96 4Runner Lower Fan Shroud

Hey ya'll,

First post here and looking forward to getting involved in the T4R community!

My question pertains to the lower fan shroud (No.2 Fan Shroud in the FSM) that clips into the main fan shroud. I noticed that this lower shroud is missing on my 96 5VZ-FE. What purpose does this lower shroud serve and should I look into re-installing one or not worry about it?

I have attached a pic with the piece in question circled in red.

That piece allows you to remove the radiator shroud without removing the fan/fan clutch. You unclip it from the bottom, unbolt the main fan shroud, and the main fan shroud comes right out the top after removing the upper radiator hose.

I'm guessing it would also gain you some cooling efficiency because it is more or less a ducted fan, and a portion of your "duct" is missing.

It's not a mission critical component, but if you come across one on craigslist, I'd pick it up.

If mine was missing, I'd replace it. They are not very expensive.
I've had a dealer service department destroy this part and of course not tell me. Since I discovered it about 6 months later, I just bought another one.

Don't even worry about it. I haven't had mine on almost since I've had my 4runner and my engine stays at a constant 185 degrees. That piece of plastic doesn't help a lot if any. Don't sweat it brother.

Mine had to come off when installing the 1" body lift. Didn't notice any difference in cooling because of it.

I figured the piece wasn't too important, which your answers have confirmed, so I think I will do as Wooden Payload suggested and pick the shroud up if I find a used one or if one of the local wrecking yards has one. Thanks for the replies everyone.
