ANTMAN'S Thread

Antman, I love you buddy!

Hey John! I miss you!!
I'm actually camping for the night right now (19 degrees!) nice and cozy in the back of the 'Runner- more on that later.
I used that bottle opener last night and was thinking of ya!

How are you? Pm me your number and I'll call later today. I lost all my phone contacts a few months back.

Antman - I wanted to check in and see how that powered subwoofer has held up? I actually had installed the same sub under the drivers seat in my 2004 Tacoma about a year ago and loved it, but sold the truck last week and bought a 2016 SR5 Premium - I actually am pretty happy with the sound but I do miss the that little woofer.

I never had any issues with the sub (aside from freezing up overnight in the winter and taking some time to thaw out during my morning commute lol) and it was great in the small cab of the Tacoma - I presume it sounds pretty good despite the larger airspace in the 4runner, and has it lasted all this time?

I have been reading all over this site the past few months and you seem to have provided a TON of info/mods/write-ups - a big thank you! :thumb3:

I replaced it with a 1000W inverter a few years ago- much better use of the space!

I did like it when I had it though- Kraeken has the same one in his though and last I heard he was loving it. Maybe he will chime in...

The Wifey gave me the green light (with a raised eyebrow) for a one night, solo camping getaway. Why the eyebrow? Well, it was 18 degrees overnight, lol.

Only campground I could find (close) that was open was a tiny place called Maple Tree Campground. The owner was like- "Uh, yeah we have ALL our spots open, but you have to be pretty extreme to want to get up there Thursday night- and you will definitely need 4WD..." Perfect.

I wanted to test the ARB awning room, my sleeping platform and some other gear to see how things performed in coooold temps. Everything worked out great. The Little Buddy propane heater in the ARB room turned 18 degrees into 50 degrees and I was cozy in the truck all night. And, I finally have a camp-coffee setup that I love!

Here are some awesome pics and a smooth video that shows my mad drone skills-try not to puke (the drone cost me $45 so itiswhatitis). Enjoy the music - and crashes, lmao...

It's...different. I don't like it unless it's mixed with water and very cold, and then it's pretty damn good!

Man I am so jealous of your camp out. I have been itching to get out since my awning and room arrived, just haven't been able to sneak away with kid stuff. Funny thing is that I even have the same mr buddy heater and was wondering how it would do in the arb room!

I am surprised you don't drink Kirkland scotch, I hear it's made by a good name brand. On the coffee front I am looking for a good camp setup, I want to be able to take whole beans with so looking at a couple options, probably use my aero press with a hand grinder!

Side note: fridge arrived already, will start measuring and check in on construction advice soon. :thumb:

Hey Antman,

Is there a 4th wall against the 4runner or is that open?
How tightly does it seal against the 4runner?
Were you able to leave the door or window open to get the heat into the 4runner?
Looks like an interesting alternative to a roof top tent.

I was really excited to get away, even for one night! I want to try that Kirkland scotch- just gotta get up to Delaware to buy it- no alcohol allowed in MD Costco's- this is a great state...
Looking forward to helping you with the platform build! Phone is probably easiest! Miss you man!

Hey Brian,

I gotta tell you, that room is awesome! I got it from Autoanything during a 30% off sale, free shipping for something like $110 bucks. Here's everything you may ever want to know about it...

Yes, it has 4 sides, plus it's own ceiling and a thick floor. The back slides into a channel on the awning, the front zips to a flap on the awning, and all the sides clip into place to hold the box-shape. They provide plenty of tent stakes too.

The side against the truck sits completely flush and there is a zippered door that lines up perfectly with the passenger door on the truck. I roll this up and tuck it into the space between my Gobi and roof and it fills that gap. Only downside to that, is it leaves a gap under the truck where the door opening is. I put the stuff-sack with a tarp in it under the truck to fill that space. I find it easiest to do it this way instead of unzipping that door every time I want in the truck. I was a little leery about leaving the window/door of the truck open with that heater running- it is propane and I leave the tent windows partially unzipped for ventilation. I have no doubt that if I left it on high with everything zipped up it would cook in there...

You can stand up fully inside with room to spare. Every side has zippered, screened windows that have grommets so you can stake them out like awnings if it's raining. The front door can be opened from either side and has a full length screen as well. There are 2 vent screens on the back at the top to allow ventilation if all the windows are closed. There are also 2 zippered openings to run power cords through.

Typical ARB quality- overbuilt. Takes about 20 minutes by yourself to setup or take down (maybe half that if you are in a super hurry...)

I love it! Any other questions?

I had been moving towards buying an RTT myself, but with a family of four I expected to have to spend more and it would probably still be tight. In the end I was getting the awning anyway and decided for a fraction of the cost the "room" would be a much better option since I already have multiple tents. Now if I go with just my son we can just use that or if the whole family goes we can put up a tent and my wife and I can still relax elsewhere in the room. Antman gave an excellent write up above.

Now I just have to get out and use mine! oh and my wife will feel good about me using this setup as I normally backpack in on the snow to camp in the winter, glamping is awesome.

Yeah, why you no share the 30% off info with us????? :pout:

Thanks for the info. I appreciate it.

They actually have the awnings and rooms on sale today for 20% off. Contemplating it right now.

Better jump on that! When the really good deals come by I just tell my wife it was a deal that was cheaper than I've ever seen and was about to expire so I HAD to jump on it. As they say, easier to ask foregiveness than permission. :decision:

Thanks for the heads up. I just ordered up an awning, great price & free shipping. Now I need to figure out how to mount it to Yakima load warrior basket...
