87 4 Runner Build

Sweet! I know it's early but where are you as far as deciding between leafs or links? Can't wait to see your build. I know it's gonna be badass!

I'm going to use the TG 3" kit. I'm pretty happy with my TG 4" rear kit so I'm confident that I'll be happy with their front kit as well. I was happy with the kit in bob's 4runner for the two times I took it out. I know I can do it a little cheaper if I make my own kit and use ruf's but I don't have too much time. I need to have this thing done within 30 days. That may seem like a lot of time but I need to balance this between a heavy work schedule too.

Yup! I think hi-steer may be my solution. I told myself that I won't do anything radical to this runner till I get out of the army and get through school. So much for that idea! I talked with my wife about it for an hour and she was pretty solid on her opinion of me doing my solid axle swap. I kinda have to listen to her seeing as every time I want to spend money on the runner she cringes and asks "how much this time".

The cutting will probably start this weekend!!!

I have a new, still in the package high-steer kit that I don't think im going to use.
im not sure about shipping, or how much you can get one for, but maybe we can work a deal?

Is there anyone here that can disagree?

I won't disagree, but can I play devils advocate?

An SAS takes you well away from stock reliability. Maybe not such a huge factor in a trail truck, but it is a factor. Once you hack off all the factory parts, things get fidgety.

An SAS is a lot of money. You already know what you need so I won't lay it out, but it's not cheap, even if you assemble it yourself. If you use a kit you're probably looking at well over $2000 once you factor it all in.

An SAS takes time. I'm not saying you can't do it in thirty days, but I'm saying I couldn't :).

The last time you had this truck, the IFS was working for you. Yeah, I know you just broke a steering part, but you said yourself it was a junk part. Get some Moog or OEM Toyota stuff on there and it probably won't happen again. An SAS is a huge investment of time and money to replace a system that you really haven't had any trouble with, you know? You just got your truck back. I vote you go enjoy it for a summer, and if you're still hankering for a solid axle once the snows hit, you'll have all winter to do it in.

Don't come in here and start talking logic. For the last year there really hasn't been a lot of logic in ANY of my threads with all the buying and selling... why start now?

Besides, I know that doing the sas won't solve all my problems. It will however fit my needs and will hold a lot up a TON better than IFS and I won't need alignments every 3 months. Since I have been wheeling with the IFS I have replaced a number of ball joints, tre's and even cracked a lift bracket. Bottom line, 35's and IFS is NOT a good combo for safe wheeling. The tre snapping was just the straw that broke the camels back. To be honest, after the tre snapping in half it kind of woke me up. How do I know that a weak ifs component isn't going to break on the freeway on my way home from a wheeling trip? If that happened at even 40 mph it could have been deadly. I don't trust it anymore and it's time for it to go. Plus, this is the ONLY time the wife tells me to spend a large amount of money in my toys! I gotta listen to her!

An SAS? An Solid Axle Swap?

"Bill ate a apple and tossed the core in an trashcan."

:caked:

He traded his core for a smaller core... Sammy! He had good reasons too and I couldn't disagree with him.

i have to say that i couldn't agree with you more! if my wife gave me the "green light" to dump that kind of money into my rig, the last thing i would do is argue with her. i'd actually pull the plastic out of my wallet and get on the horn and order parts before she changed her mind.:D god knows i spent a few nights on the couch after parts kept showing up after my swap was done. it got kinda hard to explain all the charges to inchworm, longfield, front range, etc.

soooooo...is that ifs hacked off the front of your rig yet?!?!:behindsofa:

Well then, get to it! :pop2:

Buy 30 splines and a front locker now while you have the green light..... and some 37s..

what?
he'll still be using mostly stock parts, and the parts that aren't stock will be hugely upgraded over the OE stuff. a well done solid axle swap is much better than the stock IFS. all around, and including reliability.
assuming he gets the hanger and shackle mounts in the correct spot, there shouldn't be any issue.

Damn you and your logic!!

The SAS is on hold for a while. The more and more I thought about it the more it sounded foolish. I have about a year till I get out of the Army and start school. I should be saving up instead of spending money on hobbies.

Even though I don't trust the IFS, it has worked for me in the past. I ordered moog parts today which was a bit of an investment for all the steering related components but hopefully it was worth it.

Don't blame your new-found rational state on me, I was just trying to sound smart and shit. Go SAS your truck, ffs.

SV, you logged in yesterday. I know you saw this. Get in here and tell us you still have this truck, or I'm going to punch every Girl Scout in Colorado in the neck.

Punch away! I never liked those commie *****es and their nasty little cookies. Actually... Their cookies are pretty good.
