Yaw Rate and Acceleration Sensor Zero Point Calibration

I did my lift few months ago, I did n't know the calibration and didn't feel anything unusual. Do I still need have it done? Thanks!

No, not if you don't notice anything usual with the VSC,TRAC or ATRAC. I've never had to do it and all the electronic nannies have worked as advertised for over 3 years along with the other four 5ths I've lifted or helped lift. Most do not need it.

If you're not having any issues such as waring light or the VSC kicking in then no, you don't HAVE to do it. However, after installing a lift, i would do it for 2 reasons.
1) It won't hurt and is easy to do, takes about 10 minutes.
2) It resets the zero point. Assume, for simplicity, the VSC kicks in when things get 5% away from zero and after installing a lift you are already 2% off, that means that one way you're only 3% before the VSC kicks in and the other 7%. In short, even if you aren't having issues, you might not be were the VSC works at it's best anymore.

I have an 03 4runner ans we tried to perform the zero point calabration using these instructions, but when we looked at the obdII it seems that there's no connector in terminal ts12. picture below but it's upside down

thanks in advance

after doing a little more research I think I'm suppose to jump 4 and ts14 instead of ts12, correct me if I'm wrong
thanks

After trying it on my own, it did not seem to help much. I took it to the dealer and they performed the calibration no questions asked and free under warranty. It still does it, but it is definitely better.

I had this done at my first service. I'm running a lift with larger tires. It seemed to help as it didn't do it for awhile then did it briefly then today did it again. I'm not sure why as it seems to not be in danger of loosing control. I guess it's the vehicle trying to be smarter than the driver and that's not always the case.
So I see from your post that you had it done then still notice it at times. Would this be to be expected from time to time? Each two times since the z p cal it seemed not necessary to engage. My other question for anyone is I don't see the purpose each time it's engaged itself. The brake pedal pulses madly and it seems to pull a bit, then it stops as suddenly as it started.
One more quick question, has anyone saved their ass by this feature? Did it feel like it prevented disaster that maybe would have likely occurred otherwise?
Thanks everyone, great info here.

Mine kicks in all of the time. I can easily make it kick in on corners, even though I am only going a moderate speed. I have learned to deal with it, but it is a pathetic system IMO.

I took my rig in for its 5K service and explained how it is a safety concern since it tries to pull you into oncoming traffic in corners. The sh*tty dealer I went to said it would not be covered under warranty, but they would gladly do a recal if I paid for it.......No Thanks!!! Don't think it would make it any better anyway.

Good luck, Jason

Thanks for your response. It seems like there's a gyro or something in these and when it tilts a bit to much it goes nuts. I wish it could be toggled as needed for the conditions.
No whim wondering how many others have had the zero point cal done and still feel like this intrudes on their driving habits. I'm with you for the possible danger of being sent to far one way or the other.
Your dealer is lame for not addressing your concerns better. I'm wondering if mine was not done properly the first time, or its just the way it is. Deal with it.

Yea, I performed the manual recal on my own a couple of times.....No change. When I first bought the vehicle, I took it back to the dealership I bought it at to get my heated seats installed. I asked them to recal it then and they did. Once again, no change. That is why I think I will just have to live with it. I guess you can always turn it off before you start driving to bypass it all together. None of my other vehicles have this feature and miraculously I am still alive.

Hey guys, mine was doing the same when I had the 265/70R17 Nittos on. Same annoying predictable thing in the corners, if I exceeded a certain speed in the corners, the traction control would kick in, and the front outside tire would start breaking.

When I went with the really wide 33/12.5R17, equivalent to width of 315, everything got cured. I can go into a corner really hard, even scared I may roll over the truck, but none of the previous traction control crap is present.

The larger A/T tires we put on are great off-road, but you do sacrifice dry traction. Try lowering the psi enough (by 5?) and you should not see that happen again, or go with wider tires as I did.

I do not think it has anything to do with the zero point calibration, as I did the same thing in the beginning, but it did not help- at least in my truck's case.

I called one dealer and ask them if they do recalibration, service guy said that Toyota does not let them. I called another one and service says:
-"Easy, when would you like to come in."
It is $95 to do it.
Weird….

Yea, Broadway Toyota did a recal on mine no questions asked, even after I installed the lift. It seemed to make it better, but I still have the very annoying, overly sensitive skid control. I think I will see if they will do another recal at my 10k service coming up.

10K??? must be nice. maybe i try to ask when i go for service.
i was in your area yesterday. we drove 50+ miles trying to find some mud. we drove by power lines and it was gated. i guess they do some kind of work out there. :baby::Cry:
i was hopping to come back home covered in mud. :eyebrows:

Yea, just rolled over 9k today.

You can head up to Jones Creek or over Larch Mountain. There should be mud up there.

DO NOT pay for a ZPC! After realizing how easy it is, the only way I can recommend anyone going to the dealer to have them perform the re-calibration is if you have no access to a flat surface, and even then I would just tell you to drive around till you find somewhere flat.

It literally takes under ONE minute once you figure out the process; and all you need for a tool is a piece of wire with two ends stripped off as a jumper.

Scroll up a bit in this thread and you will find an explanation of some missing steps I found when following the FSM instructions and you should be set.

Glad I stumbled across this! So my truck is behaving as some have described above. While coming around a corner at a very reasonable speed, outside wheel starts braking out of nowhere, pulling vehicle out of the turn into oncoming lane. Terrifying at first then infuriating once I realized what happened. I can't believe it is even legal for a vehicle to automatically apply braking that is not driver initiated. I can run through this cal when I get home but there is another issue. I turned VSC off immediately, but it turns itself back on after a couple minutes. also infuriating. Any ideas there?
My thought on this pitch and roll sensor...as any sensor, I'm sure it simply translates a given degree of roll into an output voltage value that is interpreted by the computer box as either "everythings cool bro", or "oh shit we're gonna die!" Then activates ABS on whichever wheel the scientists in Japan said would prevent me from dying.
So what I think would be cool is if I/someone/we could figure out exactly what that "everything's cool bro" value is, remove the pitch roll devil box and send a constant "everything's cool bro" voltage to the computer box.
My 87 is completely devoid of this system and it has yet to spontaneously flip over.

Thank you for your input!!!
I will grab my level and go find some flat surface. I just don’t want to make it even worse. Thats why i thought to go to the dealer.
When I had toytec leveling kit i had no problems. Its occurred after install of bilstein shocks.:becky:

Thanks for this post, I used this info with my shop to recalibrate my sensor as it was too sensitive once my car was lifted

Did your recal help? From what I have read, TE's seem to be more affected by this issue. Not sure how true that is, but it is annoying.

Post lift, traction control was kicking in prematurely for my wife on two different ooccasions and for me it was not kicking in when I made sharp turns in the snow. I did the ZPC and it still kicked in too soon. I looked over the directions again and apparently I had the damn thing upside down, so I was sticking it in position 5 and 13, I,m hoping this did not mess something else up. Will look into that tonight. Anyways for those who did the ZPC and it didn't work, make sure you stuck it in the right hole :) eddiebx you are iin every thread man! Thanks for all your help! And thank you OP for doing the leg work on this, much appreciated!

Thanks for politely calling me a post whore, LOL. :tape:
