Any Tundra owners?

Hey folks!

Just wondering if anybody on here, has a Tundra that they daily drive? I'm thinking of retiring the 4Runner to "Summer Toy" duty. Love my old girl, but not really a good vehicle to drive into Oba with, and I can't bring myself to sell her outright. (my plan is to do a restoration on her... clean off all the grease I have in the undercarriage and Pore 15 the crap out of her.)

That being said... I've been eyeing a Tundra... looking for something heavier that will handle the logging roads better in the winter, 4wd, and that can tow heavier than my Tacoma.

I know I've seen at least one member on here with a Tundra... just can't remember who it was. Wondering how you guys like your Tundra... anything you'd change?

Wife wants a JK Wrangler... I'm trying to talk her out of it... and get a Tundra!! Give me some ammo to fight the good fight!

First or second gen Tundra? I would go with the first generation. If you need more than that then I would be looking at an F250 for the solid front axle. I know that Rickashay has a Tundra that is sitting on 35's.

Looking at a 2nd Gen Tundra.... wanting something bigger. The 1st Gen Tundra isn't much bigger than my 4dr Tacoma.

I had a 2nd Gen Tundra...LOVED IT! But had to sell it so I can get a 1968 Olds 442 (pictured). Here are a few pics of my rig...reasons to buy one. I will definitely be getting another 2nd Gen Tundra in the future. So many things you can do with it. The trailer I was pulling was roughly 9000lbs (dry) and pulled easily up hills. I had the 5.7...loved it and would definitely recommend it to anyone.

I have a first Gen Tundra Rob and it is smaller in some ways than your Tacoma. Get a second generation for sure. I'd myself would opt for the 4.6 instead of the 5.7 for it gets better gas mileage. My uncle, cousin, and friends all have second generation Tundras with the only common complaint of the rear having too much flex at times. Otherwise everyone seems happy.

Trading/selling the Tacoma?

I hate to see Mean Green retired but knew that day would come.

As good as Julie is to you I'd just ask her what color she wants. But tell her she will have to do all the repairs on it, which will be frequent, if you get the Wrangler.

Tundra... Jk has less tow capacity than our t4r's.

I have a 2008 double cab 5.7 4x4 and I love it. I average 14.5 mpg around town and 18.5 on the interstate. Bought it new in 08 during the extremely high gas price era. I got a lot of rebates back from toyota. I ended up driving away with it for $31k and that's with taxes and extended warranty. I don't think you can touch one new for that price anymore. Just turned over 56k miles. I run 275/70r18 BFG KO's (33-11.00x18) without any lift and there isn't any rubbing. Tires have about another year left on them and then I p,an on going with the KO2's.

Oh ya, I had a 2008 Double Cab and there was LOTS of leg room back there. If you don't need to recline the seats in the back, you can save some $$$ and go with the DC, not get the Crew Cab. I had 87K miles on mine before selling and got bout 15 mpg average. Only problem I had was a few months before selling, 7 years after buying brand new, I had to replace the alternator.

As for the Tacoma.... it's staying. I'm gonna have 3 Yota's in the driveway. Only use the 4Runner for fun rides.... (dates with the wife, trips to the beach, etc...)

The Taco is gonna stay the wife's daily driver... and I'll be driving the Tundra. That being said... I wouldn't mind a JK... just not sure about their reliability.

In a perfect world... I'd have all 3 trucks.... and an FJ40.... I love the look of those rigs.... and would be ecstatic to have one.

I have a 2013 that I don't even drive because it's actually too big. :redbrick: I traded my 2006 Tacoma in for it and I regretted it ever since!
I have a 2013 Harley FatBob as my commuter to work, and now that I picked up a 2000 4runner for 1k. I rarely drive the Tundra. It just sits in the driveway.
I was thinking about trading it in for a new 4runner but the new design looks like Ass in MHO.

The new Tundras are huge, and that's why I personally wouldn't want one. I wouldn't want a truck much bigger than the 2nd gen Tacomas. That said though, I'm sure the Tundras are nice vehicles and should have Toyota reliability.

