Well here goes, just turned 50 and fully embracing the mid life crisis. LOL. Needed a change from my daily life and daily driver (2007 Nissan Frontier Crew) went into the dealership fully intending to buy a Tacoma and fell in love with the 4Runner. after going home and researching and finding this forum, I found that this may actually be a starting point for many adventures. I have a 16 year old daughter that is very adventurous. We checked out the Overland clubs and decided that we are going to try to drive to and thru all of the lower 48 (and maybe 49) even if it takes 10 years! I am truly excited about this! Has anybody ever done this in a 4runner? any advise?

Happy 50th! Mine was 13 years ago. ;)

Advice: figure out your own family "rules" for visiting a state. That might sound silly, but with some people it makes a difference. Ours is that you have to actually do something in a state before counting it. That might include stopping for fuel, eating, shopping, visiting a museum, historical site or scenic spots.

We do *not* include simply driving through a state without stopping (16 miles of New Hampshire Interstate between Mass and Maine, for example), nor do we include landing at an airport and never leaving the terminal.

My brother includes both of the above, and some folks even include flying over state. My daughter doesn't count a state unless she pees in it...

Good luck on your quest. I've been to all 50 except Hawaii, Delaware, Louisiana, and Arizona. We visited 24 in 2016.

good advice! thanks Steve! we are not going to count them unless we drive and stop for some attraction.
 
I did 26 states and 8100 miles in 4 weeks in April 2015. The intent was to get to the final 3 states I had never seen in my lifetime (ND, SD, Mt), with stops at places I had been unable to see on previous trips. Link to the trip is in my sig line below. [MENTION=66316]1engineer[/MENTION] also likes to sticky a current long trip thread at the top of page 1 until it is completed as long as the people making the trip are willing to document what they are doing. I highly recommend you describe and document your itinerary for any trips you plan. Probably 30% of the places I visited were recommendations by the members here as they read where I was going on a daily basis. No telling how many really cool places I might have missed without that input. Good luck on your journeys. :rockon:

Time to get you some Louisiana. Maybe not the best for overlanding, but a truly unique place.

I may have been there when I was a little squirt. Literally. My parents spent their first anniversary December 27, 1952 in New Orleans, traveling from Biloxi. I was born September 1953. :redface:
 
I finished the 50 a few years ago when I drove from WV to Ft. Kent Maine. Spent several nights in Maine, a night in New Hampshire and a picnic lunch in Vermont. I also have drove my personal vehicle through 48 states and have 31 states covered in a 5th gen 4Runner lol.

I'm 76 years old - Been to all 50.

Obviously not in my 4Runner; But in many, many vehicles over the years.

The wife and I will probably do a drive from here (NV) to Charlotte, NC this summer; Go up and down the Atlantic Coast for a few weeks and then back to Nevada taking a different route.
