Any reviews of the new Bilstein 6112's?

Anyone have the extended and collapsed measurements for the 6112's? I see the Tacoma version has the following, but I have not been able to find the 4Runner numbers...
6112
collapsed = 17.67
extended = 22.5
travel = 4.83

My uneducated guess is this: 6112 shocks *maybe* the same for all platforms with the exception of the top mounting solutions. So, perhaps that includes all lengths and valving are the same. Anyway, just a WAG on my part.

you might wanna talk to a dealer

Is this true? The 6112 springs are only 3% stiffer than stock? Supposedly the FJ springs are 5% stiffer, so if I "upgrade" from my 5100/FJ lift, I'm actually getting a SOFTER spring rate???

I've had my lift for 60 or 70,000 miles, and I don't know how many miles the springs had beforehand, and I'm definitely seeing some sagging with my skids, sliders, sleeping platform, etc. I'm looking for something to give me back my lift and maybe even add a bumper and winch too some time in the future (and, of course, I'm trying not to spend a ton of money at the moment).

But i believe that there are coils with higher spring rates available for additional cost..

Yeah, I could probably just switch out the springs but I'd need to find somebody that sells different options.
Honestly, who knows if I'll ever get a full bumper, so maybe I'd just go with the existing 6112 setup and upgrade the springs later.

total performance automotive that mentioned it so you might give um a call.

Shock/spring options

I recently purchased a 2005 Sport Edition 4x4 V8 currently at 177k and after looking at the service records it's still running stock shocks/springs.

There aren't any strange noises coming from the suspension, so I don't think the shocks are blown, but the ride is a little bouncy and from what I gather after 12 years of driving and 177k miles I'm probably past due for a shock replacement.

Research has led me to look at the Bilstein 5100 shocks (often paired with FJ springs), and I've come across the 6112 package as well.

The 4Runner is my daily driver, and I don't do any heavy offroading. I'm not looking to lift the vehicle dramatically, but I would like to bring the front end up a bit to straighten out the rake. Measuring from the center of the wheel to the bottom of the fender flare I'm seeing 22" in the rear and 19" up front - a 3" rake. Does this indicate that the springs ought to be swapped out along with the shocks?

I know there's a lot out there covering this general topic (and I've read plenty of the posts), but I'd be interested to hear what folks have to say regarding my particular situation. Thanks in advance!

I'm in the same position actually. No real problems but bouncy. However, I'd like to keep the xreas if it's possible (just new oem) but it'd be one or the other. How's the ride on the newer shocks if we were to scrap xreas and go aftermarket? That's my query.

I had a similar issue, I went and bought the MOOG FJ Springs for around $50 on Amazon (with prime) and it basically levelled my 4runner. And I got to keep my XREAS suspension.

Wait you got to keep your xreas??? Did you lose any hydraulic fluid from the pig tails or system, our flush it in any way? I just called the dealership and got a quote for over 2000 dollars for all replacements and flushing the xreas system. On my 5000 dollar 4runner. [emoji19] Yeah, I'm willing to consider alternatives.

If the XREAS system is intact and the shocks aren't leaking there is no need to flush and replace. There is enough slack if you disconnect the XREAS line support bracket in the wheel well to get access to work on it.

Like this:

Whatever you do, do not disconnect the hydraulic line at the shock/strut.

You can disconnect it further down the line at the junction block as there are check valves in place, but all 4 wheels must be lifted.

The Bilstein 6112/5160 is a great off-road build option and has been well received in the FJ community.

One of the things some of our Team Members noticed immediately, was no nose dive when coming to
a stop, while still gliding over bumps and rocks smoothly.

If you are looking to take your FJ off-road, 6112's over 5100's is the choice.

I'd like some opinion on my installation. I'm on the lowest snap ring groove as I wanted a minimal amount of lift, which I got it at around 1.5" or so. My first impression of the 6112s are that they soak up the bumps really nice but they provide a "floaty" front end, not sure how else to describe this sensation. Almost feels like I can use more rebound maybe, not sure exactly. My ex-GF's '08 V8 4Runner equipped with the oem XREAS felt much firmer than mine. Of course the 6112s are way better than the worn out front suspension but I had hoped for a more firm feeling instead of this floaty feeling. I have no bumper/winch up front, totally stock.

Has anyone have similar sensation coming from the front end? The vehicle still corners nicely without question.

I'll contact Bilstein to see if I should add more N2 to firm things up.

Thanks for any feedback.

More details on your setup?

Signature pretty much describes it. I am also running wabfab end links up front and rear endlinks from member pearlj10. The extended end links make a hell of a difference imo.

**Also cannot emphasize enough that you will need to go with some aftermarket UCA's, additionally, I did install a diff drop.

I have Camburg bj UCAs in the box.

My 6112s arrive today. I was hoping to install them in the next couple days. If I need to wait for brackets... maybe I'll just quickly fab some, they seem fairly simple.

vs 5100

I did not realise the 6112s don't have protective boots... but I see there's very little space between the shock body and the coil so I guess that's why.

Sadly to assemble them I need to use spring compressors. Mine may be too large to fit on the coil so I might have to use the no-spring-compressor method.

Also sadly I found some nicks on the coils down to bare metal... I'll need to spray them with something or they'll rust quickly.

That sucks, I was able to get mine from another member fully and in great shape.
