87 4 Runner Build

I posted these in another thread but I figured they should also be in my build thread. This is the second time I have gotten body damage from wheeling. I am more proud of this one because it wasn't caused by my stupidity and inexperience. This was caused by going in-between two trees that were a little bit close together.
I liked the idea of having an onboard air compressor, and for filling up just my tires it was fine. But If I had to fill up mine and someone else's rig, it would take a long time with both of us having big tires. Even with just my tires the air compressor would take about 5 minutes per tire unless I had a full tank of air. So, the air compressor had to go. I found a local dude on craigslist who had what I wanted, I had what he wanted... so here is the outcome:
Just for kicks, I deflated my tire and it took about 30 seconds to air it back up

Nice! That is the exact option I am looking at.
In the first half hour on the trail there was already damage! I am pretty new to 4wheeling. I never knew how to weld, fabricate, build engines, etc until I bought this 4runner. So I made a bad mistake today and learned a lesson! You would think that this is common sense but sometimes when you're having a good time and thinking about the trails, common sense doesn't always flow as it should. Anyways, I was following a bit too close to my friend and lost traction. I slid right into the back of his 4runner and pretty much destroyed the tailgate on his 4runner and shattered his rear window. I smashed the front of my 4runner pretty good and bent my hood beyond repair. Now I need to replace my buddies tailgate and fix my core support and replace my hood.Oh well, all in a day's fun
Oh man, I did a similar thing to a buddy's '85 4Runner... I felt horrible. His was clean. Like, clean enough to eat off the valve cover clean. Meanwhile, my hacked up '83 that I had just picked was far from pretty, really, a miracle it still ran at all! Anyways, I had parked behind his rig at his place, tossed it in gear, set the parking brake and hopped out. I made it to his front door, knocked on it, and as he came out, he was able to watch my truck roll forward about 10' down the slope and ram his ride. I felt horrible!

Don't feel too bad, Royisme--my sister popped the clutch and thumped my car...with me between the two! I was hooking up jumper cables, and she had a brain fart and launched at me--luckily the angle of the bumpers allowed my legs to fit without getting crushed. D'oh!

Yeah, but I didn't think she'd be in that big of a hurry for a Wii and a beat up old Honda Civic!
Whew! Now that does suck! Considering it was about 12 years ago now, I'm over it lol, pretty sure he is as well.. I'll find out if he ever rear ends my 2000 lol!
So with all this talk about me getting rid of my 4runner and swapping it out for a nicer and more comfortable 3rd gen, I decided it was time to button up my 4runner and see how I can make it a little quieter and more comfortable. After getting the top rolled down and doors put back on I decided that I liked it better without the so called "luxury".

I'm sorry for ever considering getting rid of you. You have been a loyal and faithful 4runner. You have taken care of me when we were miles and miles from civilization. You have held your ground and made it up obstacles when a non-believer (wife) didn't think you would be able to do it. You have put up with my abuse day in and day out without ever asking for anything in return. For this, I apologize. I will never think about leaving you for another 4runner ever again!

For those of you who don't know, today is National Love Your 4Runner Day! I I spend so much time taking this 4runner off road and making a mess out of her. I'm always finding ways to damage her and lately not really doing a lot to take care of her. I figured that since I was so harsh on her with the talk of cheating and all, it was time to give her a little bit of a rub down and show my baby that I still loved her!
First thing first... A bath!!
She cleans up really well!!
I also got rid of the hitch and the other emblems from the back of the runner:
Along with a bath was a little bit of some TLC on the CB antenna mount:
That's all for now! I have some polish for the aluminum wheels but I will take care of that when I get an adapter for my drill.

Don't have much trust in your spray painting, huh? LOL! I've never seen anyone cover half the vehicle to paint a 3" part. Sorry--had to rib you a bit! Are the bolts stripped to where you couldn't remove it? As always, the truck DOES look great, SVD!
I don't remember where I "acquired" that paper. But it works well for masking for painting and it is flame resistant so it works well for use as a welding blanket.
I put RTV around the bolt holes on the inside and around the body where the antenna goes through so I didn't want to remove anything. And it was kinda windy and didn't want over spray on the soft top
I seriously love your 4Runner SV! Reading your thread has my wife stressing about how thoroughly I'm searching the local classifieds and having friends keep an eye out for all but abandoned solid axle Toyota's. I'm hoping I can stumble onto an '84 that blew a head gasket or something and pick it up for a song. Since I'm not concerned about how thrashed it is... I plan to have it pretty spartan, I'm hoping I can pick one up for cheap.
At the same time I stumbled on this 1986 Toyota MR2 Reduced even more which I find myself wanting for a summer ride... I've seen some with 5VZ's and 1UR's stuffed in them. Either one takes some work to make fit, but for the price, I'm tempted...

Thanks roy! I have a lot of fun with my 4runner. It's obviously fun driving and wheeling it, but it's still a lot of fun building it.
Keep an eye out for a 4runner, you'll find one. You can find em once in a while with a bad motor that you can pick up for under a grand. Then go and do your 5vz or 7mge/mgte swap in it. Eventually I'll do a motor swap in my 4runner because the more I get used to the whoppin' 140hp my motor has, the weaker it feels.
