231mm Tundra Brake Swap COMPLETE!

Two Questions?

First off did yall have to replace the brake lines? I was talking to this guy at the Toyota Dealership and he mentioned that I would probably need to replace the brake lines/fittings because they are different from the stock 4runners. True or Not True?

Also. I have 16x8 PRocomp rims with -4.5in of back spacing. This mod should work for this rim? It is the exact same size rim as the stock, just with more back spacing on them. I just wanna make sure before I commit here.

I did not replace the brake lines at all. They connected without any problem!

This I'm not positive about as I didn't have to fit these on standard wheels. I was using FJ Cruiser rims which are 17". I've heard of some being able to make it fit, and others not so I don't know what information is good. I do know, however, the 199mm Tundra brakes (the smaller set) do work with the regular wheels without having to shave anything.

I did some measurements to try to figure out the answer to this.

Check a few posts after that for some pics I took of the clearance on my stock 16" 5-spoke wheels.

I plan on doing this too down the road. I also will have FJ wheels so I am not worried about that.

but wont do brakes till I need to. spending enough at the moment with OME, Tires since the jump to 17's and CBI front bumper stuff in the works.

I plan on it cause with the front and eventually rear bumper and sliders I will have a heaveier rig. so this will be a nice upgrade.

I am installing 890's with 1.5" daystar spacers. I measured the inside of my wheel (Procomp98 series) today and it actually is about a 1/4" bigger than the stock rims it looks, so Im hoping that it works! I'll share pics tomorrow...

I don't believe the 231mm brakes will fit without a little bit of grinding, but you can grab the 199mm tundra brakes and those will fit. There are a ton of threads out there asking that exact same question and have the answers on them too. Do a quick search and you should be able to find that answer!

Stock 16" 5 Spoke work just fine with 231 mm calipers. I drove mine around with the stockers - and will be using them for winter rubber too...

Go for it! I like the way mine turned out, tho i did more then just the calipers- also really like the way LINY did his wheels..

Other than that, I think it's just the grinding of the dust shroud to clear the larger caliper.

It's a shame, I would have done this mod myself but unfortunately the 01 and 02 versions need a computer to bleed the brakes.

The stock 96-98's came with the 3 spoke - not the 5 star rims. You need to use the 199mm calipers if you don't want to do any grinding. The 199's are good enough for daily driving - ie. not towing & stock wheels/tires.

So the dealership, and 2 Toyota tech's (from 2 different dealerships) told me lies?

It's due to the VSC/TRAC/ABS - does yours have all the bells and whistles?

Sorry, but it does need to be done by computer / Toyota Tech to ensure it's done properly.

i have a 02, all the bells and whistles, i bolted them up, had my buddy on the pedal and bled them like you normally would. abs works as well as its known to and i can lock them up when ever i want.

this is pretty much str8 forward.
If you have 16" wheels, you can do this with no issues.
Stealerships dont know what they are talking about when it comes to modifications for the good while swapping parts between cars.

I did the 199mm after contiuously warping the small rotors.
Went to junk yard. Found a wrecked Sequoia and bought the calipers loaded for less than $100!!!

The only aggravating thing was making sure you cut back that thin metal sheet around the caliper. Other than that, my truck stops on a DIME!
Like driving a 18 wheeler. No more vibrations or nothing.

Good to know - I guess if you are willing to save a few bucks by doing the brakes yourself than 'giver ****'.

Toyota tells their customers that it requires a Certified Technician to get it done right on the 01-02 4Runners which have VSC/ABS/TRAC. When a friend, club member and a Certified Toyota Tech completed my swap, said he fought with the bleed for a couple hours just to get it tight enough.

But hey, they're your brakes, not mine.
