96-98 Owners. Who has done the 99+ MAF conversion?

As the title says, who has converted the 96-98 Maf to the newer version?

I bought the MAF from COB off his 2000 parts truck(thanks again man!) and installed it last night. For the mount, i picked up this:

It fits perfectly into the stock airbox and intake tube.

The problem that i am having is that my 4Runner is now running lean according to my A/F gauge.

So, has anyone here done the swap and have you noticing if you are running lean or not?

Here is the writeup on the conversion
97 4runner to 99+ 4runner airbox/MAF conversion

EDIT: Yes i have cleaned the maf

Did you pull the efi fuse? Message vital22re on yotatech. I know he did this on his truck.

Yep EFI fuse was pulled. I just pulled the MAF and tested it with the FSM procedure and it was fine. Now i'm about 95% sure that the sensor mount is just too big of a diameter and the MAF is calibrated for a smaller diameter pipe.

I should just pony up and get the MAF calibrator from URD but i think i may try to fab a smaller mount. If not, does anyone with a 99+ that upgraded to a CAI still have their stock airbox and intake tube? If you do, PM me a price

I can't help you with your question, but I'm just wondering what is the advantage of converting to the 99+ MAF?

The 99+ MAF is much less restrictive. For now, i am going to switch back to the 97 MAF until i get this figured out so i will snap a picture of the differences when i pull it out.

The gains would probably be noticeable only if you are boosted.

Ahh, I see. I guess that makes sense that you're running lean then - you probably have more airflow with the less restrictive 99 MAF. I can't remember if you've done your fuel upgrades for your SC yet or not, but if not, maybe the 7th injector is needed to run the 99 MAF with an older SC'd 3rd gen??

Yep. But i'm not just running the MAF housing, I also have the sensor which is calibrated for the less restrictive housing.

also, from the link he posted. The 99+ MAF sensors themselves are cheaper to replace then the earlier models when they eventually go out.

Has anyone been UNABLE to swap to the newer MAF? I have not been successful converting mine. It's been a while since I screwed around with it but this thread caught my eye.

Yes, I pinned it right (all five attempts)
Yes, I cleaned it
Yes, I tried a different MAF and tested them to specs
Yes, I'm using the stock airbox with deckplate mod and aftermarket pipe to TB

I can't remember what codes(s) I was getting. Pretty sure it was a lean condition.

I know this thread is old, but my first thought when I saw the comparison picture of the stock MAF versus the new setup was that there's no air straightener before the MAF. Should probably add one. MAF sensors can act funny sometimes without it.

What's the diameter of the old MAF housing and the new one?
