06 4 runner auto dimming mirror w/compass install

Hello, just came from the dealer and parts wont sell me a auto dimming mirror with compass for my 4 runner because it is a factory install. They had several other 06 vehicles you could purchase for but not the 4 runner. Is this because the wiring for the mirror is not there unless installed at the factory? Can I purchase a 03 to 05 mirror and get it installed? Just curious if anyone has done it.

I installed it successfully on my 2003 Sport. I think reason parts won't sell you one is because some Toyota models are prewired for it and the 4Runner is not one of them. The mirror you are buying form Toyota does not come with the complete wiring harness. You can buy any generic Gentex mirror and install it from scratch. I put one into my 2005. Bought it off Ebay for less than $100 and it was Gentex brand, the same brand I believe Toyota puts into them at the factory. I tucked the wire into the headliner and down the beam where the handle is on the drivers side. I found the schematics for the wiring on this forum. Do a search and you will see it. After I found the correct wire the whole installation only took about 45 minutes at most. Works great and no problems yet.

I just recently did this and found the directions posted by "woody" and the electrical diagram (which helps locate the wire you need to tap in to) posted by "goodtimes"
