Brand loyalty. Everyone seems to know some guy's uncle's dad that drove his 1987 Pickup to 400,000 miles on no oil changes, so they've heard they're pretty tough. Jeeps are pretty crap too but they sell based on brand loyalty and good marketing. Obviously I'm no marketing analyst, but these trucks are stupid money. An overseas Hilux (now built in Thailand) at least has a boxed frame.

We'd have traded the ZR2 off recently if it weren't for the fact that we still have need for a pickup truck with a bed, and the wife really likes how it looks and rides. It's not a very expensive truck. No more so than a 4Runner or a Tacoma. Our old Raptor cost a lot more.

It is interesting in the thread that you sent that Toyota deleted RSCA button on the newest Tacoma because: “Hey guys, I work with Toyota. The reason that the 3rd gen does not have the RSCA off button is due to the fact that it now has an Accelerometer built into the truck that not only looks for the angle of the pitch like the Colorado but it also looks for how fast it is rolling or tilted to one side or another. Meaning if you are moving slow and the truck is at a crazy angle they won't deploy but if it is rolling at a higher speed then it will deploy.”

Frankly i would have prefer RSCA button. Oh well.

Yeah, i drooled over the ZR2 when it came out. Has it been reliable for you? Any issue?

Because my family is 5 people, the ZR2 is too small. My brother got the new Raptor...and damn, that thing is impressive. But of course, long term reliability is unknown.

Not sure about brand loyalty but i think its past reputation is well deserved. My other brother is thinking about getting Tacoma...he’s a Jeep guy...but he is considering it because of its past reputation (not so much brand loyalty obviously...he has never owned Toyota). But he did cross it out eventually because of DRUM rear brakes.

If the frame is well-designed (using a lot of ultra high-tensile steel), then boxed vs. C-frame matters less. I used to be very critical of Tundra’s rear frame but reading up on it, i can see that Toyota uses high quality steel.

Now, the rear DRUM brakes on the Tacoma...i will sh!t on it day in and day out.

Reputation.. that's the word I was looking for. Haven't there been issues with the new 6-speed? Differential issues too? Drum brakes were pathetic when the 3rd gen 4Runner came out, and now it's downright unacceptable. I personally think it's US market cost-cutting if they make a similar sized truck overseas with a boxed frame. Nissan Frontier is the same as the Nissan Navara overseas - boxed frame. One advantage of a C-channel should be that it doesn't trap dirt and moisture inside to cause rust, but obviously that didn't help Tacomas of the past either. Hopefully these new frames are coated better. Compared to the ZR2, a TRD Pro Taco just isn't as impressive for the money. The factory snorkel for 2019 will definitely appeal to the Instagram wheelers though. I bet they upgraded the door seals too.
 
Yikes. While this is a GM problem, this business practice is not exclusive to GM. It is unfortunate today, but vehicles are usually the most expensive thing a person owns and it becomes immediately personal.

No problems whatsoever. The week after we bought it, we took it on a trip from Tennessee to the panhandle of Florida and back and it was extremely comfortable for the trip and I didn't really notice any issues with the transmission searching for the right gear or anything like that.

The 8-speed transmission *DOES* shift a lot but it does a good job of keeping the truck's engine in the power band. No complaints there.

Yeah, agreed on the long-term reliability. My wife asked me if I wasn't sure I wanted to wait and do another Raptor in a few years instead of getting our 4Runner but that was a no-brainer for me. I've been wanting a 4Runner for a while now.

Our Raptor was a 2011 and had the 6.2L V8 engine. I loved that truck. I'm not sure I could love the Gen 2 Raptor the same way.
