It blinks for 20 seconds or so then stays solid lit. If you park near the tires with the tpms then it will read there signal and the light will go out. You can then drive around aprox. 20 miles or 20 minutes whatever comes first before the light comes back on again.

The answer will depend on a lot of things. I think the TPMS light blinks when it loses the signal. If you park close enough to your TPMS sensors, the vehicle may connect while parked/garaged/etc. Then, when you drive away, it will lose the signal and blink after ~15 minutes or so. After that, I think it stays solid again (or until it goes off after reconnecting when you park near the TPMS sensors again).

My light will be solid then randomly start blinking for a bit while I'm driving. I don't pay enough attention or care enough to see if there's a specific time interval it does this at or for how long. Running aftermarket wheels without TPMS for a few years cured me of that so well that when I don't see the light on I feel like something is wrong.

^ This is exactly how mine behave. My summer tires/wheels sit right next to where I park, and shut the light off when I park, starting the cycle over when I leave.
you could get fancy and take the TPMS off and build a little shuttle with a stem built in and sealed one side, the other is screw on with teflon tape, pump the thing up to which ever psi makes it shut up and store it anywhere in/on the car so it can get read. i believe i read about something like that on the fjcruiser forums.

That's not easy to do, as the tire has to be broken from the rim to remove the TPMS transducer from the wheel. Not exactly a DIY for most.
/tidbit-factoid, barely on topic/
How many of you know that the transducers contain a non-replaceable battery?

If you keep your tires in the garage next to your vehicle, it will reset the TPMS sensors every time you go home and then freak out and blink about 20-22 miles away, then stay lit... then reset when you get home.

Stick your TPMS tire stem sensors in a pvc vessel like this. Pressurize it to 35-40psi and then toss it in the back of your truck. Problem solved.

The problem with blackout electrical tape is then you don't get the use of the sensors during the summer unless you remove and add the tape back each season.
I had programmable TPMS sensors added to my winter tires but the tire shop was unable to get them set correctly.
I bought LightDims and I am pleased with the results.

I would put the original TPMS in the winter tires. If anything I would run the summer tires more like 8 months and the winter 4~ months... at least in my region. Just a thought.
BTW anyone remember the brand of TPMS that you can clone to the same ID as your originals?

So my question is I now have a full-size spare tire on a proper Trail wheel. I don't mind spending some money to get a TPMS for the spare but my question is can I have five programmed? Or would I be better off just putting a standard valve stem in the spare?
That is a lot of work to do twice a year :biggrin2:
Those LightDims are pretty neat though.
The 5th generation 4Runner can only "learn" 4 sensors at a time so there's no point adding a fifth sensor to your spare.
