I just saw this in the paper. 4th generation re-call.

Toyota recalls 2.17 million vehicles in US *| ajc.com

From my local paper. I will go ahead and make this a sticky, at least for awhile.

This recall is pretty silly since the whole problem was made up same as the Balloon Boy incident. I could use new floor mats though.

Mine was in the dealer today and he "told" me of the recall. I asked that they "not" do it and I just had to sign off on the service order.

I told the Service Writer I was smart enough not to put 8 layers of mats on top of each other.

Ugh I so regret bringing mine in. I miss my old pedal. They did order me a new one though because the one they altered isn't cutting it.

The new mats are awful as well. I complained about them being mismatched (black versus the original grey) and they said, oh well.

I just did the update to the ecu myself since I could. But I'm keeping my pedal. If they guy I sell it to in 20 years wants a new pedal he can get it his own damn self. I've done a thousand of these recalls and hated every single one.

Amen to that, I am not a fan of the recall myself... though you do get to use SST #54WZ4LL which is a little fun.

But really I'd rather get a new pedal (By the way, Acid have you seen what the updated pedal looks like? Not one of our customers knows about/wants that and so I haven't seen it at our dealership...)

Yeah. The new pedals look exactly like the precut pedals only shorter. If you bought a 4runner with the new pedal in it you wouldn't even know it was supposed to be shorter. I wonder if anyone has been rear ended because they didn't accelerate when their foot slipped of the short pedal.

54WZ4LL is the saw right? We just had the shop buy a band saw. It's a lot faster.

I've had the unintended acceleration a couple times. Absolutely not floor mat related.
My theory is odd computer glitch, perhaps induced by nearby RadioFrequency. Certainly not repeatable (thankfully)

Looks like a big DIY job to replace it myself but I'm looking into it.

I was reading in the paper that now they don't think this problem was connected with the gas pedal or carpeting. Toyota just quickly needed to make the NHSA happy so came up with the gas&rug deal. What they now think is the real problem is small whiskers treeing out of the solder joints inside the electrical control system, of our 4Runners in question. I first read about this problem years ago in a military electronic publication. Said it was caused by the tin in the solder. They said the military was asking their venors to not use solder that contained tin.

Pretty interesting.

I'm mostly on board with the floor mat explanation but retain my own whisker of a doubt having <a href="http://www.toyota-4runner.org/problems-warranty-issues/17181-odd-downhill-engine-behavior.html" target="_blank">experienced</a> sudden, unintended deceleration.

I just had my car serviced today at my local Toyota dealership. They told me they took the pedal off and filed two inches off the bottom so it would not stick. They did not replace my floormats. If someone was told differently let us know.

I still haven't had this done or signed a waiver. My dealership hasn't asked me about it at all. But so far this week a different dealership (that I've never taken my T4R to) in my area has called my cell phone twice and sent a bright orange post card with my VIN hand written on it to my house reminding me I need to get this done. I guess the dealer wants some money from Toyota to get this done. No thanks! I'll pass!

There are all sorts of environmentalists that are rational just like there is are completely irrational "**** the environment, I want my money" types. I'm an environmentalist that drives a body on frame SUV. I'm also an engineer in the automotive industry that constantly weighs cost-benefit. I'm not pretending to save the world or anything, but there is a happy medium between doing what needs done and preserving our land and resources.

My honest opinion is that tin whiskers have nothing to do with this issue because you'd see all sorts of other electrical meltdowns showing up the these vehicles by now (it isn't like tin is only used on the components that have to do with the accelerator). Tin whiskers are just unpredictable enough that they provide a great straw man for guys like Sean Kane who stand to make a great deal of money if they can convince a jury to find Toyota at fault when these Unintended Acceleration suits go to court.

Completed recall work on my 2006 T4R Limited V8

I had 3 recall notices sent to me by mail this year and I finally made an appointment this last weekend to get it done. The dealership modified the pedal and didn't touch my floor mat. They tried getting me to spend $350.00 on recommended work which didn't happen.
