I too was in this position. I found all the bolts but one was rounded and refused to budge. I eventually got it off by putting a floor jack under the ratchet.

Holy Hell?! Really?! Did you replace the bad bolt with a new one?

Thanks to all of you DIY folks I have braved up and installed Tru-Cool 4544 unit 20,000btu. I'm running 145F on a highway and highest temp topped at 169F. I have also installed Magnefine 3/8" Inline Magnetic Transmission Filter on a return line. Here are my pictures.

I would suggest also getting around 8 feet or so of 3/8 trans hose. The hose that comes with the kit seemed to be a smaller size. The steel lines on our trucks are 3/8 so it makes it much easier to push the hose on especially at the crossmember where the steel lines to and from the tranny end. I also needed extra clamps, washers and some bolts/nuts.

Ordered mine today. Only had this thing for a week but reading about the pink milkshake is freaking me out, so I will avoid it at all costs.

Recently when I did my timing belt etc... I also replaced the radiator so I took the oportunity to mount the cooler up against the condenser and routed the hoses through the a/c line hole. I haven't driven it on any slow uphill curvy mountain roads yet which is where it got the hottest before(cir. 230). So far in daily driving it seems to be about 10 deg cooler, not a big difference.

I returned the b&m70266. It was too big to fit in front of the condenser. The 70264 was a better fit.

1st Post! Ive been reading a lot and this is a great forum...

My brother got a strawberry milkshake and I decided to install a B&M 70268 cooler on my 00 4Runner and quit worry about it.

question, are you guys using the lines that came with the kit or are you using bigger lines. I know I'm going to have to buy extra but should I buy more of that size of a different size.

here is my install on my 01. this cooler is from a ford explorer, and with a little time and moding, fits perfectly. as is noticed, it is on the driver side. pass. side is too crowded. hoses are next. :keyboard:

Hey all. . I just want to say this site is awesome and very helpful. Doing my 3rd major mode and getting the b&m tranny installed this weekend. .. I just have a few questions.
Completely bypass lines into radiator check!! I know which lines are what out of tranny check! Purchase 8ft of 3/8 hose and extra clamps check!

Ok so what is a better position for cooler instal ports facing left with send line on top?

Or ports facing down?

Is the tranny cooler have a send or return line designated on it? Or it doesn not matter?

And what is a good atf to buy to top it off?

Ill be installing my b&m tonight, I tried another style and it didnt cut it at all, so will probably use both the coolers, since I bypassed the radiator totally.

Alot of people say the IN is at the bottom and the OUT is at the top, some put them in the other way, what do the instructions say?

This is a great thread. I ordered my cooler (B&M 70264) and will be installing it soon. I found these instructions on recommended install fitting position. It says to have the fittings on top or the side. If fitting position is to the side, make sure the inlet is on the bottom and outlet going back to the tranny is on top.

The instructions also says to hook up the outlet from the radiator to the inlet of the cooler. Is this recommended or do I bypass the radiator completely? Is adding an inline filter also recommended?

Hate to dig this up, but can I install this even though I have a manual? I am asking because I get smoke/a lot of burning smell from, what I am guessing, my transmission whenever I go offroading. It happens whenever I am stuck and have to work my way out with a lot of gas.

I don't know if it's because I am slipping the clutch or I don't have enough fluid, but would this work on a manual transmission 99 4runner?

You don't really need one for a manual transmission unless you are doing some kind of race application. Some good oil should be more than enough in your case.

Although, what you're smelling is probably your clutch. Wouldn't hurt to check the transmission oil though.

The only way you don't have the stock cooler is if your radiator has been replaced with one that does not have the built in cooler. I think this is pretty much impossible since lots of people have searched for that type of rad with no luck.

Even if your situation matches my above description you would still have the original cooler lines. They would just have to be connected together some how. Post some pics of your rad and the underside of the front of your truck so we can see what's up.

No 3rd Gen 4runner came with an external tranny cooler, we all have had to add them.

In compared to other vehicles, installing one on a 4runner is easy.

Most members opt for the B&M 70264 or one similar in kind. Just use the search function for options.

Kball, thanks for that info.. I double checked and DO have the lines there. I expected to see them behind the radiator bottom, not underneath it.

I'm gonna tackle installing my ext tranny cooler & bypassing the stock in radiator setup later this week. I have searched & read numerous posts here & yotatech but I haven't found an actual writeup. Does one exist and if so could someone provide a link please
