She does a really bad job in that video. out right dogging the runner. in the paper copy the review was pretty pointless, you could not come away with anything, like real world testing wise. but thats what I notice with that rag, there is no real use data. I am glad I did not have to pay to read it, as I would not pay CR any money for anything.

Everything she complains about is why I would buy it. Stiff ride, truck handling, high step to get in, straight leg driving position, and ability to do off road. I can drive over a curb in my 4Runner, but I'd be scared to in a Ford Escape. If I had to sacrifice guts for some more expensive interior materials, I'd pass.

Reminds me of this old CR article I have in one of my Car books. In 1972 they tested 9 “sports sedans” and rated the BMW 2002tii dead last and a Peugeot first. Their complaints about the BMW were low ground clearance, engine noise at full throttle and fuel economy (of course).
Anyone who knows anything about sports sedans can see how ridiculous that is. Like judging the best car on how well it floats. If it were up to CR the Toyota Prius would be the only vehicle available to the general public.

I'm not a fan of putting much stock in reports written by people who are paid for that sort of thing. I find it is much more useful to read reviews written by someone who owns the product. It may seem odd, but I specifically seek out negative input so I can determine what people don't like about the product. After reading the negative comments I can decide if the user is a "cry baby" or if they raise valid points that may be a concern to me as well. There's enough information on the internet for consumers to make informed and balanced decisions before plunking down our hard earned cash. Bottom line, like this group, I don't care what CR says, I love my T4R.

Not for anything but, anyone seriously looking at a 4runner, knows what the 4runner is about, what it is built to do, and is willing to pay top dollar for a functional SUV. If i wanted a AWD lazyboy to put groceries in the back, and drive my kids to soccer, I would get something else.

No, say what you want about CR but they don't really have a bias based on what you are saying. They don't even take advertisements and if you notice when you look at products in Lowe's or Home Depot that have been rated a "Best Buy" it always says "...by a leading consumer research magazine" because CR won't let them use their name for advertisement.
I do still believe that CR has a bias toward Honda in general but it isn't because Honda pays them for it.

LOL! This comment cracked me up. I suddenly imagined all these reviewers with serious, straight-faced expressions slowly driving cars down boat ramps into a lake and furiously taking notes on how far they went before they sank.
But like some folks mentioned up above, CR has a certain target demographic for their car reviews. Purpose-oriented car buyers (such as someone looking for a real sports car or an off-road vehicle) don't read CR for reviews. They go places like these forums and read the purpose-oriented magazines. CR's car reviews are mostly targeted at the older crowed (who generally want comfort above all else) or other folks who really don't know a whole lot about cars and honestly don't really care.
Try not to take it too seriously when CR rates your favorite vehicle very low.

Incorrect. I worked on a car brand and we paid a king's ransom to use the CR name. Same with Polk, JD Power, Car&Driver, etc.
Not calling you a liar, but I'd have to see it. I have never seen CR name used on any advertisements. I'm sure Lowe's and Home Depot could afford to pay CR for their name. Now Consumers Digest I have seen used but not CR.

I'm so over CR.
Ive read CR for years. Many times I'd jot down their "best buys" only to find the model discontinued or not available on the West coast. Other times their choice would leave me scratching my head, especially when it came to food items, wine, etc. When I bought my house a few years ago, i bought the top rated washer, dryer, refer. 2 out of three of those items were disappointing or failed in some way.
The final straw was when my dad showed me the 4runner review last year...
It complained about the abysmal gas mileage. Meanwhile the glowing review of the Highlander touted it's "class-leading mileage"...the difference was 1 freakin' MPG!!!

Hmmm. Slight shaking in the body, akward handling, not very main road friendly... Where exactly do these come into play when your broke down on the side of the road? The lady seems to forget one of the biggest draws to 4Runners is it's reliability. There are more 10+ year old 4Runners, as well as other Toyota vehicles on the road today, thannew, or fairly new, American made counterparts. I have two friends that have both gone through 1 Cherokee because of mechanical issues in the past 4 years. So, while you Cherokee lovers are broke down on the side of the road just remember that us sore ass, motion sickness 4Runner drivers are making due just fine as we pass you by on the highway.

CR clearly does bad SUV reviews. I thought that meaybe they just don't like 4Runner, and I checked review for Ford Escape 2008 which I had for 3 years. Same thing - they didn't do a good job, the review does not reflect the vehicle at all. I think that lady should review minivans.
