Windshield ticks, creaks, noises

This topic just appeared in the ...How much patience do you have thread. I've started this thread to see if windshield noises warrant their own topic.

As with others, the appearance of noises from my windshield seemed to accompany the oncoming of cooler weather. What I get are resonant ticks or high-pitched creaks, kind of like, I imagine, the sound of grains of Uncle Ben's rice hitting the windshield. The resonance seems to be from the glass itself. The sounds come from two places that I can distinguish: the TOP of the windshield, above the driver's side and also near or beyond the mirror toward the passenger side.

These ticks or creaks seem to be caused not simply from hitting bumps but from the body of the 4Runner shifting on uneven surfaces. I've got about 16K miles on my 2011 Trail.

I found a TSB for 2003 - 2008 4Runners, and other Toyota's. Here's a link:

No idea if the sounds some of us are hearing might be related.

Thanks for this thread, and thats funny as it does sound like rice on the windshield. Mine are on both lower corners of the windshield, with the passenger side being louder.

Yep, I've got em too. Bottom center portion.

Same here. The drivers side seems slightly worse than the rest of the windshield. Sounds like more towards the bottom than top.

EDIT: BTW, good find on the TSB. I can see that problem causing the noise we are hearing. I would think they would have addressed the issue with the new body style, but then again, who knows...

I get the same thing. Heard it driving all the way back from LA. Thought a small rock hit the windshield, then the sound kept repeating.

I have it as well. I have an appointment for the breaks squeezing and this noise. So, we'll see what they say.

I'm having the same issue...in NH. Should we call Toyota like with the headlight issue and such (lumbar seats)? Anyone else with this? You have to turn the tunes down to listen for it....heat helps some.

anyone spoken w/ a dealer?

I've been on the road for a week, heading through Louisiana and Texas, eventually to New Mexico. The windshield rattles are increasing, both frequency and locations on the windshield, and I think I'm hearing them coming from the driver's side at the lower edge as well as driver's side top and middle top. I'm hesitant to take the time or to trust the Trail to an unknown dealer.

Has anyone else taken their noises to a dealer? I'd be interested in any news.

Other than these clicks that are about constant on anything other than new asphalt, the Trail is doing great on the road. Getting 20 - 22 mpg with the Destination AT's doing 65 - 70, depending on terrain and winds.

Just under 20,000 KM. mine just started doing this yesterday. Any of you ever have any luck in finding or getting this fixed?

Mine is creaking all the time now. Got my 10k appt coming up and will see what Toyota has to say, which will probably be that it's fine...

Mine creaks like CRAAAZY. but only sometimes. After making my original post i was going to take it into the dealer the next day. Woke up that morning and it wasn't creaking.....typical...


not sure what causes it to creak, maybe temperature related, but when it is it is BAD...

This is not good. My 5th gen seems to develop many of the issues (lumbar, headlight) that get reported on this board a bit later than most. I've not any issues with my windshield yet, but I'll be listening a lot more closely.
