99+ Center Console install thread

You can put them in the dash to the left of the steering wheel if you have any blanks. Since I have a diff lock switch I'll have to add length to one or two of my connectors.

Right now I have them in the plastic surround by the shifters.

FYI, I completed this mod on the weekend (pics to come) and did not require any modifications to relocate my switches to the left dash slots. It is TIGHT, and I had to really stretch all the wires, especially the parking brake wire as they are on the same harness...but it worked!

I started out doing a custom panel in the 99 center console, where that "useless hole" is, but decided against it for the time being. If I ever have too many switches and not enough room, I will install some in this spot, it's really not hard to do. What frustrated me and caused me to give up on the custom panel was getting it to stay strong enough to push a button into...just need more time to think and come up with a better fastening plan. (glue is not the answer)

In my opinion, the biggest challenge is correctly relocating the ebrake and console mount brackets...I still haven't completed this aspect, but the console is very sturdy so I will forgo the bracket for now.

Tips to future members attempting this mod, MOCK UP THE CONSOLE AND EBRAKE 100% BEFORE DRILLING NEW MOUNTS.

I pulled the panel surrounding the instrument cluster, by removing four bolts, and ran the rr window switch wire closer the the steering colunum. Doing so allowed just enough length to place the switch in the location described by CJ80 without requiring additional connectors/extensions to the wire harness.

Additionally.........if you intent on doing the overhead console mod; make certain you purchase the overhead console and it's mirror assembly together.

Check the OHC mod write-up contained within 4Runner.org website. On page 5/6 take notice of the mirror base; it differed from my 97 mirror and needed to complete the mod. When I purchased the OHC, I failed realize I needed the mirror that came with the console until I had everthing rewired and ready to reinstall. My stock 97 mirror did not work nor could be modded to work, therefore I had to hunt one down. :redbrick:

Hope this helps...........Regard 8sm

My 97 mirror worked for that, weird that yours didn't.

4Runner console into Hilux

I plan to install the 4Runner center console and handbrake lever into my 2004 Hilux pickup. I have all parts, including the brackets for the console and handbrake lever.
What I need is the exact measurement of the distance between the rear handbrake bolt hole and the console bracket bolt holes. It is something around 80 millimeters, I think. But what is it exact? Also I need the correct angle of the floor pan, because the Hilux floorpan is a litte bit different. Should be something around 5 to 10 degrees (or 185 to 190 degrees).
Can anyone with a 1997 to 2002 4Runner measure it for me, please?
Hope someone can help me.
Thanks a lot!

95 4runner has a different console.

INPUT:
I installed a 2002 console into my 97 without making any single hole on the floor. Everything matched up fine. The only cutting I did was to remove some small plastic tabs underneath the console.
The rear window switch and ETC switch got enough wires to mount into the dash openings hear the tilt lever

Same here, I installed 2001 console into my 1998. Mounted right up, no modification needed. The emergency brake mounted in existing floor location

Relocating switches...

I know this is an old thread, and...

I really appreciate all of the time and energy that you all put into helping others with repairs and mods!

I didn't really want to move my switches when changing to the newer center console, so I didn't.

I made a little panel from a piece of aluminum. I cut out the switch holes with my scroll saw (was a pain!), cut out the little hole/space/dirt collector spot on the newer console, and then used pop rivets to hold it there.

There is one empty space, and the middle one is for my antenna... since I rarely listen to the radio I mostly leave it down, and I can use the switch to put it up when I want.

Far from perfect, and at least my switches are still right there at my fingertips.

Steve

Fantastic! I'm going to be installing a 99+ center console assembly in my '97 SR5 this weekend. I ordered custom switches from OTRATTW to replace/relocate my rear window and ECT switches from the stock 96-98 center console.

I got a full center console from Atomic6 to match my blue/grey cloth interior. It comes with the 99+ ebrake handle, as well as the mounting bracket. I'm hoping to set a speed record with the install :) Will post pictures when complete!

Let us know how it went, with photos. Want to do same to my 96

The installation is direct fit without drilling the body or anything. Has to trim a small plastic fin at the bottom of the 99+ console. Other than that everything goes right in.

You can also relocate the window and ETC switch onto dashboard by the left knee area without even stretching the wires. You however, have to remove the wiring from the main wire-harness and route it to the new location.

I found a local 2000 being parted out. I'm going to go get the drive shaft for myself and he told me the interior is decent. Would anyone be interested in a console/cupholder? If so, I think I can pick it up and ship it. It may be $50-$75 or something like that, I'll check to be sure. I asked him to send me pictures so I'll also post them when I get them. I'm getting the DS tomorrow so I can pick this up also.

Around noon or so, I'm picking up a drive shaft, so let me know if anyone wants this.

After doing this swap myself I would hightly recommend to anybody to just go ahead and buy the hand brake and bracket that comes with the center console. Makes it a slam dunk swap with no issues. I paid 15 bucks for the brake and bracket. 50 bucks for the console.

So,could you take just the black 99-02 center portion without the armrest and make it fit into the 96-98 armrest ??? I know the 99-02 box looks taller. Just wondering if it’s possible.
