2011 4R vs. 2012 Sequoia or?

So, the sig other has decided I should trade the 11 LE for a 12 LE Sequoia. I travel for work some (drive) and put some miles on, but get reimbursed so the gas mileage difference alone is not a big deal.

I've never driven a Sequoia, but have owned a Tundra before, and a 2005 GX 470 before the '11 LE I have now.

Is there a difference in fit and finish of the 4R vs the Seq, or is the quality similar?

My other options are a 2011 GX, worried about the steering vibration, or maybe a 2009 or so Land Crusher.

I've been pretty happy with the LE, but have put lots of miles on already. It was also the same color combo as my last GX, and maybe I'm also a little tried of silver/black...

Your input is appreciated.

Yes and no.

Do you need a bigger vehicle?

Ah, good question. I also travel for shooting competitions (member of the US Nat F-Class team) and on those trips, yes, my 4R is jammed.

Also, I recently moved into a lake community and am working on buying a boat, so will be towing it around some. Likely will be an inboard ski boat, so not big, but don't want any issues...

Might also consider renting a travel trailer now and then...

Get the LC or the Sequoia if your going to tow anything big and you need more space.

I recently test-drove both a Sequoia and a CPO Land Cruiser, so I think can give you some perspective. Both the Sequoia or the LC sound like they'd work for you, but the GX is basically a dressed-up 4runner, so there'd not be much benefit other than the V8.

The fit and finish of the Sequoia is on par with the 4runner, whereas the LC is on a whole other level. The LC also drives much smoother, handles better, has better visibility, and is more maneuverable than the Sequoia. However, the LC is not really that much larger than the 4runner and GX, so if space is the top priority, I'd go with the Sequoia. Not sure if the 3rd row is important, but the Sequoia is the only one that has a truly functional 3rd row suitable for adults. It also has a little more versatility because the 3rd row folds into the floor vs the LC's, which folds up to the side and takes up a ton of cargo space. The Sequoia also has the roll-down rear window, which can be nice for hauling long objects.

It really all comes down to personal needs and taste. Go test-drive and see what speaks to you.....I actually ended up liking my 4runner that much more.
The 4runner isn't perfect, but neither is the Land Cruiser or Sequoia. I went away pretty impressed at what the 4runner offers for the money. The LC was nice, but not worth the extra $25 IMO. Good luck

Why did she 'decided'? Is she going to be driving the vehicle more than you or having an equal split of time behind the wheel? What were/are her concerns and reasons why you should get the Sequoia?

You let us know YOUR reason why you might want it (more room, boat, etc), but not hers, and she is the one making the call :)

I loved the look (and v8) of the last gen of the Sequoia. I hunted for a year for a low mile used one that I wanted but there were NONE around. From talking to dealers a lot of the previous gen owners did not like the redesign look of the new one so were hanging onto their current ones.

^^ This.

Me, I don't see the value in a LC, for the serious extra coin. And those 3rd row seats look like arse.

I like Sequoias, wish I had the slightest need for one.

the Sequoia is a fricken tank! I would have said get it in the past because it is alot of truck for the money but they are damn near the cost of a landcruiser now so I will say get the land cruiser. To me the LC is PIMP status lol

We have a Seadoo Speedster Jet Boat with the supercharged engine, very fun if not offering a lot of seats. I haven't towed it with my 4Runner yet, but the weight on these is so small that even your 4Runner will have no trouble towing it. Your 4Runner could tow a larger boat and still be fine.

...

I believe that statement is incorrect… with 4th gen of 4Runners it was true, but since now GX has totally different power plant and trany: V8 with 6 speed in GX vs. V6 with 5 speed in 4runner.... GX is totally deferent truck, you no longer can compare them…

To OP: if you can afford it, I would look into GX or LC.

Land cruiser. I never buy Toyotas without the j vin as well. V6 in the 4r is weak!

Thanks for espousing opinion as fact... seems to happen a lot here. That said, the "4r" engine is more than sufficient, and it's efficient. Only weakness is shift logic that's obviously geared towards fuel efficiency, but a foot pressing on the pedal can overcome that pretty easily.

I actually prefer driving my Sequoia over the 4Runner. Mostly b/c it is more comfortable, V8 power and more space for kids. Also the turning radius on the Sequoia is much better than 4R which my wife likes when trying to park it. I really like the newer body style and has everything you possibly need for storage and the fold down 3rd row is great. If you have the money though I would go for the LC just b/c it's a LC.

Sequoia Platinum and a Trail

I bought a Sequoia Platinum in August. I traded in m y03 Suburban. I have had an opportunity to take a trip in it and will tell you it is a way better Highway Traveler than the 4Runner. The platinum has cruise control with laser and you can set the speed and there are 3 different distances to follow behind the vehicle in front of you. The power is unreal, the ride quality is nice with the air ride suspension, you can set it to 3 different levels, comfort, medium and Sport. A/C Seats, auto 3row fold down, auto rear door. Much more room for your ****. Both rigs have a place for me, the Sequoia is a better cruiser because of the power and th ride, my TE is excellent for hunting, off road and has a good look. I bought the Blizzard Pearl and would reccomend getting either the Limited or the Platinum instead of the SR5.

Man, the 5th gen haters are out in force today. I don't see how my statement is incorrect. A different engine and tranny do not make it a "totally different truck". A 150 is a 150. Same chassis and roughly the same dimensions inside and out. If the OP is looking for more space, the GX isn't the right choice.

That's a part of human communication - having an opinion. That's why you're here. You're entertained. And you're doing the same thing.

The v6 is underpowered and buzzy in this power laden v8 crowd. Huge deficit. The pricing reflects it as we'll.

Lc>seq>>4r

I can do that too. Me>You, see, easy :)

In response to the power comments...

I'm coming from an 05 Grand Cherokee with the 5.7 Hemi engine, and while around town normal driving the V6 in the 4Runner is slower more relaxed, I finally had need to punch it to pass last night and the 4Runner transformed into a beast. The engine sounded great, and it pulled hard.

I had seen the 0-60's that had the 5th gen pretty much dead even with the WKII Grand Cherokee with Hemi and now I understand why...
