Just got back from my first trip in my 05 V8 Sport:

1. Heavy load - 3 people, back full of luggage, cargo carrier in hitch with cargo.

2. AC on

3. 65-70 MPH

4. 95% highway

5. 93 Octane


21.8 MPG.... Checked out again coming home except I got 20 MPG running HARD (70-80 MPH + WOT passes) with 87 octane.....

Not bad!!! In my book.....

Wake up... Wake up... man... you were waving your arms in the air and hollering Captain Cave Man! Okay... now tell me about your dream again.

You must started out on the access ramp and gave yourself about 10 minutes to reach the indicated 70-80 to achieve 21.8mpg. Makes sense. Either that or you own two homes and were traveling down hill both directions.

Wet tank 184lb (diminishing with consumption)
3 people at say 150.00 = 450lb

And you achieved optimal mpg... hmm.

I'd say 95% of this community who has the V8 does not get that kind of gas mileage - although... perhaps that 93 octane did something for you.
 
Im not calling anyone a liar here, as my status upon this board is about as new as it gets but I just returned from a trip up to houston and back (about 500 miles round trip) and in that trip I also added another 100 or so by visiting some friends just outside of houston and i showed a wonderful 16.2 with 87 octane at speeds of roughly 70-85 with the A/C and no one in the car.

True im only about 1100 miles in on the odometer but I find it hard to believe that I could gain roughly another 6mpg no matter how many miles the car breaks in.

I have used both 93 octane and 93 octane with 108 octane booster and neither made a difference really in mileage..except that the 93 with 108 made things worse as the car really liked it, and i liked how the car liked it. Hence, i pushed on her a little bit more than I probably should have.

I wouldnt expect anything more than about 17-18 once the car is fully broken in given the stats on a 05 SE 4wd such as mine.
 
Amazing what the VVTI adds to the engine (and a 60 MPH tail wind)... Just kidding...

I really think the VVTI added a lot to the V8 and probably improved the gas mileage. Hey, if you can get that kind of mileage, more power to ya!
 
Are you sure you don't have a v6 under that hood?

Sounds possible.

When my 03 V8 was stock I would consistently get 20mpg calculated by hand, I still currently average 16-17. I run my tires at 34psi and I'm not the slowest driver around. I do mostly highway though. I normally do between 75-80 pending on traffic. I have a 4WD.

The big trick is to maintain momentum with the 4Runner and not speed up and slow down on the highway. Just flwo with the hills as well. When my GF drives the 4Runner it gets around 14 now. On a large vehicle with a large engine driving habits plays a significant role in gas mileage.

BTW the 05 V8 LTD 4WD is 4550lbs GVWR is 6000 or so, so that includes like 1400lbs of cargo.

EDIT: I always only use Chevron premium, unless it is not availible.

maybe i need to check the tire pressures....although I would hope that the dealer would have checked that before handing it over to me, but im sure that they didnt, so that could be a contributing factor.

I squeezed a few more MPG out of my V-6 when I put the Dunlops at 40PSI cold. They were at 32 stock. Seemed a bit low at 32 psi. I am used to the firmer ride at 40 psi. Its not terrible, it may take a day or two to get used to it.

I would not trust the dealer with that. I got mine at 48 PSI!!

Also keep in mind that mileage improves after a few K miles.

Driving habit is very important and where you drive. If you do a lot of stop start and city driving dont expect miracles, it is a lot of weight to get up to speed.
 
I get 19 mpg on the highway (unloaded, except for my muscular body at 210 lbs :) ) with 34 lbs of air in tires and cruisin at 65 mph. That's with 20K miles on mine and I only run 87 octane. I thought it was determined that the VVTi didn't add anything to mpg? I have found that wind resistance can change your mileage by 2-3 mpg and temps can do the same. Normally I average on my vehicle 17.5 combined and 19.5 on the computer. I love that computer mpg :D
 
Mine was at 52 PSI when I got mine from the dealer. I guess that is standard for shipping, but they are suppose to lower it when the truck gets to the dealer.
 
well as soon as mine cool down some tonight ill take a look at them and see. They have looked a bit low from visual but I know that can be deceptive.

Best I ever got with an empty 03 V8 and just me in the truck was 20.68 MPG. To get that I filled up at a station at the top of an exit ramp, eased up to speed, set the cruise at 65 and drove for 190 miles (all fairly flat highway miles with cruise control on the whole time). When I got where I was going I pulled up to a station at the top of the ramp, filled up again and calculated the mileage. The trip computer (which I reset when I filled up the first time) reported a reading of 24 MPG. The vehicle was well broken in at the time of the trip (18K miles) so I doubt that would have been a contributing factor.

1 tire was 30psi...3 others were 31....

all now set to 34...i can see how that might have made a slight difference.

Take it up to 40 psi and drive it for a full tank, see the results!