I'm surprised you see that good of gas mileage in you Tundra [MENTION=118048]Link12[/MENTION]. Most of us don't see much better than that in our little 3rd gens haha

I never really wanted a big truck before.... but with the road conditions I drive on to get to and from work.... I need something heavier, to handle the road. I've driven F-250's and F-150's, as well as 2500 Dodges down this road, and they seem to handle the washboards and other road conditions like champs. My 4Runner, unfortunately doesn't handle the road well. I think it's the wheel base and weight. My Tacoma does fairly well, but still doesn't hold the road as well as a half ton or 3/4 ton truck does.

That being said, I have 2 kids, and find the Double cab Taco's back seat to be a little more cramped than my 4Runner is. So, a Tundra would be the next logical purchase. Unless I get a Wrangler.... but don't really want to make a move to the "dark side"... lol!

My brother-in-law is on his second 2nd generation (went from a 5.7L 2008 to 4.6 2012). He does land surveying here in Virginia so he puts on about 35,000 miles a year. His 2008 went through two water pumps by 104,000 miles as well as two serpentine belts, an alternator, and two TPMS sensors. So far his 2012 with 78,000 miles has been fine other than pads, plugs, and one serpentine belt.

Being a big guy (6'5) he fits well in it, plus all the controls can be used easily with gloves on (useful in Canada I would suppose). I myself being 5'6 know that I can stretch out in the rear with ease. From what I can see it is almost as easy to work on as the 4runner and Taco.

When you say that your Tacoma doesn't hold the road well? that could be an alignment issue?

As for more room for the kids? The Tundra certainly has that!
The ride is Outstanding also!
The reason I don't like using it is that most of the parking areas that we go are very small, basically made for compact cars.
But if we're headed to the country, or the beach the Tundra is the way to go in comfort!

My Tacoma with the 35" tires and the V6 was getting about 15 mpg. My Tundra with the big V8 stock gets about 17 mpg.

The biggest selling point of the Tundra over to Tacoma was the back roll down window!:bounce:
If the Tacoma did that? I would have gotten another Tacoma.

I don't think it's an alignment issue... it's been aligned recently. Maybe some context would help...

The road I travel into work is a logging road. For about 60kms, it's snow packed (often not properly plowed), and is traveled by transport trucks at speeds that exceed 80km/hr. I manage to travel at the posted speed limit of 80km/hr when the road is plowed, but if the road has anywhere from 6" to a full foot of snow on it... my truck is all over the place. I end up travelling at much slower speeds... usually 60km/hr or less.

The next section of the road... the remaining 50kms is very poorly maintained. It's washboard, mixed with potholes, mixed with snow.. which is often not plowed. I drive into work with 2 ft of snow on the ground, and have to travel that entire 50kms at around 30km/hr.

This makes the drive into work, rather slow.... and sometime treacherous. (Hence why things like this happen)





A full size truck handles the road better. I've seen it time and time again.... they just seem to have more weight, and hold the road better. I realize that speeding down an icy road can be hazardous... which is why defensive driving is a must up here. I pack a shovel, small tools, blankets, knives, and my next purchase will most likely be a FM radio transmitter, so I can call for help if I do ditch the truck.

The Jeep isn't going to handle that road either. The wheelbase is shorter than the 4Runner. Get the Tundra!!!!!:boink:

hahahaha. I say second gen. Either motor will have the power you desire to tow, just the 5.7 will tow and get you up to speed on the freeway rather quick. Be sure to post more pics when you add another TOYOTA to the stable. :rockon:

Get a second gen, I have a '12 Rock Warrior Crew max that is great. The only things I have done to it is level it, and cold air intake and exhaust. Well minus the light changes, etc. My T4R is my DD because it gets much better than the 14 MPG that I am lucky to get in the Tundra. Its great though, pulled a 1 ton Ford out of the ditch with it, rides great and just a blast.
