2011 4R vs. 2012 Sequoia or?

Man, the 5th gen haters are out in force today. ....

Why to get so emotional…? Why try to put expressive spin on someone else comments..? I like 5th generation (although in Trail package only) and obviously I like 4Runners in general (had 2nd , 3rd and now 4th generation), but when you change the engine from V6 to V8, change trany from 5 to 6 speed, change every single body panels of the vehicles then I would call it a different truck…
I was just replying to OP with my recommendation, which is obviously based on my knowledge and my experience without injecting “personal” feelings as you took it..
Cheers!

They are the same truck... same frame, same dimensions, same vehicle. The GX keeps a V8 to differentiate itself from the 4Runner, the V8 sourced from the Toyota Tundra which has switch to standard 5.7. This was done because it needed to be more "premium" than 4Runner but couldn't use the 5.7 due to the LX570.

KCcarguy was correct in stating that if the main issue was space, the GX is not going to provide more space than a 4Runner. More luxury... yes, Slightly more engine at a cost (mpg, minimal gains)... yes, more space no.

If you need space and want a V8 consider a Sequoia...

Not getting emotional. I just think it's ridiculous to say that a 4th gen GX is a dressed-up 4runner, but the 5th gen is not. They share the same platform. Pure and simple. Same wheelbase, same suspension, etc. Body panels do not change this. If you've ever been in the two, the similarities are obvious. Same interior layout, same seats, same dimensions.

I've go some news for you....this happens all over the auto industry. Did you know the Escalade is actually a dressed-up Tahoe with a 6.2L engine? Yeah, it's true! It's the same for the Lincoln Navigator/ Ford Expedition!

You are one of those guys who hates on the 5th gen because it has a 270hp V6 and not a 245hp V8. I understand the V8 has it's advantages, but it also has disadvantages vs. the new V6. You have no OBJECTIVE reasons for your comments. Other than a moderate advantage in towing capacity, I challenge you to find an advantage of GX over a 4runner for the OPs needs.

I've driven the GX at length, as well as the 4R for many many miles.
Even though they share the same bones, plumbing and other equipment, I absolutely despised the GX while loved the 4R. So, they are different even though they are the same! Gee, maybe I should have been a mediator! Comes down to character, I guess, the 4R having much more of it.

@OP. Go to toyota.com, select the "SUV" Section, and pick "compare vehicles". You can table up all three in a detailed feature listing.

I loved the look (and v8) of the last gen of the Sequoia. I hunted for a year for a low mile used one that I wanted but there were NONE around. From talking to dealers a lot of the previous gen owners did not like the redesign look of the new one so were hanging onto their current ones.

^^^ Agreed. I have a 3rd Gen T4R and I was seriously considering the Sequoia and then they went and redesigned it and it became huge and ugly (imo). So I waited and when the 5th Gen came out it was perfect.
I think I would go for the LC. Seems like a much nicer truck and would serve your purposes.

Thanks for all the responses!

Thanks for all the responses guys. I went and drove both a 2012 Sequoia (used with 10k mile) and a 2008 Land Crusher (31k). The Sequoia sure seemed big, and while a nice ride, may be just a bit to cushy or maybe soft going down the road for my taste.

Granted the LC is a bit older but it did drive more like what I prefer. Nice overall vehicle. Dont gain much space with it, if any, is the negative. Do gain the towing capability, for sure.

Dealer and I could not make a deal as they would not make what I consider even a fair offer on my 2011 LE.

Finally, one poster said it was great to drive the others and it made him appreciate the 4R more, have to agree. Still a damn nice rig, and I enjoyed the drive home, simple as that.

Thanks again!

I just retired my 2001 Sequoia with 500,000km for a 2012 TE. The Sequoia took very good care of me for little more than the cost of maintanence, and like other posts have suggested...it is a BEAST! That said, the TE took some getting used to, but in the end I am starting to appreciate the tight ride, suspension and the improved fuel consumption. As far as interior volume is concerned, there is no comparing the the two. I miss the "beast" but love the ride of the new TE. Either way, you are getting an awesome vehicle.

Sure you can compare them… just like a lot of people would compare apples to oranges… I just do not see the point of it…

I see the point of it. They are both midsize, body-on-frame SUVs, with very similar offroading capabilities. The GX has more luxury, more power, but also more weight. The 4Runner has less luxury, less, power, but also less weight to haul around. And the 4Runner also doesn't have that stupid barn door.

470 version of GX is not heavier than the 5th gen 4R

That's a part of human communication - having an opinion. That's why you're here. You're entertained. And you're doing the same thing.

The v6 is underpowered and buzzy in this power laden v8 crowd. Huge deficit. The pricing reflects it as we'll.

Lc>seq>>4r

Didn't they already ban you once from this forum? Why are you back here? You've stated your unsubstantiated claims about the "buzzy V6's" many times before. No one bought it then, and guess what? Nothing's changed. I currently drive a V8 Land Cruiser, and while I do love the rig, I would have no problems driving any of the V6 4Runners. No "buzziness" coming from either the 3.4L's and 4.0's that I've owned. The new ones are ultra-smooth as well and are more than adequate off-road. I believe the new Trail Editions are the best 4Runners produced to-date.

You've never had anything useful to say. Go troll elsewhere.

That last Sequioa really was incredible, and it's my dad's Sequoia (250K+ Miles) that encouraged me to get a T4R. He has yet to have an item that needed fixing, just regular maintenance.

Had a 2004 Sequioa. To this day, I regret getting rid of that vehicle. To me, it was the perfect size. The new Sequoias are too big imo.

It was perfectly sized, just enough more cargo space than this 4Runner to make it very useful, and that V8 was surprisingly efficient.

I actually wouldn't mind a new Sequoia. The 1st gens were still pretty big. It's not like you get one to wheel (although I've seen a couple nice ones). They're family haulers with good ground clearance. Would be a sweet roadtrip machine. New Sequoias are IFS/IRS, but again, they're not crawlers and independent suspension works just fine for dirt roads and mild trails. And the 6-speed 5.7 V8 is nice as well.

Here is a pretty nice build.

We test drove the Sequoia Platinum and the LC. The Sequoia is huge (but I have an Excursion so not an issue). We have 5 kids, a 9,000lb camper, tractors, atvs, you name it, we tow and haul it, that's why we looked. It's nice, and very expensive, and ultimately for me NOT a Land Cruiser, so I was unwilling to fork out about 70k for second (to me) best. I couldn't get a LC equipped how I wanted anywhere, so I ended up keeping the Excursion for heavy towing and one day when a LC with no sunroof miraculously enters the area I will probably upgrade. :biggrin2:
