255/75/17 installed! Pics:-)

I've had a good bit of road time on my 255/75/17's so I thought I'd give an update. Gas mileage is most definitely up, I can't tell exactly how much as I got mine right as the stations were switching from winter gas to summer gas which I hear can effect gas mileage. I'd say nearly 1mpg increase as long as I don't drive with a lead foot. When the foot gets heavy, it's about the same as before.

I have one complaint, and only one, about the 255/75/17's. I was told the spare fits, and indeed it does. However, with the oversized spare, a standard receiver hitch will not fit into the hitch on the vehicle, it hits the tire. I did some towing this past weekend and had to drop the spare tire and chunck it in the back just to tow. Not a big deal as I don't tow often, but kind of a hassle when you're in a rush. I'm not sure if all hitches are the same, I'm gonna search for one that'll fit. If not, I'll end up trying to modify one and drill new holes so I don't have to pull the spare when I tow. Anyone else have this issue?

ive never had that problem & dont know what ur towing but maybe try pushing & holding the spare forward while cranking it up,as long as it doesnt hit the bar its fine. some space maybe gained, also if its not off by much u can try deflating the spare just a bit. ive never used this but if ur not towing alot of weight, one of these or something similar may work, Hitch Extender For 2" Trailer Hitch Receiver 7" Brophy Hitch Accessories HE06

I lack at least an inch, possibly more. I'm thinking maybe it's a different class receiver hitch or something, because a standard hitch pin wouldn't work as well. The most I tow is a 16 foot trailer loaded down with a pair of four-wheelers and gear, not sure on the total weight but I try to keep the weight around the axles.

Hmm, looks like this is a known issue.

EDIT: I contacted the local dealer, no one knew a thing about it, all they would do is suggest finding an aftermarket. I've taken a chop saw to a standard hitch and made it fit, problem solved! Thanks chaz!

Well not-so-good-news on the tire front. My GY Wrangler SA’s had to go. The GYSA’s would not hold balance. After two were replaced and all of the tires rotated on the rims to require the least amount of balance weight, runout checked etc they wouldn’t hold balance. I could drive a few weeks and the shaking would creep back in. When rechecked they were indeed out of balance.

The shop manager and friend through family said in his 20+ year career he has on very rare occasion seen tire/rim combos where the tire would migrate or turn on the rim. That is what was happening on mine we speculated.

I asked about scuffing the bead seats and he was adamant that we shouldn’t. I don’t quite understand why but… I do know that I was done screwing around. I have a 3 year old 4runner that I wasn’t enjoying at all. He also said I could put on anything (within reason) and they’d work something out. They worked it out and I’m riding smooth, quiet and wimpy on some Toyo’s. I was sorely disappointed that in the Atlanta market the 255/75/17 is not popular to the point he couldn’t come anywhere near the price he could for the 265/70/17’s. Given I was looking for the cheapest way out and I am truly Ric’s favorite kind of 4Runner owner, the Web-Wheeler, I settled for the mild tread. If the pricing was similar I absolutely would’ve have run the 255/75/17 A/T’s. The dealer’s distributor was happy to work a great deal on these so I had to take it. Great road tire so far but I can tell I’m going to cut a sidewall even with my mild off-roading. It’s truly a Michelin CT replacement tire. The GYSA was an incredibly well constructed, tough tire for a ‘P’ tire.

If I could have a ‘total do-over’, knowing what I know now, I would want the GYSA’s to not slip! I liked the tire. Obviously that wasn’t in the cards for me so I should’ve sprung for the Revo 2s.

I don’t want to scare anyone off of the 255/75/17 size for a second. IMHO tall sidewalls rock and the 255/75 is a great match for stock or mildly lifted 4runner, especially the V6’s. I can tell the sidewall on the Toyo’s is softer than GYSA yet the ride, at speed, is very similar just quieter. The ride at low speeds (below 25-30mph) is better with the Toyos. I can’t help but wondering if following in tenguns footsteps (235/80/17) wouldn’t be cool too.

Oh well, live and learn. It's just as important to post our failures as it our successes Separate Toyo post...

255/80/16??

Hi CJ, didn't see many people trying this tire size with a 16" wheel. I think it would be a 255/80/16. I have 16's stock an like the look, want to keep them. Im not sure if you can get the GYSA's in this size but was thinking about trying. Do you think the sidewall height would be too much? I assume fitment would be the same, no rub issues as long as no spacers. I have almost the same setup as you with FJC springs and shocks plus a .5 inch spacer on the front. Let me know what you think.

Also, is it mandatory to run the 255? Or, would a 265 fit similarly? UCA issues? If so, am I still ok with a 265/75/16?

Im not sure how you guys used your 4runners when you had these tire too. Ever fully flex it out (compress)? No rubbing then either?

Old thread, but in case anybody wanted to see how my new 255/75/17 Goodyear Wrangler Duratracs look on basically a stock suspension. I have FJ coils in the front which level things out with the Shrockworks bumper. I think i get away with this a little easier than if you had stock front bumper. No rubbing at all front or rear, fully turned, articulating, or anything else so far.

Can someone with 255s measure, as much as possible, the actual tread width of the tire? Published specs include section width, but I am interested in tread width.

My 265 Wildpeaks are about 9-9.25" tread width (10.6 on 7.5 section width).
