Another Bilstein 5100 set-up question(s)

That is a bit of lead time. Did you end up ordering them from 4Wheel? I do recall reading in one of the many other Bilstein 5100 threads that it was taking some time to get these shocks since end of winter - start of spring. I ordered mine last fall and got them within days.

Hope you enjoy them and have a good alignment guy.

Yeah, the fronts are on back order. Everything else is in stock. I order them through 4wheelparts who will also be doing the install, unless there is someone in the Denver Metro area that can help a guy out! ;)

Another quick question. How are the rear 1.5" spacers attached, if at all? Do they just sit back there, or are they bolted in somehow?

Warpath---you dont need the part 196499. You can get the ones off the Toytec website that are a different part number and you wont experience that kind of wait. I did the same thing originally (ordered the same front shocks) and waited 5 weeks to have the vendor tell me that were on backorder indefinitely. I called Toytec and they told me the shock they had would work fine and there was no insane leadtime.

Warpath-

I can echo what Catskills says. I ordered the "full set" of Bilstein 5100s from Toytec about 4 months ago. They were delivered in about 3 or 4 days, and I've been running them on my 2014 TE ever since (fronts set at 1.75") with absolutely no problems.

I questioned the Toytec guys closely about the part numbers issue that many have mentioned in this thread and others. They confirmed that the setup they're selling uses the adjustable 5100s that Bilstein designed for the 4th gen 4Runners, but they said they've been selling and installing that setup for 5th gens for years now with no negative issues whatsoever. I guess my desire for instant gratification got the best of me because I didn't feel like waiting "indefinitely" for another vendor to finally stock the newer version. As I said before, I've experience zero problems while using these shocks.

On a quick side note, I installed 2 stacked 10mm OME trim spacers (also bought from Toytec) on each rear coil, and I think the setup turned out perfect---for me, at least---when paired with the 5100s set at 1.75" up front. The vehicle has a modest overall lift; it achieved a leveling effect while still maintaining just a little factory rake (even while fully loaded down with gear and people in back); absolutely no nose dive; rides great.

I highly recommend this setup for those in my same boat. The 4Runner is my daily driver. I also do a pretty good amount of off-road activity all year round, but it's not hardcore rock crawling. Mostly crossing rough terrain and mud in order to get to/from hunting and fishing locations.

So I asked 4 Wheel Parts to set my Bilsteins at the 1.75" height to level out the rake. When I measured afterwards I got 2.5" I figured they just set it at that height so that it would be "level" like I requested. But I looked and it looks like they are not even at the maximum height and possibly could go higher! I wouldn't think there would be any "settling" period because it is just the shocks and not springs. Am I wrong? Or do I get more lift because the trail edition sits higher to begin with from the factory?

It looks like there is a ring above and below the cup the spring sits on, indicating it could go higher? How did I end up with 2.5" if it is the center ring? Isn't that supposed to be 1.75"?

I know with the 4th gens you always get more lift in the front that what it states the lift is. with a 1/2 spacer the front lift was closer to an inch. Don't know if the same applies to the 5th gens.

I'm going to do Bilstein 5100 all around with 2.5" front and Toytec 2" coils in rear this Fri. Will post pics afterwards. FYI Toytec may charge a but more but they ship quick! The other place I initially ordered the front from were out of stock and I'm not goin to wait 2 or more weeks since I already received the rear shocks and coil. I can't wait! There's a couple of members who also have the same setup which inspired me to go this more affordable route.

10022014: Ok took a lil longer than stated above but here are the pics:

I realize it's somewhat hard to notice the lift due to the plastidipped wheels. Like most have stated the nose dive has been eliminated significantly. I also noticed less body roll (pitch) when transitioning onto freeway on/off ramps and in sharp turns. The rake is still present don't seem as dramatic when compared to stock. In any case hope the pics help for those looking to go similar route.

Just received mine today, plan to get them installed as soon as I can find a good shop. going with .85 in the front.

Would it make sense to go .85 and a 3/4" spacer in the rear? I like a little rake, but I don't want anything more than what the 4Runner currently has. I originally intended to do 1.75, but I think that might be a little high. On my 4th gen I had a corn fed 1/1 and FJ springs all around and was very happy with it.

not to stray too far from the OP's topic, but do you need spacers in the rear? I just got the 5100s in the mail today and I keep seeing people with 1.5 or 2" spacers in the back. is that necessary?

Glad for these threads, I have no knowledge or experience with lifts, etc.

I just got some Bilstein 5100 (set) as I wanted to level out, then read more that had me purchase a set of OME medium springs (2885)

What is this set up gonna put me at? I'm not looking to get a ton of lift and read the Bilstein 5100/OME was a good combo. I'm reading as much as possible to learn but still have questions. Am I needing anything else? I don't need a diff drop, I can't imagine as I'm not going to be doing any trail riding at the moment. It's a work truck that will be on the road a lot carrying equipment.

Any help, advice or confirmation would be great.

I guess my main confusion is of I just had the Bilstein 5100 on stock springs I'd bump the front to the 1.75" (2nd to highest notch) to level. But now that I'm factoring in the OME springs, will I then go to a .85" or maybe even 0 lift in the front as I assume the springs will lift, too. Not sure how much. Is there something I'm missing from this set up I should do? UCA necessary?

Nope. Folks use spacers in the back to maintain forward rake if they lift the front end with the 5100s.

If your using 885's the 5100 spring perch should be set at 0" lift. That spring alone is going to be 3" maybe a touch more. My 884's were a touch more that 3" and the 885's are 10mm (I think) longer.

whats the plan for the rear? You'll need something! 885's are going to be a little rough with no extra weight on the front. I wish my 884's were softer.

Honestly, no idea.. I just got the OME 885 for both front/rear and the Bilstein 5100s front and rear. So.... I'm not sure if I'm just going to put the OME 885 on the front w/ bilestein 5100s all around and maybe forego the OME in the rears? I've noticed people putting toytec in the rear with OME in the front. So any advice would be great, I'm like a lost puppy with this crap. I'm used to coilovers and drops.. :noidea:

Thank you so much for your response and help. Am I going to need UCAs?

Something's not right with what your saying.

884 (light duty) and 885 (medium duty) are both front springs, which do you have?

Did you get rear springs and what number? 895e, 895, 889?

Read my build thread on my lift review. Also check all your numbers and revise, then tell me your plans on the build. Bumpers, winch, roof rack, skid plates, cargo drawers? Then I'll point you in the right direction.

Anytime you lift 2.5" or higher you can benefit from UCAs.

Sorry about that, definitely have the 885 (edited my post) so the medium duty. I'm thinking I don't want to do a 3" lift honestly. So I'll probably forgo the OME now knowing that. Good thing I got them at cost, can just resell I'm sure. I get a little mod happy since this stuff is so much cheaper in relation to my supra so I just kinda pulled the trigger too fast.

Honestly, I don't want to go more than 2" I'm more so wanting to level out and replace springs so it's not so "mushy" feeling. I will eventually get the GOBI roof rack, will get TRD skid plate.

No winch, no bumpers, no cargo drawers.

I do have some 17" SCS Stealth six wheels coming in. Will be upgrading tires, probably 265/70 or 265/75 depending on potential rub.

BTW, I lived in edmond for several years. Moved to Kansas City in 2010 for work. I lived off Western and the tollway for a while, also off Grand and May too. Played softball at Oklahoma City University.
