96 Hard Shift Issup Resolved (for free!)

My 96 has had a hard shift for about a year and a half. I thought I had damaged my transmission by towing a 4500 lb boat regularly, but that wasn't the case. About a year and a half ago with the advice of this forum I tightened my throttle, cruise control, and Tra sissies kick down cables. I didn't notice the Hard Shift at first but it dawned on me 2 days ago that that might be causing my transmission to be prone to hold a low gear longer than normal. I was shifting out of 2nd at about 2900 rpm with a hard clunk. Yesterday I adjusted the cable back to where it originally was and no hard shift! The cable wasn't over tightened or anything, there was a small amount of slack but my tranny just didn't like it. I hope this may help someone else with a similar issue. Check your transmission kick down cable on the early 3rd gens.

THanks for posting. I wonder if the later 3rd gen models have a kickdown cable that can be adjusted? I will check tomorrow in the light. thanks for the tip

'01-'02 have no kick-down or cruise cable at all, since the throttle is electronically controlled. There's only one cable for the throttle, and that only opens the throttle plate halfway at max pull.
