aFe, TRD or other

No, good answers - it's what I was looking for. I don't really understand the "bling" argument since you can't see the intake, at least not like you would a nice watch. But if it sounds better, I understand - it's why I went with JWT on the Z. That was a noticeable difference though - very loud and distinct. I've not seen that with other true CAI designs on other vehicles and wondered if that was true for the T4R. . If that's the case though, cool - I understand.

Exhaust I have an easier time understanding because the sound is almost always better sounding and more distinct. Plus you often get some decent weight savings from aftermarket setups.

Bofa, the only reason I personally got into the "fray" in one of these CAI threads is that while the thread started out fine, just like this one, it rapidly turned into a misinformation dump as people started quoting claims of improved efficiency, improved gas milage, CAI's would grow hair, etc. This thread is good as it claims no "amazing" claims. The other threads...not so good. That is one reason why this forum is a great place for factual information-there are some very intelligent people here that try to keep the misinformation under control. Antman, Harper, Jesse, Blacksunshyne, Ducmonsta and a host of others. Qjake, Phillyd2, Philsey, JTraskell and everyone I can't remember right now.

BTW I understand the reason why they buy an aftermarket CAI. It looks cool and sounds different. Those are as good of reasons as any.

I bought a TRD air filter for the Stock Box

If there really insn't a noticable difference with an entirely new intake, this was the option I went with. Replace the stock filter with a cleanable TRD. After my lift, bigger tires, and Gobi Roof rack with lights, it also did absolutely nothing but allow it to breath a little better and can be cleaned and re-used. $60 BUCKS. It doesnt make a sound. Seems like a reasonable option.

Bofa, as I've already mentioned there is little to no HP gains, nor fuel gains. Unless you want to see some "bling" under the hood, go buy a drop in K&N or TRD filter into your OEM intake, through a sticker on top of it and call it a day because after all........that's the same performance I'm getting $400 later. Save yourself $360 dollars and learn from our "mistakes" or our careless concerns about spending the money (I personally liked the way it looked more then I cared about the performance gains).

HTH

I would be interested to see if there is a difference at all in intake air temp. Anyone have a scanguage 2 and a bit of time to swap stock and cai and log it? I would bet there is little to no change based on watching my intake air temps be within a few degrees of ambient temp.

Sorry to chime in so late here- Guess I missed this one?

Here is my still-born Intake Mod, and a link to the thread http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/92013-antmans-thread.html#post806560 (more pics too).

I like it, but I got beat up a little for it. I've done something like this on just about every vehicle I've owned- since the 90's. Always seems to add a little oomph, but mostly it just plain sounds great! Call me an induction-noise -junky, if you will.

Until someone PROVES me wrong, I say it still flows more air than the original, uncut box. Damn all you smart people, I'm a hardhead!!!

Flowtests, or zip it!:bluejump:

I agree the temp won't change Brock, we already draw air from a cold zone outside the engine bay. Though the air flow is less restricted there isn't anything to cool it down.

Hmm makes me wonder if Antman can wire up a second AC blower...kinda like an inter-cooler

I would like to Thank all of the posters for their honesty commenting about gaining NO horsepower or fuel mileage using a CAI. The only reason that I was considering buying a CAI was to increase both of the mentioned above. You guys saved me a couple of hundred $. Now, I guess that I should look into a URD supercharger system.

considering a lot of "cold air intakes" have an aluminum pipe running from the airbox to the intake plenum i would think they might actually be higher than ambient temp after a few good WOT runs down the street/track. think of that aluminum as a big heat sync sucking up all the engine bay heat and holding it.

i know from my experience intakes do hold heat and cars run slower when heat soaked, i used to put bags of ice on my intake between passes at the track. it helped my times stay consistant, if i didnt i could lose a full second on my ET at the end of the night compared to the begining because of heat soak. i did a write up on CAI's but last forum i posted it on (Audi forum) i was bashed for it because they all thought CAI was snake oil.

Just curious - why, after all the reading and suggestions on this forum, do some still want to spend a couple hundred on an intake with very little benefit, if any? Not being a smartass, I really am curious and feel like I'm missing some details.

I've had a few intakes in the past with mild HP gains. Some cars really do benefit. On my last car though I did it because I loved the WOT roar (JWT popcharger on 350Z:boink: Sounded great but the air flow was already optimized from the factory). But I've yet to find a compelling reason on the T4R. I'm actually hoping I'm missing something that will make me think differently. :moping:

Because all the cool kids are doing it.

Yup, I bought a K&N because I like the induction sound, I *hoped* it might give more horsepower, and EXTENZE wasn't on sale that week...so I bought the filter to give me the size and confidence I need. AND it instantly gave me 23lbs of lean muscle mass.
