After scouring the web for cargo bike racks, I found a couple of fellow DIYers who used wood planks secured to the floor with their bike mounts on top.
I have thought about the Kuat Sherpa tilting bike rack but it costs too much and I know the first time I stop at a gas station, a seat or shock would get stolen. I also thought about mounting them on top, well thats just too much of a hassle. Besides that, one day I would forget and drive into the garage...
So I had a Rocky Mount bike mount that went into my Tacoma bed rail system. I was initially gonna get a bed rail & place it between the two anchors as I did with the metal bar below but; the bed rails are too flimsy and you have to buy an entire set :shocked: !
I went to my local Lowes and purchased 6' metal sq tubing, 3' smaller metal sq tubing, lock & flat washers, M8 bolt (forgot length), metal primer and flat black paint. I already had a 1/4 ratchet, 10 mm socket, grinder w/cutting wheel and heavy duty drill bits.
I cut the bigger sq tubing to 50", placed the tubing inside next to the anchor bolts and marked the tubing where the bolts would go. Drilled the holes just enough the bolts would go through, placed the bolt into the hole and covered with the socket. marked around the socket and used a larger drill bit and drilled through the TOP ONLY, just enough so the bolt head and socket can fit inside the tubing. The smaller tubing was cut to 1 3/4 (2 pieces), it will act as a spacer between the larger tubing and the anchor ring. Once I mocked everything up in place, I put the bike in and placed the Rocky mount onto the forks. Spaced out enough room for my handle bars and made sure the hatch would not be affected by any part of my bike. Marked the sides of the Rocky mount bike rack and took all the tubing out and drilled just the top for placement of the Rocky mount. The Rocky mount hardware came with these bigger goldish nuts, they didn't fit inside the tubing so I cut a tad off so I could slide them in without any problems. Once all holes were drilled, I cleaned off the metal with acetone and proceeded to prime it and paint it. Allow enough time to dry, I have a couple of fingerprints in the paint haha. After it sorta dried, use a magnet and slide the Rocky mount nuts into the bar and attach the Rocky mount to the bar. Then place it back in the cargo area and installed the hardware to the anchor points as follows: Bolt head, lock washer, tubing, washer, smaller tubing, washer, anchor point, small oem washer on back side of anchor point and then it all attaches to the car. Once all that was finished, my cargo liner was pushed down just a bit so I used a razor and trimmed around the bar and under it for a nice clean look. I installed the bike on the mount and took some quick pics for you all to see, enjoy!
