3RZ Runners Only

Any other ideas you guys would like to share on getting more power out of the 3rz?? I just got quoted 2700.00 on re-gearing my truck ...

I'm gonna risk being yelled at, but..

The 3rz works well in a lightweight truck in more or less stock configuration. I'm very happy with mine but I work hard to resist adding weight to the truck. And we are lucky, we have the lightest and simplest 3rd gens with slightly better fuel economy.

If you can't live with it in stock configuration your gonna have to pay the $$$$. Or sell it and buy a V6.

But that's just my opinion. Many will disagree.

3rd gen 4Runners are all pretty similar when it comes to suspension setups, armor, body mods, etc. But us 3RZ guys have a unique set of problems that are inherent to our engine. I think this thread could be a good place for some of the unique info that we need. Things like gearing for a specific tire size with our venerable 4 cylinder, Engine mod dos and do-nots, maintenance concerns specific to our powerplant, etc. And maybe just a little group within a group of guys and gals that have a little less rotating mass than the masses.

Built diffs for the rear are easy to find in the PNW any 8" Toyota rear is a direct bolt in, mine was 300 with Yukon 4.88s installed in great shape. Then you drop the front yourself, buy some gears and have them installed and you should be around 5-700 on the front, so 800 to 1K.

I've heard 2700 from people getting all brand new with arb lockers front and rear, so I'd at least get more quotes.

I agree with freshseabass. This is what I did. I'm no mechanic and was able install the rear (3rd member) by myself and the front clamshell with the help of my 20 yr old son. Simple and straight forward.

I highly recommend ECGS! Best part about going this was is you get a 5 year warranty and you have the option to add a locker. Which I also highly recommend.

I think you've got great point. I still plan to build a supercharger into the next engine but that's a long ways down the road. For now what I do is keep the armor to what I NEED instead of what looks cool. Regearing is money better spent. The engine gadgets go much better on an engine that is fresh and built to that purpose.

It's easy to get the 3rz to outperform a stock 5vz. TRD SC, Turbo, headers, high flow exhaust, CAI. It will still be lighter than the V6 with more room in the engine bay.

Then there's the more hard core stuff like cam's, pistons, valves...etc
These engines can max out at around 900hp.

Some of those drag engines make a LOT more than 900. LC builds an engine for one of the scion drag cars that is around 1850hp. Granted it gets rebuilt every few runs but still impressive.

Started digging into the front to do the oil pump. The 3rz breaks down amazingly easily. I think it took me about 45 minutes to get to the crank where I had to order a tool to do the crank bolt properly.

Bastards got me for 65 bucks....yuck! And vatozone and orielly looked at me like I had a dick on my forehead when I asked about the tool. Then the response was...it's for a Ford right?

Ive had to do mine now for awhile, didn't realize a special tool was gonna be needed neither, good to know and to know who has one....mmmm. You do rental programs? Lol

Honestly since there's a nasty rumor about timing chains at 350-400k I would suggest you just buy one.

I read about the timing chain thing many moons ago on ttora but I figure that will be one of those driveway jobs too. Lce sells an HD chain which would be a nice upgrade while you're in there.

One thing I suspect though is about 400 - 500k that there's going to be some valve work involved so whenever the timing chain happens it might be just time for a rebuild or fresh engine.

So what exactly is a "3rd member"?? Because to be honest I really am no mechanic and it seems a little overwhelming to think about taking this on my self .. Even with a mechanically inclined friend. It is my DD. I do have access though to a lift I can use and would consider it if it's pretty straight forward.

Sharing a beautiful 3RZ specimen. Yes it's mine.

Is the 3RZ an interference engine?

Sadly yes. Toyota was smart though and tried to create a chain that never needs replacing. While this would probably work for a Ford 4cyl a yota can just keep running so we need to watch for the symptoms of a timing chain.

UPDATE:

Arrived last week with some new Tails and making some preparations to install as long as everything checks out with bushing/sleeve spacing, re-greasing heims, etc.

These bad boys are BEEFY :reddance:

Pretty stoked about this, I just want to get to driving it around and notice the difference. Eventually I will be upgrading to FK Heim Joints as well as slightly nicer zerk fittings. Stay tuned on here! Will update during/after install. :zoom:
