Yukon Zip Locker Review

A couple guys on pirate4x4 and yotatech have this air locker, but I figured I'd post an on going review on this forum.

First off, thank you [MENTION=83666]renosauce[/MENTION] for selling me this locker for a Great price! (He is an excellent seller btw!)

Let's start off with what will be powering this air locker.

I'll be installing this tomorrow and then testing it on Saturday. I'll keep this updated every time I use it.

Subscribed. I did the Aussie about 9 months ago and love it. I think it makes more of a difference off-road than all my other mods combined. I live in the snow belt so I need something different for the front diff. Thought about an LSD but would like to see a ton of pictures on your install so I can decide if I want to tackle it in the front diff on my own or pay to have it done. You can't take too many pictures!

Not trying to thread jack but I havn't heard many bad things about the aussie in the snow as long as you're aware of how the truck reacts and dont drive like a dumbass.I'm going to order mine monday and we have a lot of snow here so i'll write up a review of my thoughts.

You know this is for a rear diff though right?

I know. I have a good understanding what it took to install an Aussie on the rear diff from doing it. I'm interested in how much more there is to do inside the diff with a Zip over and Aussie. I'm confident I could do an Aussie in the front once I got the diff removed but I don't want an auto up there based on how an auto behaves. I also would like to see tons of picture on how you wired the compressor, routed the tubing, secured the tubing, wire the switches and any specific gear setup that may be required.

You do have to adjust your driving habits. For instance, my company parking lot is completely covered with that crappy layer of ice the develops after several freeze / thaw cycles followed by temps in the teens. If I hit the gas too hard both wheels instantly break free and the rear end can slide laterally in either direction depending on slope. I make sure that I'm in 4WD whenever there's significant snow / slush / poor traction conditions. It's the worst when at a dead stop and starting up. If already in motion then it's not as much lateral movement. The problem seems to go away completely when 4WD is engaged. I would not put an Aussie locker in the rear of a vehicle that was 2WD. That would be dangerous. I think that most of the people on this site that are serious enough about off roading to put an aussie locker would be capable enough drivers to still drive safely. The issue would be if someone didn't know it was there and encountered those low traction situations. They might see significant oversteer.

I daily drove trucks with rear aussie lockers for 12 years. Not sure what everyone is talking about as far as changing driving habits. Install, drive, enjoy. What's the big deal?? Was great in the snow. TRACTION..

Subscribed. Very interested to know about the Zip install and the results. I have an ARB in a 40, but wide open in my 3rd Gen Runner. Curious if the Zip will be just as good a quality as the ARB.

Yukon make some good stuff from what I hear. Hope this works out well...I'm subscribed for results/impressions. Would really like to lock the rear on my 98.

2 of the of the guys i wheel with are running zips front/rear. both in jeeps... but, they seem to work great. no issues.

Only thing I don't like about it: the safety tabs for the ring gear bolts cannot be reused

So I'm currently sick. It may be a few days before this install happens...

Alright, I got a little done in the time I had.
I drained the rear diff, undid the e-brake as well as the rear brake lines. I then un screwed the 8 nuts that hold the axel shafts in and took them out. I attempted to disconnect the drive shaft, but failed. Those things are tight. Even tried a cheater bar. I'll try again tomorrow. Hopefully I'll have everything ready to go by Monday night.

I'm using my crappy camera because I don't care about it haha
