Windshield ticks, creaks, noises

My TE with 4600 just developed a creaking sound last night. Sounds like the windshield is moving around but I can't replicate it so I checked out the link tpirman provided... there's definitely some noise down there so I'm going to try the fix and report back.

I hate it when you have a noise or creak in your vehicle that you can't find, that's the main reason I switched from US built vehicles to foreign. My 12 LTD is as tight as a drum and has no creaks or noise what so ever, my buddy has a 02 Tacoma and that is still as tight as a drum now.

Yeah this is the only noise I have besides some plastic rattles over large bumps but this one is really driving me nuts.

Take it back to the dealership or turn up the volume on your stereo

Noises travel in odd ways through vehicles. I had a metal bumping noise that sounded like it was coming from the front shocks that was ultimately traced to a loose bolt on one of the rear axle control arm. Yesterday I traced down a clanking sound I would have sworn was coming from my driver side door that ended up being my jack bouncing around in it's bracket in the back.

Well I didn't even need to try the zip tie fix, my problem is probably going to be much harder to DIY.

My antenna scrapes every time I pull into my parking garage and the horrible squeaking sound is coming from the body panel that the antenna is attached to. When I press on the metal with my finger I get the cliche squeaky bed sound right up under the windshield.

Last night I removed the antenna and leaned into the body panel with all my weight and it stopped making noise but must have loosened itself up again on my drive into the office.

I've got my first free oil change tonight so they're going to have someone take a quick peek to see what needs to be done. Hopefully this is easy to correct but I'm not going to hold my breath.

Any Updates?!

My 2015 SR5 4R has 650 miles on it and the windshield tick, creak noise is hideous when its cold out. The dealer said they fixed it by removing the upper window stop and adding sound proofing material to a wire harness above the headliner. It did nothing to address the issue. Its going back and will stay overnight so they can drive it while its cold. I know there are other posts about it on here but haven't read a fix for it yet. I drove another brand new 2015 while waiting at the dealer and it did it too. I'm just worried about the techs tearing into my new truck. Any new info on this? Going NUTS

Update

After 3 days with the dealer, the issue has been located and approx. 75% solved. The problem is the cowling between the hood and windshield, and a wire harness that runs into the fire wall underneath. The tech removed the cowling and drove the truck first thing in the morning (low temp approx. 45F) and the tick was gone. They insulated the wires and all contact points. Toyota should issue a TSB for this issue. I drove another brand new 2015 T4R and it had the same noise. Mine still does it a little bit, but it is dramatically better. If it doesn't get any worse, I can deal with it. Hope this helps anyone else with this issue.

Thank goodness for electrical tape (and this forum).

The whole damn cowling is junk. I have a 2013 TE and after the dealer performed the TSB (despite "not being able to replicate the sound" and then blaming my roof rack), I finally started poking around after I read SRMT4R's note above.

Grab some electrical tape, roll it up and wedge into every seam along the cowling. The two main culprits are the round fastener on the passenger side just behind and inside of the hood lift, and the two seams of the smaller inset piece right above the washer fluid canister.

I managed to eradicate about 90% of the sound in under 15 minutes of taping and test driving around the block. Much easier (and cheaper) than trading it in...

Funny. I rented a 2014 SR5 Premium a couple of weeks ago and it had 9k miles on the clock. On the highway it sounded almost like there was a little paper tag on one of the wiper blades that was bufetting in the wind.

Interesting to know they all have that sound

that was the flap in the driver front wheel well it sounds more like.. just needed to be stretched out a little tighter

It sounded like it was coming from the bottom of the windshield, but that may have been what it was I suppose. I know that when I was using the brakes and turning the wheen hard right slowly pulling into driveways, i heard what sounded like rubbing from the passenger side front. I later deduced that it was the mud flap a little loose and making contact with the tire when turned.

Play around with that flap.. have a friend play with it while you sit inside with the door shut and see if that replicates it. Mine also sounded like it was the windshield!

Any chance you could post a pic of the culprit areas you identified and fixed with the the electrical tape?

There is a little plastic piece on the bottom of the windshield(tap around with your finger, you'll hear it) that was making some noise for me, I just put a dab of superglue on it so that it wouldn't hit against the windshield anymore in the wind and that solved my problem.

If you hit reply and scroll down past the text box (where you type your reply) you'll see the additional options bar, under which you'll see four rectangular boxes. The second box is labelled Attach files. Click the button that says manage attachments. A box will open. browse for the pic on your desktop or file, then hit upload. Just be sure the pix is no bigger than 2000 px by 1500 px.

Here are the areas I found making the most noise. If you poke and push around on the cowling you'll find places that creak and tick. It might not sound like much, but have someone else do it while you sit inside and you'll see how much it resonates. The fit and finish of the entire cowling – both the pieces fitting together and how it fits/moves along the windshield are in need of an overhaul.

Well, after a few days of beloved silence, the ticking has come back with a vengeance. The tape is still in place, but I guess it didn't appreciate my attempts to thwart the noise and found some new places to speak up.

Anyone have pics/info about what it takes to remove the cowling? I'm afraid to pry around on those round caps too much, but would love to take the whole thing off and look at the wire harness(es) and anything else I can try to insulate/pad until Toyota decides to do something about it.
