2020 Remote start

I have it through the Toyota Connect App on my phone. 2020 Limited. It's a cute toy but no really useful in the Bay Area. Not too cold in the wither and occasionally hot in the summer.

But it is good for making sure you run it every week, during our shelter in place.

Is there any explanation for why the engine turns OFF when you unlock/open the door?

Surely the ONLY reason you remote start is to... ready the cabin to start driving. So why turn off only to have to "immediately" turn back on? I assume there's some reasoning behind this... valid or not :p

There is no real reason. Both of my Jeep Rubicons have remote start. You walk up to them, put hand on the door handle and it unlocks, open the door, and... walla!... the engine stays running. However, you have to press the start button again to bring the rest of the Jeep to life. Toyota could've done the same thing but they do dumb stuff when it comes to those nice little extras.

There is absolutely no valid reason. Its so stupid.

So far all of the Limiteds have remote starts and I have not seen a Pro with remote start. I think it might be how they order the Pro's.

I've been reading some of the literature, and it SOUNDS like remote start, from the key fob, will only work so long as Remote Connect service is active? I've got the 1yr trial, zero intention of paying for it... so I lose remote start functionality? What the hell?

It is my understanding from research online and talking to dealers only the T4R's with the premium sound system have factory remote start for the 2020 model year.

Mine sucks with the remote. Works only if I'm standing two feet away. Might have a bad key fob. I will be testing my other fob today since I'm going to get my 10K service tomorrow.

The other thing that sucks is it turns off when you open the door. Never had any other vehicle do that.

Not true. I have a push button start, but no "premium sound system" or JBLs in mine, and I have remote start. I only use the key fob, not the app, and it seems to work at a good enough distance to not need an app anyway. I believe it can be added by the dealer on any of the trims with push button start.

I have found a factory module on the Toyota parts website. A local dealer service dept. told me it would not work on my 2020 ORP, it would need the ECM swapped. DidnÂ’t make sense to me as 2019Â’s had it and some 2020Â’s have it. I have trouble believing they would use a different ECM for each trim package. I think theyÂ’re just trying to push the aftermarket Viper remote start at $600-$700.

Mine was added before I took delivery of the vehicle, so I'm assuming it's just a simple dealer programmed option.

On the 2020 4Runner, the only models with remote start from the factory are the Limited and Pro models (coincidentally JBL equipped). The dealer add-on remote start (with which yours apparently has been equipped) is not the same as the factory remote start system that we ORP owners are disappointed we didn't get.

Your Venture has Premium Sound as that is the only option for that model. You may not know that because it doesn't sound premium. The Premium Sound system is different than the JBL system that the Limited and Pros come with that actually sounds premium.

I would love for you to tell me I am wrong and that there was some factory/dealer programmable feature that could be activated because I would schedule a dealer visit tomorrow.

Looks like every trim except for the base SR5 has "Premium Audio" listed on the Toyota site. It sounds good enough to me, but definitely no JBL system.

And like everything else, I'm sure the dealer adding remote start(and removing some extra crap) to close the deal was a big part of it being a quick and easy add-on. It works the exact same as the "factory remote start", so it makes no difference to me. I was just sharing my personal experience to show that it can and has been done by a dealer. I'm sure they'll want to charge something outrageous to do the same thing AFTER you already bought the truck, but that's pretty typical.

Yeah, the SR5 non-Premium and Off-Road non-Premium, the Premium Audio is an option. Like you said, everything else, other than Limited, Night Shade and Pro, get the Premium Audio. I may go the add-on route at some point. It's just this topic has been confused enough because different people have said "all push-button starts come with remote start", "'20 Pros don't have it", "they all work with the app", etc. In the end, it only comes factory on the '20 models with the JBL, dual climate, etc. and the rest of us are only left with the add-on option.

RunTheJoules, I forgot to ask. When you said key fob, is it the factory fob or a second fob you are using to remote start?

The remote start on the Limited/Pro is tied to the Remote Connect app. You can start the 4Runner on your phone or your remote fob.

The caveat is that when your Remote Connect trial ends, you'll lose the remote start function even on the key fob.

Had the exact same scenario happen on my 18 IS350. I renewed my subscription and I regained remote start on the fob and phone.

And by Remote Connect app you mean the Toyota app that has a screen with a Start button in the middle, right? It seems crazy to me that if this is tied to a subscription that they don't put the $10 module or whatever in all of them and offer it to everyone.
