AC Comparison , Nissan....

Just got back from spending a few weeks in Maui surfing with my kids. Rental car was an Altima. Wow! The difference in volume from Nissan to Toyota is night & day. The Toyota engineer who designed the fan for Toyata products should be forced to retire in Yuma Az with only a Toyota AC fan unit to cool down.

Currently for Toyota products we own a TE Runner, Tundra Crew Max and also have a 2015 AWD Limited Rav ( we had a 2009 Rav Limited AWD with the V6 miss that car had some heuvos) all these cars have Max AC outputs equal to asthmatic with a hernia blowing thru a straw. They cool the car down eventually but was impressed with how much air that POS Altima kicked out. Most of last week was mid 90's and humid with limited trade winds in Lahaina. Jump in fire that AC on and tons of cool air quickly.

Toyota needs to needs to step up.

Try an older 4Runner then. I didn't think the 5th Gen's was that bad. I still think the older ones have more oomph.

Toyota is known for their great reliability. They know it and clearly use it to their advantage.

They lack in many other aspects. Technology, A/C, ergonomics, cheap interior quality, etc... you name it.

It's such a shame because if they had the interior equivalent to their competition they would crush everything and would make their customers happy. Now they just make us frustrated.


You won't realize how crappy the features are and how cheap the interior is until you go in a car of a similar year. But well, at least we don't have to worry about our vehicle breaking down...

I've noticed our passenger cars seem to have strong ACs, the CUVs slightly weaker, and the trucks and SUVS seem to slightly weaker still (in terms of air being moved.) I have wondered why that is..

What's your point? Do you have a better compressor or blower you are going to install? Doing a redesign on duct work?

On a side note... do you think it'd be possible to get a new motor unit and crack the old blower casing open and swap them out? I've been debating this for a bit on the 4th gen.

I really like my TE am am very glad I got it, but the weak A/C is an irration. I lived in Japan for a while and they do get warm inthe summer so they should know. Maybe they are used to the heat in the public bath houses and think it's ok.

Simple observation from someone who has been drinking the Toyota tea for awhile, interesting to see how 2 competing Japanese brands compare over their AC methodology . Nissan prefers perky nipples quickly and Toyota does not.

It's like banging a woman who only does missionary and swapping her out for a girl who does back flips in bed , both get you off one just does it better.

They both work but can't help but wonder why Toyota uses the Harbor Freight blowers when for a few bucks more better tech exists. Nothing more don't over think this post.

Just attach a leaf blower to the a/c intake, and call it a supercharged 5th gen.

I did notice when you close half the vents, the pressure in the systems seems to blow air out of all the connections on the ducting under the dash and in the center console. So I don't think you can do a lot to make it better or blow harder without redesigning the whole system.

Sure you could but you need to have the compressor provide enough cold or else the fan will just blow cool air.

Maybe you should take our 2000 Astro Van, you can run the A/C on low.

Only big reason I can think of the Altima would cool down faster is that it has a smaller volume of area to cool vs a 4runner with a larger volume interior. Even last week when it was 117 in Phoenix my 4runner cooled down quickly.

Toyota knows exactly what they are doing, keeping their price point where it should be.

Headed to Yuma this weekend from the beach area in So Cal to shoot doves, I will enjoy some serious heat there.

If I pull the cabin filter the Crew Max and Runner blow some decent air but put the filter back in in throttles the volume down.

I live in Phoenix. 110-115 degrees... I don't have any complaints with my TE. I've been in vehicles with much worse air, and been in vehicles with much better air.

What I find to more of a factor is the body fat of the person in the vehicle. Fat people love to blast the A/C at full all the time. So part of me sees this like a fat person complaining that the airplane seats are far too small when obviously they need two seats.

Not saying the OP is a fatty. But there is definitely a correlation here. I have well documented research.

I completely agree with that and this is exactly my point.

The interior and technology in a brand new $30-33k Hyundai Sonata/Tucson is as good as a brand new $45-50k Lexus IS.

If you want a good interior with Toyota (so Lexus) it's gonna be $10-15k more that the competition.

I would like to see a 4runner with as much technology features as a Cherokee or Grand Cherokee. Because you don't go offroading with a Lexus and if you want the Land Cruiser you pay $80k

Volume of air from Toyota to Nissan , plain and simple. Nissan puts out more volume from their blower it seems

My kids have single digit body fat since the are hard into martial arts, they think the Toyota blower is junk.

Don't get your fan boi panties in a wad, it was a simple back to back manufacture comparison as to how two brands approach cooling.

I'm headed to Yuma this weekend with my kids to shoot doves, it's the boys job to jump into Runner or Crew Max to run the AC so the rest of us have a somewhat cool car.

Didn't want to bring this up as I thought it was just me.. Seems that Toyota A/C's have definitely decreased in performance lately.. Maybe its the envirocrapically friendly refrigerants used these days, as I remember our older gen land cruiser and camry (both middle east vehicles) had painfully cold air on max!! Ohh you could probably make popsicles on those crown victoria vents too. The TE's A/C, on the other hand, is definitely not one of its strong points for me...
Will see how she handles things once that sea-can finds its way back to shore. Otherwise, might look into some sort of an 'upgrade' if that's even possible.

I also live in Phoenix. When the T4R is in the shade it's not too bad. But as soon as you go to the supermarket or somewhere with no shade, it's literally an oven and takes forever to feel the A/C (compared to a 2014 Grand Cherokee, a 2010 lexus, and a 2007 hyundai santa fe at least).

Also I would've loved ventilated seats as an option (I'm fine paying extra) for the TEP. Too bad it comes only with the limited. We could really use that in AZ
