alignment, so combining that with different sized tires could cause that issue.
